http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/11/08/us-unesco-idUSBRE9A70I320131108
UNESCO has suspended the voting rights of the United States and Israel, two years after both countries stopped paying dues to the U.N.'s cultural arm in protest over its granting full membership to the Palestinians. The U.S. decision to cancel its funding in October 2011 was blamed on U.S. laws that prohibit funding to any U.N. agency that implies recognition of the Palestinians' demands for their own state. Israel also pulled its funding, objecting to what it called unilateral attempts by the Palestinians to gain recognition of statehood. Both countries missed a 1100 GMT Friday deadline to provide an official justification for non-payment and a plan to pay back missed dues, a UNESCO source told Reuters. That automatically triggered suspension of their voting rights. ... The withdrawal of U.S. funding - which totalled about $240 million (£149,737,958.57), or some 22 percent of UNESCO's budget - has plunged it into a funding crisis and forced it to cut programs.
Israel is coming off with the message that asking for statehood is a crime. Typical.
From what I understand this could have major implications for other UN agencies the US is a member of, and could impact a large number of UN projects currently doing positive stuff in the US, because their US funding could suffer the same fate.
Well it says they stopped paying it 2 years ago so what did they expect.
How much does voting in UNESCO really matter can they no longer decide what counts as a cultural heritage sight oh no BUT seriously it is ASININE that there is a law prohibiting funding to anyone who says Palestine should be a state
U.S. laws that prohibit funding to any U.N. agency that implies recognition of the Palestinians' demands for their own state.
Congress are slaves for AIPAC.
Jesus we're so childish. Fuck Israel and fuck our Politics.
It's bad that we're doing this to spite Palestine, but it's pretty funny how we singlehandedly ruined them.
YES! YES! YES! YES! About fucking time!
US funding represented 1/5 of UNESCO's budget so it's biting them in the ass pretty hard
Bullying shouldn't be placed down to a dollar value.. They still have 80% of their funding, minus the blatant discrimination against Palestine for the sake of Israel.
Jesus we're so childish. Fuck Israel and fuck our Politics.
Fucking Israel is exactly what the US is doing
Fucking Israel is exactly what the US is doing
Vice versa; but, the US is happy to supply a reach-around.

Funny how that works
I'm sure there are ways for the President to deal with these laws but the political cost from Israel loving Americans would be too much
The reason this is even an issue is because of Mossad. There are more Mossad agents imbeded throughout the world in positions of power than you'd think. They have dirt on any and everyone that would oppose them and are willing to kill them if needed to protect Israel. It's really fucking scary to think about. Israel has the US by the balls and there's nothing anyone can really do now.
Oh and Mossad aside, the Christian population of the US would flip shit if we did anything anti-Israel.
It really isn't the Christian population, but more of the Republican population.
It really isn't the Christian population, but more of the Republican population.
nah the mainstream of both parties loves to be on Israel's jock
Israel is coming off with the message that asking for statehood is a crime. Typical.
Well, they're essentially perpetrating a slow genocide against Palestinians, and ethnically cleansing Jerusalem of them. It'd be a real shame if the rights of their victims were somehow acknowledged.
I'm okay with this, Americans are uncultured slobs anyway.
I'm okay with this, Americans are uncultured slobs anyway.
Way to generalize, asshole.
I'm okay with this, Americans are uncultured slobs anyway.
And Danes have an unfortunate reputation for being ethnocentric white supremacists. Your point?
And Danes have an unfortunate reputation for being ethnocentric white supremacists. Your point?
thanks for sticking up for us canada we love you
And Danes have an unfortunate reputation for being ethnocentric white supremacists. Your point?
Well, my point obviously is Dane pride world wide 420 fuck the imperialist 'murrekans! Or maybe testing how far Poe's Law goes before people here doesn't pick up on the satire.
thanks for sticking up for us canada we love you
I'm not even going to tell you what your country flag shows, but I'm going to guess you're from the USA. Eh, I'm not a fan of the US government or Israel, and I'm glad they lost the UNESCO vote. But seriously, don't generalize. I've seen you around, Riller, you're not a shit poster. What the hell was that about?
yea garry needs to fix my flag if it's gonna be wrong it should at least be Venezuela not fucking Brunei
yea garry needs to fix my flag if it's gonna be wrong it should at least be Venezuela not fucking Brunei
and exactly what does this have to do with anything in this thread???

My actual opinion is that the US and Israel are being childish cunts over something that shouldn't be a fucking issue in the first place in pulling their funding, and that honestly, it's dumb that they've been a part of UNESCO voting for the last two years. They're politicising the fuckin' preservation of various super-important historical and natural sites, and the pulled funding is a serious blow to the upkeep costs of such sites, many of which are considered endangered and in need of preservation. Fine, you don't like Palestine, what the fuck ever, but pulling funding from this is just pants-on-heads.

They don't give a fuck if the world burns and millions die, even, so long as everyone's willing to play their game. So I'm applauding the decision of UNESCO to withdraw their voting powers. Now the UN proper should follow suit. [editline]9th November 2013[/editline] To be clear here, when I say 'They' I'm referring to the powers calling the shots.
huh and here I thought Obama was pro palistine , or at least dropped the matter once they got a nonvoting u.n. seat.... still why we stopped paying UNESCO... wait they support human rights and are trying to encourage education? kinda hard to do that when we are massicreing people with drones on a near daily basis [editline]9th November 2013[/editline] fucking drone war is something we are going to be dealing with the fallout for decades to come
I'm okay with this, Americans are uncultured slobs anyway.
The US govt is in the wrong here not US citizens
