• China to oust US as the world's number one manufacturing nation, a title held for 110 yrs
It's an ominous sign of the end of an era: For 110 years, the United States has been the world's leading manufacturer... a title we will likely lose to China next year. A report by an economic research firm shows that China's manufacturing sector nearly caught up to the U.S. output last year... and will probably surpass us in 2011. According to IHS Global Insight, China may be able to quickly close the gap - particularly due to the recent announcement that it will let its currency, the yuan, rise in value versus the U.S. dollar. But even without a stronger currency, China's manufacturing sector has been growing at a much faster rate than the U.S. No surprise since we've been shutting down factories left and right for years... and shipping jobs overseas, where the labor is cheaper. One expert suggests the U.S. shouldn't worry too much about losing this title to China. He says it's obvious that China would pull ahead at some point since they have four times the population and a tenth of the wages of the United States. Really? Then why didn't they challenge us for 110 years? Nonetheless - with almost 10 percent unemployment in the U.S. there's no question we could use those lost jobs back here. The U.S. has been the world's top manufacturer for more than a century - in the late 1890s, the United States surpassed Britain, which had held the top slot for a few decades. And before that? It was all China, which held the title of world leader for goods production for more than 1,500 years. Looks like they will soon reclaim the title.
Source: http://caffertyfile.blogs.cnn.com/2010/06/21/what-if-china-overtakes-u-s-as-worlds-leading-manufacturer/?iref=allsearch :911: :china:
Not surprising considering China has 4x the population of the US.

How have they not already surpassed us? What is even made here anymore?
There goes the neighborhood.
Well, yeah, this should come as no surprise. They have well over a billion people who will happily work themselves to death in factories for pennies a day.
Too bad China's a shitty overcrowded place to live.
better dead than red
I can't say I'm surprised

I honestly did not know America was still the top manufacturing country. I thought China passed us a really long time ago.
Time to learn Mandarin
we work for the better of our nation!
I feel bad for them and I want to put them all in good homes with good educations and then make a race of robots to make things like that and each one will cost about 12377213791239781237923 chinese yingers. They will pay for it using reverse negative debt synthesis from our debt to them. Then they will meet the country guidelines for a better American planet and they will fit in with all nations in the American Empire.
With that many people, there must be a rebellion some day. The question is when.
A scarier statistic is the fact that financial products passed manufacturing as our largest revenue source a long time ago. We make way more money by shifting piles of currency around and charging interest than we do by producing anything tangible.
I thought they already were out-manufacturing our nation already.
