Avid texters beware: Fort Lee, N.J. police said they will begin issuing $85 jaywalking tickets to pedestrians who are caught texting while walking.
"It's a big distraction. Pedestrians aren't watching where they are going and they are not aware," said Thomas Ripoli, chief of the Fort Lee Police Department.
Ripoli said the borough, which is home to approximately 35,000 residents, has suffered three fatal pedestrian-involved accidents this year. He hopes his crackdown on people who display dangerous behavior while walking will make his town safer, but not everyone is on board with the idea of issuing $85 tickets.
"When I walk I still look around. I'm not like constantly looking down the whole time," said resident Sue Choe.
Another woman complained about the tickets were "a lot of money."
Officers handed out pamphlets during a short grace period in March before they began aggressively going after "dangerous walkers."
More than 117 tickets have been issued, according to the New Jersey Record.
Two professors at Stony Brook University in New York conducted a study on walking and texting. They found texters are 60 percent more likely to veer off line than non-texters.
"We want to raise awareness that a real disruption occurs because of texting," Eric Lamberg, co-author of the study, told Long Island Business News. "Texting disrupts your ability much more than does talking.
It is kinda interesting, I'm on the fence with this. I mean if someone is going to text they technically have to stand still in order to be within that law. At the same time such law wouldn't have to be made if there wasn't an issue. Its kinda sad that we're so glued to our phones that we're not paying attention to what is around us.
I text and walk sometimes, it's pretty easy to pay attention but at the same time, it can be dangerous.
texting and bike riding however...
I honestly can't see this being enforced, like littering.
Three deaths is hardly an issue large enough to warrant a law.
How will this work?
A person could say they're dialing a number.
Should be illegal to text while in the crosswalk, not just walking -- to vague
Must be North Jersey, I'm not familiar with the town.
Silly North Jersey, you so dumb.
What about the people who can text without looking?
what the hell
only idiots text without looking up
What about the people who can text without looking?
That's like saying it is cool to drive while drunk as long as you are good with it.

Oh... :(

Yeah it's right across the river from NY. It's a nice place for asian food.
And North Jersey is pretty knee-jerky, I agree.

How many people do you kill while walking?
Sort of stupid. I was surprised to see how people were banning texting while driving (just now or whatever) and went back to take a look at this thread. Then I saw it was texting while walking...
Why not ban any sort of distraction? Its the same thing. Actually, I can get more distracted with for example a girl passing by than while I'm texting and walking.
wow three deaths stop the presses we need action immediately!!
But not every place you can walk is near a road...
Oh, wait, New Jersey. Never mind.
Sort of what they get for not looking where they are going now isn't it.
Really, any form of texting while actively in motion should be banned. Texting while sitting in a car shouldn't be, but I think texting while driving is (hopefully) already banned. There are too many dumbshits down here in Melbourne that get themselves run over because they were too busy posting funny pictures of cats on Facebook to notice the road train coming up to their right.

Three deaths so far, it's in the interest to try and prevent it from happening again.
That being said, I still think it's the wrong way to tackle the issue.
Sort of what they get for not looking where they are going now isn't it.
Yeah, i agree with this. But the law isn't... filling the correct role, I guess. Addresses the problem with the wrong solution.

I don't want my car damaged by stupid people.
usually i should be the last person to ever say the words "nanny state".
but this reeks of that

Human life has an infinite inherent value

My teacher told me its also jokingly referred to as "Fort Ree", given the large asian population.
i don't know how dumb people can be if they can't even see in their peripheral vision
and if they have eye problems then they shouldn't even be texting while doing anything
"How can we make more laws to infringe on people's rights!?" Texting and operating something is one thing (vehicle, etc.) walking? really?
Leave it up to the twat state of New Jersey to (continue to) be morons.

Welcome to New Jersey! :downs:
Or you could...you know...pay attention to where you're walking?

In the military, we can't talk or text on the cellphone while walking.
