Picture: Herald Sun Source: Herald Sun [release] • Australian war hero attacked on street with box-cutter • Violent teen will be sent back home under supervision • "This person has no respect for humankind" A VIOLENT teenager who almost killed an Australian war hero on a Melbourne street will serve no jail time. The thug, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will instead be sent back to his home state to serve a supervision order. Eighteen months ago, he launched an unprovoked attack on Scott May, who drove armoured personnel carriers in treacherous war zones in Afghanistan. Mr May was awarded a Silver Commendation Medal for trying to save a wounded US Army nurse during a mortar attack while serving in Iraq. But he came closest to death walking along Elizabeth St when the thug slashed open his face with a box-cutter in an unprovoked attack. Police spent 18 months trying to have the teenager put before a Victorian court. He spent a week in custody in Victoria after police were finally able to extradite him earlier this month. He faced a Children's Court on Tuesday and, after pleading guilty, was placed on a 12-month youth supervision order to be served in his home state. A conviction was recorded. The Herald Sun cannot use his name because he was under 18 at the time of the attack, which happened on June 5 last year. RSL state president David McLachlan said he was amazed at the sentence. "An Afghanistan veteran should be able to return to Australia after being in harm's way and expect to be able to walk down the street in safety," Mr McLachlan said. "This person has no respect for humankind. He's got no respect for the law of the land." Mr May, who is now a Victoria Police officer, was walking with his wife and friends after a night out when he was attacked. The teenage mugger reached around Mr May and, starting just under his eye, dragged the blade across his face. In the immediate aftermath of the shocking assault, Mr May was sceptical justice would be done because, he said, courts were too lenient. "He'll probably just get a six-month good behaviour bond, a slap on the wrist - naughty, naughty," Mr May said at the time.[/release]
I wonder how old he is. Here in the US you are tried as an adult at 16 or 17 or 18 (depends on the state). Because wouldn't this be under attempted murder and assault. It is sad how he got out of a hostile combat area, only to be almost killed in his town.
I feel like the most surprising thing in the article is the fact that Australia has a military EDIT: for the majority of people in the world that cannot read sarcasm through text, this was a joke.
"This person has no respect for humankind. He's got no respect for the law of the land." He might just not have respect for the person he slashed, Not every single human.
I went into this thread thinking "Australia." My intuition never fails me.
I don't care if the guy is a war hero, he could be the janitor of some office and that would still be a terrible, terrible injustice.
"He'll probably just get a six-month good behaviour bond, a slap on the wrist - naughty, naughty,"
sums up the UK courts
It's pretty poor journalism to keep drilling home the guy served in the military. It doesn't really matter what the guy did, it's the crime that matters. Like this for example: "An Afghanistan veteran should be able to return to Australia after being in harm's way and expect to be able to walk down the street in safety," Mr McLachlan said. I'm under the opinion ALL people should expect to be able to walk down the street in safety.

After that supervision ends it will mostly likely just happen again... or even during the supervision.
I don't get the why they let anyone under the age of eighteen get off scott-free. Unless they're eight year olds, they damn well know what they're doing.
I'll agree the crime is terrible, but it's just a slap in the face to have these brave soldiers willing to lay their lives on the line for people who end up trying to kill them.
From a legal standpoint the fact that the victim was a war hero is not relevant when assessing the crime and its penalty.
sums up the UK courts
Haha, no, more like Finland's courts. You get merely couple of months of prison for raping someone, even underaged, than from murder. Actually it's so bad that it's commonly joked that after robbing a bank it's safer to rape someone so that you get lesser sentence than without.
I'll agree the crime is terrible, but it's just a slap in the face to have these brave soldiers willing to lay their lives on the line for people who end up trying to kill them.
The soldier didn't put his life on the line to protect the kid who slashed his face. [editline]14th December 2011[/editline] Australia isn't even under a threat of anyone in Afghanistan.
Because that's why soldiers from Australia have been flown home in coffins from Afghanistan all year.
Yeah, and they're pretty much dying for no reason.
That teen is doing it wrong, you threaten to hurt them if you're robbing them. If you hurt them first then they go into 'fight or flight' mode and you're going to have a harder time getting any money from them. edit: or so I've been told
Teens are way too young to know what they're doing. Give the kid a break. I'm sure he didn't mean to hurt the guy. However, 6-year-olds playing doctor definitely should be charged with sexual assault and be listed as sex offenders because they clearly know what they're doing.
Another point, why are they treating this like the kid shot him 40 times. They keep saying attempting to murder him and kill him. What the kid did was fucked up, but slashing the side of your face isn't trying to kill you. Stabbing you in the fucking back IS. This article is so poorly written.
Uh what? He should have like a few years for doing that.

Here in Canada your criminal record gets deleted when you get 18, awesome isn't it?
Here in Canada your criminal record gets deleted when you get 18, awesome isn't it?
That may be the only reason I've heard to NOT move to Canada.
I'm so glad this article wrote VIOLENT in all caps and then called the kid a thug, it's refreshing to see such an objective approach to journalism. They should include some pictures of cute kittens being set on fire by a teenager as well.

Send that kid to Afghanistan.
Notice a pattern there?
no ur wrong its sensationalnaism
no ur wrong its sensationalnaism
Yeah, that's the ONLY example of sensationalism. Get over yourself. [editline]15th December 2011[/editline]
Send that kid to Afghanistan.
Uh, why?
I know there are veins and stuff in face, but how life threatening could have this actually been? I mean, to bleed out, he would have to stay untreated for quite a while no? And another thing - I really can't undestand how this went. Did he try to mug him, he fought back, and the dude sliced his face? Or did he do it pre-emptively to gain upper hand and to mug him afterward? I just can't see how this went.
