The student, who has not been named, and the American Civil Liberties Union, which brought a complaint on her behalf, applauded the findings, while the school district called them "serious overreach." After an investigation stemming from a 2013 complaint by the ACLU, and months of negotiations, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights found Township High School District 211 was violating federal non-discrimination rules. The district says transgender students may use their gender-identified locker room if they change and shower privately. The government said a separate changing place was discriminatory because it subjected the student to stigma and different treatment. The case is seen as clarifying federal rules on locker-room access at a time of expanding awareness of transgender issues. In mid-October the school district, with five high schools and two alternative high schools west of Chicago, defied the government, continuing to deny full locker-room access for the transgendered student. Assistant U.S. Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine Lhamon said the high school was disobeying the law. "All students deserve the opportunity to participate equally in school programs and activities – this is a basic civil right," she said in a statement.
Fuck yeah the feds are stepping in on this, bout time. Sick of hearing this shit constantly coming out of schools
While a good thing, I've always been worried abut the bullying that might/will arise from these situations, being high school
That's the school district I just graduated from. I would have never guessed one of the schools in my area would be in the center of controversy like this, always seemed like a safe environment for students around me. I could see their attempt at trying to ease tensions by making the student shower and change in a separate bathroom over concerns of student and parent opinion of a pre-op student being in a locker. Looking at facebook there does seem to be a split between some students over the issue, although a majority of the students at the school district are in favor for the girl
While a good thing, I've always been worried abut the bullying that might/will arise from these situations, being high school
Well people shouldn't really be bullying anyone, but even if they think it's better not to, it says may use, so I guess it's sort of up to the person in question.
While a good thing, I've always been worried abut the bullying that might/will arise from these situations, being high school
Yeah, but if we want to stop kids from bullying trans kids, then we should stop teaching them that being trans is a bad thing by doing stuff like the school in the OP, and just treat them properly. Kids mostly pick up their ideas of right and wrong from adults. We should lead by example.
This type of shit can be kind of wrong if said person was like that one from that other school a few months ago, who was just a guy who saw themselves as a girl but never transitioned and wanted access to the girls locker room(school had gender neutral bathrooms already). Its understandable in a case like that why both students and the school could feel uncomfortable and not allow that. Kids did some walkout and shit. Yet shit like this
The student in the case has identified as female for years; the school lists her as a female student and she plays on the girls' sports teams and uses girls' restrooms.
At that point its seriously pretty fucked they made her change in private areas and its really good feds actually stepped in. If shes been a she for years already, respected as such by the school, on the school girls teams, and restrooms, then why was she being treated as a weird freak needing to change in special places? This is obviously someone whos very serious about it.
I used to be apprehensive about this but now I think it's a good thing. I mean, if a girl is uncomfortable with her in there, she can simple... walk away... or go change in a stall or something. I think this has a chance for abuse, but I think because of the controversy administrators will be watching it carefully. I hope the girl can at least feel comfortable now, though I doubt she will with the bullying that will likely result
Why the hell does everyone think girls should have to remove their clothing in front of someone who (in their head) switched genders, possibly with taking certain medicines to seem more feminine and literally could have done it for any number of reasons in their head which are unconfirmed? I'm sorry but this is weird as hell, a lot of locker rooms don't even have stalls unless their is a toilet part of it. I know most people probably disagree with me, I don't know why though, I don't know why something like this that is weird as fuck gets allowed in a highschool full of kids. This weird shit is not some 'learning to accept' bullshit, it's girls getting forced to be in an extremely uncomfortable situation, what a fucking disgrace. I understand she identifies as a female for years, some of them probably have no problem with her, yet the more I read stories like this I see someone being able to change in the girls locker room just for saying "I'm a girl now", or a 'trans gendered' 'woman' who looks nothing like one, has no tits, has a saggy old ballsack who is actually just a 50 year old dude using the female locker rooms completely naked. No, I'm sorry this is a complete fucking delusion, I have no problem with these people but you do not get to be fucking creepy, saying "oh you must be sexist" or "How ignorant you are..." because they wanna use the opposite gender's dressing room. Their needs to be a whole separate one for it, not fucking forcing women to deal with seeing a disgusting old naked dude. For this scenario, I can guarantee some of them are extremely uncomfortable, this weird shit just needs to be handled differently without forcing people to deal with creepy weird-ass stuff like this when they just wanna go to school and have a normal day without having to see a dick-bulge in the female locker room, that pretty fuckin inappropriate. Just have a genderless changing room, don't force people to deal with something awkward and uncomfortable.
I go to this school, the kid they are talking about actually lives near me aswell. He still has his balls which is why the girls wont let him change. He has his own private changing room at school in the Nurse's office. If you guys would like to know anymore real information about this I would be glad to fill you in.

It takes months, if not years, of therapy sessions to ensure that it's not "just a phase" and that you are suffering from gender dysphoria. Only then will the people in charge of your care give you hormones and start looking at a plan for transitioning. There's a shitload of steps to that process, some of which require you to live as the gender you intend to be for a year or so (because someone doing it to perv (how fucking retarded do you have to be to think someone would do this by the way?) is not going to deal with that for a year just to get into a girls locker room). If you're going to comment on these topics, at least put some fucking effort in at learn about them before you start mashing your keyboard wildly to post inaccurate shit. And if you're not sure about the subject, fucking ask about it rather than posting dumb shit. The trans community on here does actually like to explain shit to people who aren't used to the idea. It's pretty much how I came to understand the basics with ease.

I just try to look back to highschool and I remember that nobody actually used the showers and we never actually changed out of our underwear. So it's really not a big deal. I mean, if there were some chick in the guys locker room it wouldn't be a big deal for me. But also I skipped school all the time. Maybe we should just have changing rooms for everyone. I guess you could use the bathroom stall. I know I would've used it if I actually went to school

What if this girl was biologically born female, but she was attracted to other girls? Should she be forced to go to a different room to change? She might make the other people uncomfortable, right? Should gay men be given different locker rooms than straight men? Those normal straight guys might be uncomfortable with a gay guy looking at them! It's bigoted no matter how you paint it.
What's the general sentiment of the students? But everyone is sort of used to him being around he announced being transgender back in Middle School and he is now a Junior or Senior I believe, so it's sort of a normal thing now. All the parents are aware of him as well basically the entire town knows about it but it hasn't seemed to have a huge impact until now that its on the news. He is in fact a boy right now but he dresses in girls clothing and has long hair he simply feels discriminated against because the girls are refusing to let him change with them because he doesn't feel comfortable with the boys. Also what do you mean by forcing of PC BS?

Are the girls against changing with the student, but are now being forced to do so or are the girls ambivalent about it, but the administration stopped it anyway.

I am literally saying, normal people don't wanna deal with it, therefore they should not have to deal with it. I'm not saying someone is doing it to be perverted, that means these girls should still have to be uncomfortable with it? No. There is no way anyone can literally argue this point, they should not have to deal with something creepy. This makes me feel extremely uncomfortable about the country I live in, how far will they let people take this shit? We already have a woman being called out on "discriminating" for not wanting to fucking see a 50 year old man's hairy ass and balls butt-naked, oh he was a FEMALE, yea fucking right what a crock of shit.
I want to know the nature of the dissagreement. He was not fond of that decision they made but he dealt with it until now.

I sort of understand on principle, but once again, if a girl is uncomfortable with the situation she can just go change in the stalls. I mean, what's the source of the discomfort? Is it thinking "This is just some perv trying to see me naked", or is it "This girl looks has a penis and that makes me uncomfortable". Let's say it's the first. If the intent of the girl is not "I want to see some JB boobies", then is there cause for discomfort? What if there were a lesbian girl in the locker room; a lesbian girl with a massive crush on another girl in the room. It would be inconceivable to kick the lesbian out of the locker room, but it's ok to kick out someone who may have no interest in any of the girls in the room? And if it's the second, what would the reaction be if a ftm trans man was in the girls locker room. Would anybody care? What if this ftm looked quite manly but had a vagina? Would anyone object? What if that man wanted to go to the bone zone with every girl in the room? I can sympathize with feeling discomfort from the situation, but I think the solution for the other girls in the locker room is "go change in private". Who decided its okay for girls to see other girls naked anyways? I don't wanna show off my dick to other GUYS
It looks like the cishet bigots needed a reminder that it is the present year! I wonder when they're going to start giving anorexics diet pills. They're clearly a fat person living in a starving person's body. They see themselves, whenever they look into the mirror, in an entirely different body. Wow just wow!

Why don't you go change in them? Also I understand your other points and I agree.
The girl's are completely against it and the administration at the school offered him the personal changing room i mentioned. They're clearly a fat person living in a starving person's body. They see themselves, whenever they look into the mirror, in an entirely different body. Wow just wow!
I think there's a line to be drawn. I don't really buy the leftwing ideology that we're all born into our personalities, gay straight, trans etc. and therefore if someone is born with a penis but identifies as a female, they are in fact a female and have been since birth. I think that a ton of it is environmental, and I think that our conception of "male" and "female" (aside from the obvious, biological, reproductive definition) is entirely societal. Gender relations differ from society to society and I think largely they're just the result of thousands of years of tradition. If someone says "I'm a girl" and wants to take hormones or wear dresses or makeup, they're just as much of a girl as anyone else, but I don't believe that this situation arose in a genetic vacuum. You can't be genetically predisposed to liking "girly" things and identifying as a girl, if there is no biological basis for what we consider to be "girly" (note that I'm not talking about reproduction here). Anorexia, however, is 100% biological. It's a matter of personal health and mental illness.
