The Empire Strikes back: Gmail takes over hotmails position as most used email service in the world.
Google email service overtakes Hotmail as the most widely used web-based email in the world.
Like many people, when I heard Google was slowly rolling out an email system to a select few people in 2004, I was skeptical. I thought it was just a search engine? Why do we need another email service, and why are they being such jerks about needed to be invited in it? But then my friends got invited, and they couldn't stop gushing about Gmail. When I tried it myself, I never went back, and it seems I'm not alone. This month, Gmail overtook its largest competitor in Microsoft's Hotmail and now reigns as the most widely used email service in the world.
Google actually announced it was leading the world earlier this year based on its own calculations. "Gmail, which launched in 2004, has evolved from a simple email service to the primary mode of communication for more than 425 million active users globally," read a post on Google's official blog.
Third-party numbers didn't match that estimate though, until late last month when the internet analytics company Comscore reported 287.9 million unique users of Gmail beating out the 286.2 million for Hotmail.
Oddly enough, Gmail didn't win United States users; global third place holder Yahoo! Mail still owns a market share in America with a 76.7 million users topping Gmail's domestic population of 69.1 million. Still, Hotmail only has 35.5 million users in the US, so it seems people stateside do not prefer Microsoft's webmail service.
Microsoft's troubles with getting email numbers may be a messaging issue. The Redmond, WA-based company announced Outlook.com this summer and it plans for that outlet to become Microsoft's flagship email service going forward. The Comscore numbers don't include people currently using Outlook.com so perhaps Microsoft still has an edge over Gmail.
Now to be called coldmail.
Edit:
Holy fuck I quoted wrong person :v:
I'm actually surprised that Hotmail was that high in usage still.
-I dont need another box fort, snip-
Amazes me how many people still use Yahoo!
My mother still uses it. It actually doesn't look bad!
I still use hotmail more though
gmail is my "Professional" and public email though
Holy shit this is my second SH thread today. :eng101:
I love gmail and will continue to do so.
you commented on your own thread.. with your response to the article? Why did you just add that to the OP
I remember first applying for Gmail when you needed an invite
I stopped using hotmail and msn services because of the shitty support that was almost completely unhelpful with its copy and paste replies while skimming reports for certain keywords.
For some reason I've never really liked gmail. It's probably because I had to link my youtube account to a gmail account when that was enforced, which ended up with me having to create a new password which I ended up forgetting, which in turn led me to losing both the gmail account and my youtube account. That's more my fault than anything elses, though.
I'm probably just stupid, but I like yahoo better for it's simplicity, as I usually just use email for simple things such as authenticating accounts. I'll have to try gmail out again; it's probably a lot better than I've made it out to be in my mind..
I found that gmail was just faster and more responsive than hotmail, it had better junk filtering and a really nice UI.
Microsoft could come back now, they released outlook as their new hotmail with a really really good UI and it seems faster than gmail.
My friend tried to convince me that gmail was outdated and old news. He uses hotmail.
I still use hotmail and it's a good service for me however the new layout is awful.
I still use hotmail since I have so many things sending mails to my hotmail account
I was using Gmail until outlook.com released. I love it. I haven't actually opened up outlook on my desktop in a long time.

i still use my original one i made when i got a beta invite
Did anybody else read the first four words and think this would be another thread about Disney and Star Wars?
Might use gmail properly now, but make a new account.
Hotmail is awesome, but Google is just awesomer.
I do have a gmail account, but it's more of my spam mail.
I do however love the new outloook.com UI.
I remember back when I got into gmail by invite.
Everyone got invites though so not that that mattered :v:
My mom uses Outlook Express. I used to, but I switched a couple of years ago and never looked back.
used google since probably 08, switched usernames in 10
bought domain for google apps in 12, never looked back
I'm actually surprised that Hotmail was that high in usage still.
I still use it. Only because I made my e-mail account back in like 2001-2 though and I never needed to change.
I've had my Yahoo email since 2002, so I ain't changing lol
i still use my original one i made when i got a beta invite
i would if that account didn't get compromised
wound up having to delete it
I woke up one day and decided I'm never using yahoo again.
That site is, clunky, outdated, and full of shitty ads.
Gmail for life.
I always used hotmail since that is what my parents both used, haven't really had problems with it.
