• Photo Critique Thread: How can I improve?
    57 replies, posted
Trying to grow as a photographer, but not getting enough feedback? This is the thread for you! If you are searching for tips in terms of shooting, editing, composition, or any other variable feel free to specifically seek help in this thread. This thread is designed specifically for those seeking assistance, as opposed to the creative photo general thread which is for sharing shots. Guidelines: 1. This thread is designed to help you become a better photographer or editor. Try not to take anything offensively, it is not meant that way! 2. Post what you like about the photos, what you might not like, and what type of feedback you are looking for 3. Keep the forum civil and friendly please This thread is mostly a test to see if there is interest in this sort of thing. If it remains inactive that's okay too!
I don't mind the idea, but I was under the impression that the Creative photography thread doubled as a critique thread.
I feel that some people apparently don't want critique in the creative photography thread. I think this is more a place for people who are seeking critique of their images.
This is a good idea I think, sometimes peoples work does go unoticed in the Creative Photography thread.
I'll start it off then, some of you may have already seen this photo here in the CP thread, but I want a critique for it. I'm not used to trying different angles (I take A LOT of landscape photos for those of you who remember) and I'm trying to do something at least a little bit different. I am satisfied with the photo as is, but I think it needs something more. What can I do? Not really changing anything about the photo, but then the leading line would be coming from the bottom instead of the right side making it a bit easier to read

The picture could use better contrast, you could try upping the lights a bit in this case. As for taking the photo itself I recommend stopping up in ISO maybe by one whole step so you can use a faster shutter speed. Maybe it's because I'm tired but it doesn't feel like the image is completely in focus and could be sharper.
Thanks!
[IMG_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/KojXP8p.jpg[/IMG_thumb] Went to a drive in movie tonight VERY low light in the back of the lot. Looked up some tips on shooting some stars. Thought I got it, nope. help. Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G ISO 100 30 sec exposure at 1.8G. Autofocus on (I assume it's probably this) Didn't have a tripod, but the camera was sitting still on the ground (on a blanket, don't worry)\ Also tips on this? [IMG_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/PDy9hRo.jpg[/IMG_thumb] Tree is out of focus a bit, didn't take a whole lot of time setting this shot up though. Colors are unedited. But looks too much like instagram filter crap if I try and enhance the saturation even slightly. (also had to photoshop a poll out left of the tree and a small top of a tree or bush in the bottom right corner.
For stars, typically you'll want to focus on infinity and then back it off a tiny amount. Do some test shots at shorter exposures with a higher iso to dial in the focus if that doesn't work.

I did an attempt at a similar picture with a similar result the other day. [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/MhRjLAE.jpg[/thumb]
Tried my hand at some car photography today, did much better than I thought I would. Have some different pictures here, different angles, shots etc, but I have a whole album here with more pictures if you want to give some critque [url]https://www.flickr.com/photos/97059945@N02/[/url] [t]https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5583/14758483837_e0b00d5061_k.jpg[/t] [t]https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3859/14758720649_2f9c5f69f9_k.jpg[/t] [t]https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3865/14758951238_6fa8e7b2ea_k.jpg[/t] [t]https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5591/14944873622_e0991c2fa6_k.jpg[/t] [t]https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5592/14758403837_71ba3a5f63_k.jpg[/t]
They look a bit colorless to me. Like they were taken on an exceptionally overcast day, yet you can see the shadow from the sun.
I've always enjoyed simple photos that can say a lot. There's something about this one I like, but I find it boring. Is there anything here that I can do to make the shot more interesting? post processing wise, I'd probably remove the vignette but you can't really make most pictures magically more interesting through pp, as a general thing.
[QUOTE=Eltro102;45775850]post processing wise, I'd probably remove the vignette but you can't really make most pictures magically more interesting through pp, as a general thing.[/QUOTE] That's why I was hoping for some pointers on composition, or maybe it's just that this subject really isn't that interesting...
id have gone with a vertical frame, so to not cramp the window and the graff [editline]23rd August 2014[/editline] id also shoot perpendicular to the wall rather than at an angle, and in post processing do some automatic perspective correction
Explore, look at 500px, find a photographer you really like - see his style, angles, editing.

I suppose now is a good time/platform to have my two cents about single subject composition. Seriously imho if you are composing a single subject seriously off centre of the frame and leaving nothing in the remaining space to create balance you are cheating yourself out of a good photo. All the negative space you leave on the wider side creates unnecessary tension that leaves the photo's narrative incomplete and the viewer thirsty. By all means continue doing what you're doing compositionally but if you love off centre subject placement then think about incorporating details local to the subject to create balance and a more complete image.

You'll need to experiment in order to find the proper infinity, hopefully it is at this line [img]http://www.glancesatnature.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Infinity-Marking.jpg[/img] sometimes it's dead on, other times you need to move it just a little in either direction to nail it perfectly.

Very nice way of putting your opinion out there. That information will help me and I'm sure it'll help others.
What do you lot think about editing shots a long time after you've presented them? Let's say someone points out something wrong with a photo that you've already shown everyone and is a part of your portfolio, etc. Would it be prudent to edit it, or just live with it and use the newfound knowledge to improve?

what would be prudent about that? treat your portfolio as an ever-evolving showcase of your capabilities. the fact that you can take a shot you edited originally and redo it to fit a set/style is impressive in it's own right [editline]28th August 2014[/editline] you could think of it like a version if you'd like. a re-publishing or whatever
i did it just now
