Return of the Cold War as Royal Navy confronts Russian aircraft carrier group in the English Channel - Polidicks

Three inter-continental ballistic missiles were launched at test sites in the remote east of Russia, in what the military said was a test run for massive nuclear retaliation should Russia or its allies be attacked. The ships, which are currently being escorted by the Navy, are believed to have been returning to the Baltic after manoeuvres in the Mediterranean. They are headed for a naval base in Severomorsk in the north-west of Russia. It is not unusual for Russian warships to pass through the Channel - the same group went through in the opposite direction in December. At no point have the ships entered the UK's territorial waters - which extend 12 nautical miles from the coast of the country. However, according to a UN treaty on sea passage, there is no reason military vessels should not be allowed through so long as they do not threaten the peace or security of a country. The Voice of Russia website - which often carries details of Russian naval movements - reported last month that they were due to return. However the latest passage took place against the backdrop of heightened tensions between the West and Russia over Ukraine. A Royal Navy spokesman said: 'We can confirm that HMS Dragon was activated as the fleet-ready escort vessel. She met the task group centred around the Admiral Kuznetsov.' It kinda looks like an Iowa class destroyer without the guns Let's say the Russian ships and that ship decided War Time, and started attacking one another... Could the UK ship actually do anything being that close to the ships and being a guided missile cruiser?

Sending HMS Dragon to escort the group is just a visible method of shadowing, as in all likelihood there's a SSN trailing them anyway.
