My god, I forgot how cringe-worthy Johnny Yong Bosch's voice acting was in this game.
Then again, DMC1 had Dante's voice crack near the end of the game...
I liked this one, but if I recall correctly; everyone gave it flack. But once DMC rebooted, people suddenly adored this one.

I don't really remember anybody giving DMC4 flak. I can understand if it seemed a little underwhelming after 3, though.
Also, DmC is arguably worse than 2, so I can see why a lot of the critics went easier on 4 after that.
Lady as a playable character? Oh yes, please
OH FUCK YES.

I think that's a bit much. DmC has a lot of problems, but it's not boring and awful to the point of being unplayable, unlike 2.

DMC2 actually had a few positives, at least from what I've played (I never beat it). The game itself is easy, but it's playable.
It is boring though, I'll give you that. Didn't Capcom make fun of the game in Viewtiful Joe?
I liked this one, but if I recall correctly; everyone gave it flack. But once DMC rebooted, people suddenly adored this one.
It was because you re-do the entire game half way through, you literally backtrack.
Still, the gameplay was solid and this adds in a whole bunch more shit, so it's worth it.
Would be one of the greatest games ever made if it wasn't rushed so damn hard. Combat system is still probably the greatest hack and slash combat system ever made though.

I kind of liked DMC4, but it was my first DMC game, so I didn't have much to compare it to. Still felt kind of empty, though.
Eh, number 3 will always be my favourite followed by number 1, i like 4 it's just i dunno there's something about it that just......yeah at least it's not the reboot, Would've been nice to continue the story i guess considering Nero is Vergils son.
The time has come and so have I
edit: Late as fuck.

Nero. The problem with 4 is Nero.

2 is straight up fucked. I knew what I was getting into before actually playing it (I bought the HD remasters recently because I missed being able to play the first and third so much), but it still shocks me at how the difficulties are set up, how the combat is so slow and clunky, and how I've actually managed to miss weapons and amulet pieces.
However Dante has some stylish animations during combat. So I suppose it's not all terrible right? Right??

Nero was never a problem. Once the fans got over the initial shock of "nuh uh, not playing as not-Dante" they seem to have warmed up to him. Shit I think 90% of the current fanfiction from the weirder fans is all about Nero and his arm.

I dunno why people didn't like it. It was a huge deal over DMC3, at least imo. No Vergil but still...
I absolutely loved Vergil's Slash Dimension move in DMC3. Badass as fuck and that "swooooom" noise it made before it hit? mmmmmm
I dunno why people didn't like it.
I remember it.
The first was mainly that Tameem Antoniades (Ninja Theory) had the new Dante design based on himself, including a few of his favorite things, so already Dante was abit out of character since the character never really had an affection for particular things other than pizza, maybe. Tameem was also on record saying some pretty nasty things about the previous Devil May Cry games. Such as how the Dante we all know being laughed out of any bar that wasn't in Tokyo, that he wasn't cool and such wouldn't be changing just because a few internet haters whined about new Dante's hair. I think Ninja Theory even went as far as to showcase, I think, either Dante or Nero from DMC4 photoshopped into a Brokeback Mountain wallpaper or something.
The initial trailer for DmC also wasn't terribly promising. Combine that with Tameem's attitude towards the existing fanbase, and the trend of modern reboots at the time kind of suggested that Capcom would never revisit classic Devil May Cry again, and this would be the new Dante that everybody would follow because he was a bland edgy teenager type. For some time, us doubters were right, Capcom did have to step in to make sure Ninja Theory got the game right on some level.
That is the core of why people dislike DmC so much. It feels wrong that this game is 'Devil May Cry', it isn't right that this black haired guy in trashy clothing is Dante, it's really out there and honestly out of even the general tone of the series when Vergil aborts a baby with a gun. It also drifted between "This is Dante's origin story" and "This is a separate brand" quite often.
Nero. The problem with 4 is Nero.
The problem with 4 is lack of content.
They say the gameplay will be getting some tweaks alongside the 3 extra characters (supposedly with their own openings and endings, sorta like Vergil's story in DMC3) and their costumes, but I'm not really expecting much new besides them. I wonder what they'll tweak? Because I know for certain they're not gonna fix the backtracking seeing as that's still half the game.
Nero. The problem with 4 is Nero.
Nero was really just young Dante. There's pretty much nothing wrong with him besides the terrible voice acting.
Don't really know why this game needs to be re-released in the first place though tbh. DmC4 doesn't really have that many issues from what I remember and the graphics and gameplay aren't that outdated. DmC 3 on the other hand is an absolute godawful mess on the PC that is literally unplayable and is considered better critically afaik (wouldn't be able to confirm that since as stated, it plays like dogshit on the PC).

I don't think it outright fixes the port, but give this a look.

I'll check it out sometime. Looks like it might fix some of the core issues like frame dropping with music and such, thanks.

you left out the big kicker, Every game website telling you that you're a crybaby over not liking the new game, even though it's "just like the old ones" and "you shouldn't hate something just because the hair isn't the same" It was shilling at it's hardest which rubbed me the wrong way entirely.
I liked this one, but if I recall correctly; everyone gave it flack. But once DMC rebooted, people suddenly adored this one.
Well deserved flak really. Repeating stages with Dante, reused bosses, less overall Devil Arms than DMC3. The thing is it still had a fantastic combat system with far more depth than DMC3. Instead of taking that combat and just making a better game, Capcom decided to outsource for no fucking reason despite DMC4 being totally fine gameplay wise.

Playing as him is not nearly as fun as playing as Dante, and there's no way to play as Dante in Nero's levels even after beating the game.
i'm one of the few people it seems who actually preferred playing as Nero in DMC4?
maybe i was just bad as dante but table hopper + using the arm pull to chain combos was super fun
