The Kansas state legislature is currently considering a bill that would prohibit municipalities in that state from building out their own municipal broadband networks. Completely coincidentally of course we’re sure, Kansas City is home to the country’s first Google Fiber municipal network. The bill, called the “municipal communications network and private telecommunications investment safeguards act,” has as its stated goals to: Ensure that video, telecommunications and broadband services are provided through fair competition … in order to provide the widest possible diversity of sources of information, news and entertainment to the general public Encourage the development and widespread use of technological advances in providing video, telecommunications and broadband services at competitive rates Ensure that video, telecommunications and broadband services are each provided within a consistent, comprehensive and nondiscriminatory federal, state and local government framework To that supposed end of increased competition and innovation in the broadband marketplace, the bill (PDF) specifies: Except with regard to unserved areas, a municipality may not, directly or indirectly: (1) Offer to provide to one or more subscribers, video, telecommunications or broadband service; or (2) purchase, lease, construct, maintain or operate any facility for the purpose of enabling a private business or entity to offer, provide, carry, or deliver video, telecommunications or broadband service to one or more subscribers.
Link to the bill: http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2013_14/measures/documents/sb304_00_0000.pdf Source: http://consumerist.com/2014/01/30/kansas-legislature-wants-to-stop-any-other-kansas-cities-from-getting-google-fiber/ Big Cable's getting their asses kissed by corrupt policitians, what's new.
Good thing the government is out to help people, right?
Oh gee google fiber is only you know technological progress
Shit like this makes me unfathomably angry
What? This is bullshit. They're basically forcing shitty service onto people that would otherwise get way better service.
"municipal communications network and private telecommunications investment safeguards act" It's literally an act to keep a monopoly are you fucking serious.
How about we ban Kansas legislature instead?
On one hand, that sucks. Google Fiber seems like a neato thing (as much as I distrust/dislike Google.) On the other hand, I don't think I can be an advocate of state or government controlled internet tubes. Just seems like a bad idea to begin with.

google fiber op government pls nerf
nothing good ever starts with "kansas legislature wants to" sincerely, someone from kansas
Please note that this bill doesn't have any lawmaker as a sponsor It was literally submitted by the cable companies
nothing good ever starts with "kansas legislature wants to" sincerely, someone from kansas
100% agree. Half the reason I moved away from Kansas a year ago was to try and rid myself of one of the most backwards state governments and the retardation that brownback spews daily.
so, they want to ban google fiber for being better, literally. the basis of the bill is that there won't be any competition which will be bad. this is like banning quentin tarantino movies because they get too much praise and prevent ''diversity".
So first we rename our capital to Google, and then we want to ban fiber? Kansas stop what you are doing please.
That's alright maybe they could start in another state Or another Country Like Australia, please come to Queensland Google we need you
"fair competition" pfffffttttttttttttt since when have cable companies ever played fair?
we'll take it assholes
That's alright maybe they could start in another state Or another Country Like Australia, please come to Queensland Google we need you
nooooo come to NSW. I have an 8 megabit line but I'm only getting 1 megabit speeds because it's not jumpered properly and the real estate isn't doing much to resolve the problem (it's their responsibility).
Aim: Ensure that video, telecommunications and broadband services are provided through fair competition … in order to provide the widest possible diversity of sources of information, news and entertainment to the general public Encourage the development and widespread use of technological advances in providing video, telecommunications and broadband services at competitive rates What they did: Except with regard to unserved areas, a municipality may not, directly or indirectly: (1) Offer to provide to one or more subscribers, video, telecommunications or broadband service; or (2) purchase, lease, construct, maintain or operate any facility for the purpose of enabling a private business or entity to offer, provide, carry, or deliver video, telecommunications or broadband service to one or more subscribers. Is that not the complete opposite to what they state their goal to be?
"fair competition" pfffffttttttttttttt since when have cable companies ever played fair?
haha reminds me of Telstra here. every other ISP tries hard to compete with one another, but Telstra just ignores the competition and offers plans that are complete ripoffs yet people actually get their plans through Telstra because they just don't know any better. Telstra - $80 month for telephone rental, ADSL1/2 and an amazing 5GB download quota (woah!) My ISP (Logitel) - $80 month for telephone rental, ADSL1/2 and 200GB combined up/down quota absolutely amazes me wondering how Telstra keeps in business
That's okay, Missouri will take all the fiber please
Excuse me? Fuck no. Everyone else we've had as an internet provider has been complete shit, having google fiber has been soooo much less of a headache. God I hate this state.
Please note that this bill doesn't have any lawmaker as a sponsor It was literally submitted by the cable companies
he reads the news articles before posting in threads about them what a nerd
I don't know a single thing about Google Fiber except for the rabbitvertisements, and that they're possibly an ISP.
So if i'm understanding this correctly, they're saying google fiber is too good and it's unfair for other multi million dollar ISPs to handle? You could, y'know, just have the ISPs actually improve their service instead of stopping other companies from being better. Jeeze it's like all the students in a gradeschool ganging up on the kid that answers question in class during recess for making the rest of them look bad in front of the teacher.

Virgin media for our provider.
I thought Kansas was fucking thrilled to have been chosen first for Google Fiber
So first we rename our capital to Google, and then we want to ban fiber? Kansas stop what you are doing please.
But the capital of Kansas is Topeka. And I'm not even from Kansas.
I really don't like living in Kansas sometimes. .. make that most of the time.
