There’s a new Iron Man. Well, Iron Man for now. She’s still working on the name. The events at the end of the comic book event series Civil War II will result in Tony Stark stepping out of the Iron Man suit and a new character, Riri Williams, taking over, Marvel tells TIME. (Note: Tony’s departure doesn’t mean you know the end to Civil War II yet.)
Riri is a science genius who enrolls in MIT at the age of 15. She comes to the attention of Tony when she builds her own Iron Man suit in her dorm. Creator and Iron Man writer Brian Michael Bendis spoke exclusively to TIME about the creation of Riri Williams with book artist Stefano Caselli and Marvel’s increasingly diverse cast of characters.
Well that's one way to announce a character change.

I should note that this is only for the comics, this has nothing to do with the MCU.
Makes more sense than "cancer patient given the abilities of Thor because fuck it I dunno", at least. Time will tell if the writing is good as well.
So is it Iron Woman now
Well this is fucking stupid
OK one character design problem; affros and helmets do not mix
That's all
Also on a side note, not to be a white guy but are they gonna get rid of all the white guys from comics now?
If Bendis wanted a black Iron Man did he completely forget that Warmachine existed? And she's even Smarter then Tony Stark when he was that age? Fuck off Bendis you hack.
This seems like pandering to be honest. But that's only a first impression maybe, just maybe the writing for the new character will be half-decent unlike female Thor's.

Iron Woman was never a white male. We purged all previous comics to convince you.

Pepper in the RESCUE suit suddenly didn't happen?
Wonder why she too has the reactor surgically cut into her chest

[sp]As it stands right now Rhodey is dead, who's death kicked off Civil War II in the first place. It was slated that this new character was going to be the new War Machine but guess that's not happening.[/sp]
It always seems strange when they invent an entirely new character to replace an old one. Seems like it'd make more sense from both a fan and story perspective for it to be someone established instead of trying to convince us that this new guy'll be great, trust us guys
this is, of course, assuming there's a very good reason to replace a character
So is it Iron Woman now
Iron Maiden

[sp]Bendis' only killed him off because he probably thought Rhodey died in the MCU[/sp]
Civil War II is stupid and Bendis is out of his mind if he thinks anyone is looking forward to it.
Is she gay too?
So at this rate they're going to "diversify" the entire marvel universe by eliminating every Caucasian male, and any new heros that are proposed that are caucasian males will be immediately denied because "what are you, racist?? stop whitewashing the comic world!"
Is she gay too?
She's probably a crossdressing transgender man who's asexual.
Is she gay too?
gender nano non-binary trimale
*sneezes*
hey I was here first merge-murderer
I don't understand why she isn't her own hero. If she has to be tied to Tony Stark then why not make her a character who has her own custom suit, like War Machine. Hell you could even give her a kickass name like.
Iron Maiden
That way you get your new character, you keep your old character, and you have the opportunity to have a new character dynamic. A young up and comer would be a good foil to Stark. Rather than the old wise mentor struggling against a brash youngster, you could have two egos clashing and cooperating.
But I don't know. Fuck coming up with new ideas apparently.
You're really insecure if you think any character that's not a straight white man is pandering.
im gonna stay opimistic on this one
its not magic powers being transferred over it's just a power suit so it shouldnt be hard to make up a decent reason as to why she's the next iron man
Iron Maiden
this would be a vey kickass name ngl
Tony will become an AI before getting brought back via LMD/Cosmic Cube shenanigans.
Look at Steve, they already explained away Hail Hydra in a way which a ton of us predicted exactly.

Jim, you've had too much again, go home.
I see no issues with this as long as "Black Woman" isn't the entire depth of her character. At least they're not retconning Tony Stark out of existence, it looks like maybe he's taking the place of Jarvis this time around, however-

-This has me extremely worried. It just feels like a really childish writing trope, "And she's faster and stronger and smarter and way better than he ever was at that age!"
You're really insecure if you think any character that's not a straight white man is pandering.
Is not it pandering if every time they replace an established character with a transgender/gay/woman/ of color?
Why does every new character have to be a different person doing the same thing and dressing the same way as an established character instead of doing something original?
Watch them make Wolverine into a Native American elderly lady next.
Also I'll be honest Legacy characters don't bother me much usually. My favourite character(Ted Kord Blue Beetle) was introduced to me via his ties to the current incarnation of the hero(Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle). Ted was a C-lister who hadn't been relevant in a couple years outside of the Super Buddies minis and to a lot of people Jaime seemed like a diversity-quota character but ended up being great in his own right.
The thing is Marvel isn't just doing this to C-Listers. Over the last 2 years Marvel has totally scraped their core heroes out and overhauled them in diverse manners. Some of them have been done gracefully(Ms Marvel, Amadeus Hulk and Captain Falcon) and others less so(Fem Thor and Miles(Black Spider-Man) being forced into the main Marvel universe). The problem is less "out with the old and in with the new", its "Marvel never cared about doing Legacy characters before but now diversity is hot EVERYONES getting Legacy'd"

It sounds like an author inserted fan fic.
