TORONTO - Police say the Ottawa man accused in a fatal crossbow shooting in a Toronto library is the son of the man who was killed. Sgt. Tony Vella confirmed that Zhou Fang, who is charged with first-degree murder, is the son of 52-year-old Si Cheng, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Fang, 24, stared straight ahead and spoke softly during a brief court appearance Friday, and was remanded in custody until Dec. 8. Police say Cheng, of Toronto, was shot in the back with a crossbow at the Main Street Library on Thursday afternoon. Fang was arrested minutes later in east-end Toronto. The use of a crossbow is "definitely a unique case in Toronto," Vella added. "You hear about guns, you hear about knives being used, but you definitely don't hear about a crossbow." The killing was witnessed by "a lot" of people in the library. However, Vella said they are still looking for other potential witnesses to come forward. "Some counselling is being offered to the witnesses because it was obviously a traumatic experience for everybody involved," he said. The library remained cordoned off Friday for the police investigation. A post-mortem was to be done either Friday or Saturday. Residents near the library were bewildered by the unusual and deadly attack. "It's shocking, this close to home," said Troy Ross, 39, who lives across the street from the library and often takes his kids there. "You don't think of a crossbow as something for killing people, just as something for recreation," he added. The RCMP, on its website, says the only crossbows prohibited in Canada are ones that can be fired with one hand and are 50 cm or less in length. A licence or registration certificate is not required to own crossbows longer than 50 cm that require two hands to use. Such crossbows are sold in hunting shops across Canada. They can range in price from a couple hundred dollars to $1,000 and more. Vella would not reveal what type of crossbow was used in Thursday's killing but said the suspect had not been charged with any weapons charges. Linus Smith said she was sitting in a restaurant across the street when a man came out of the library with something in his hand, got into a U-Haul truck and drove off. Another man came out of the library and took down the licence number of the truck as it drove off. Smith said she went over to the library to speak to the librarian and was told a man "got hit" inside the library. "Everybody just came out of the library to the back," she said. "It's very traumatizing." "This street is full of kids ... the school is just below the library," she said. Incidents involving crossbows aren't unknown in Canada. A Mission, B.C., father was charged in July with attacking his son with a crossbow. RCMP said the 36-year-old man was shot in the forearm with an arrow from the crossbow. And in December 2009, Montreal police arrested a 42-year-old man following a six-hour standoff. Police later said the man had been holed up inside a house, armed with a crossbow.
Source: http://beta.ca.news.yahoo.com/ottawa-man-charged-1st-degree-murder-crossbow-killing.html
Too much Black Ops.
Where the heck do you get a crossbow?
Where the heck do you get a crossbow?
Any hunting shop?
Where the heck do you get a crossbow?
15th century Europe.
Where the heck do you get a crossbow?
Go to the vaughan mills mall, go to the bass pro shop store. Go to the back where they have stockpiles of guns crossbows and machetes and knifes. Buy one.
Any hunting shop?
The one in my town has a couple, as well as a harpoon gun. No firearms though.
"You don't think of a crossbow as something for killing people, just as something for recreation," he added.
All those late medieval battles? Just a hobby for some of the soldiers.
I thought of a CoD nerd too when I read this story last week.
The one in my town has a couple, as well as a harpoon gun. No firearms though.
The one in my town had bows, crossbows and shotguns. No harpoon guns because there is no close place to use it on.
Any hunting shop?
Sorry, I guess I'm not clued up on these things. Such shops are near enough non-existent in my country.
I always chose the GEP gun or the sniper rifle
"You hear about guns, you hear about knives being used, but you definitely don't hear [del]about[/del] a crossbow."
Edit: wtf my touch screen rated myself.
Yeah, Crossbows are easy to get, they're very legal and we have two. Canada's nice like that. You can get a crossbow for less then 300$ and theres no license, or age check. Edit: Also, in my area, the only hunting weapon you may use for large game are bows. So that's why.
I would have used a ballistic knife.
I would have used a ballistic knife.
This is not WaW
This is not WaW
And WaW isn't Black Ops :downs:
A cheapy 30 dollar crossbow at the Big 5 here was enough to penetrate about half an inch of wood, so it's not surprising that he chose that alternative.
A post-mortem was to be done either Friday or Saturday.
Verdict: death by splinters. In all honesty, what are expecting?
In all honesty, what are expecting?
Yes, what am expecting?
The one in my town had bows, crossbows and shotguns. No harpoon guns because there is no close place to use it on.
Harpoon guns are rare in general, I live near a bay and we can't even get harpoon guns.
Harpoon guns are rare in general, I live near a bay and we can't even get harpoon guns.
Build one.
And WaW isn't Black Ops :downs:
We need a "No Shit Sherlock" rating.
Thread title sounds like the most awesome game of Clue ever.
We need a "No Shit Sherlock" rating.
We also need you to stop posting. But neither will happen so we need to live with it.
Zhou Fang
Interesting name.
I always chose the GEP gun or the sniper rifle
What a shame.
This was right near my ex-girlfriends house, crazy shit.
