Three counties in North Carolina are canceling the voter registration of thousands of eligible residents— most of them African-American Democrats — just days before the 2016 election. On Monday, the North Carolina conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) sued the state and demanded an immediate stop to the practice, which they dubbed “a coordinated effort right out of the GOP playbook to suppress the black vote in the state.”
The lawsuit charges that Beaufort, Moore, and Cumberland counties are challenging voters’ eligibility with no other evidence than a single piece of mail that was sent to their home and bounced back as undelivered. Many of those challenged and flagged for purging, like James Edward Arthur Sr., have moved within the same county and remain legally allowed to vote. Others still live at their original registration address and fell victim to a simple postal-service error.

The lawsuit says North Carolina is violating the National Voter Registration Act, which bans the systemic removal of voters from the rolls in the final 90 days before an election. State officials have defended the practice, claiming that the challenges have been brought individually against thousands of people rather than in a systemic manner.
But the NAACP is also accusing Republicans of conducting a coordinated mailing campaign in the first place in order to challenge the voting eligibility of thousands of people who don’t receive the mailing. Shane Hubers, a Republican who ran for local office last year, challenged the registration of dozens of voters — the majority of them Democrats — in Beaufort County. In Cumberland County, a single individual used returned mail to challenge the registrations of 3,951 voters. In Moore County, N. Carol Wheeldon, the secretary of the local Republican Party, challenged approximately 400 registered voters.
Penda Hair, the lead attorney for the NAACP in the lawsuit, said while she cannot yet prove a conspiracy, “We know that in two of the counties, the people who brought the challenges had connections to the local Republican Party. We also know that the pattern of these challenges is very similar across the the counties.”
In Moore County, Hair added, “the return address of a right-wing group called the Voter Integrity Project appeared on the piece of mail that was used to challenge voters.”
“This is a very pernicious treatment of voters,” she said.
The lawsuit also notes that a disproportionate number of those challenged are black. For instance, African Americans make up only 25.9 percent of the population in Beaufort County, but account for more than 65 percent of the voter eligibility challenges.
imagine having your vote ripped away by some bullshit like this

fuck that, what a complete farce
Great, another reason to say fuck my state. Fantastic.
The NCGOP in recent years has stopped trying to hide its willingness to suppress the minority vote to stay in power. If we had fair voting districts and no ID laws trying to prevent the largely invented boogeyman of voter fraud, many of these "public servants" wouldn't still hold their seats.
but clearly it is the democratic party rigging the election
but clearly it is the democratic party rigging the election
Depends on whichever party is on top in a given state.
but clearly it is the democratic party rigging the election
that's why they control the house and the senate!
Depends on whichever party is on top in a given state.
remind me again about which states have been purging thousands of republican voter registrations?
remind me again about which states have been purging thousands of republican voter registrations?
I should have clarified, I didn't mean to that extreme.
My state's gerrymandered to fuck though.

I don't get why it's such a "but they did this" game. People are crazy if they don't think both of the only two major parties in one of the most powerful countries on earth will do whatever they think they can get away with to stay in power.

Tbh a voter id law works, for me I mailed in my registration and got one quickly.
Problem with these southern states, and John Oliver had a segment about this, is they constantly make you bring in different documents to prove your a eligible citizen.
Like birth certificates, passports, other documents that requires fees and time to obtain that a lot of the african-american population don't have time to do because they are more likely to be busy working 9-5 jobs or work overtime, work night shifts, etc and are unable to get them.
From my perspective, at the age of 18 every citizen should be automatically registered as a voter with a voter id card delivered to them.
You shouldn't need a voter ID, they're completely useless
Trump was absolutely right when he said the election was being rigged. Just not by who.

Finally someone here calling Obama wrong

North Carolina
Shortly after the Shelby ruling, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory signed into law H.B. 589, which terminated valid out-of-precinct voting, same-day registration during the early voting period, and pre-registration for teenagers about to turn 18, while also enacting a voter ID law. Opponents criticized this law as adversely affecting minority voters.
The law was challenged, on behalf of the North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, by a lawsuit filed by Advancement Project, pro bono counsel Kirkland & Ellis, and North Carolina attorneys Adam Stein and Irv Joyner. The suit alleged that the law violates Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, as well as the 14th and 15th Amendments of the U.S. Constitution.
On July 29, 2016, a three-judge panel of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a trial court decision in a number of consolidated actions, finding that the new voting provisions targeted African Americans "with almost surgical precision" and that the legislators had acted with "discriminatory intent" in enacting strict election rules; the Court struck down the law's photo ID requirement and changes to early voting, preregistration, same-day registration and out-of-district voting. The unanimous 3 judge panel ruled that the law targeted African American voters with "almost surgical precision" to counteract increased voter participation among communities of color in the state.

Yeah who the hell needed that one part of the Voting Rights Act anyway.

What does this have to do with Obama?
What does this have to do with Obama?
Obama has said when asked by a reporter 'if there was any rigging during the elections', that there was none at all and its a crazy thought.
its ok if obamas wrong when he said that

I think Obama was probably dismissing Trump's accusations that the democratic party is running some kind of large scale operation to rig the entire election, as opposed to dismissing the actual possibility of any and all tampering or shady practice of any kind.
"gotta be NC"
I live in Moore county.
This shit just keeps hitting closer and closer to home isn't it?
Holy fuck. If this election has shown anything, it's that we desperately need campaign reforms or a complete overhaul.

IDs have their uses. Most Europeans would consider a voting system that doesn't require IDs to be absurd, I think.
However, the issue is that the US isn't some relatively small European country. By introducing compulsory IDs you are risking disenfranchising tons of people. The obvious solution is to have the federal government cover the costs, but since that would be a massive expenditure, it won't happen until the advantages demonstrably outweigh the disadvantages.

Lol why even bother bringing this up? You think it's some kind of victory or something?

correction: it will never happen as long as the republicans and their political spawn exist
Not surprising considering about a quarter of black adults cannot vote due to being felons thanks to the war on drugs
Not to mention that slave labour is still legal as a form of punishment

The Democrats wouldn't spend money like that either.
what use is there for voter IDs when voting fraud hasn't been a real issue in the past other than to limit more people from voting (especially those who work in the hours of the locations you can get said ID, say, lower income people.)

Make it so everyone has a valid Social Security card, and that's the only legal requirement.
Atleast that's how it's done where I am, no fuzz, no bullshit, just remember it and meet up in person.
Also doubles as the ID card so medical personnel can look up the central database for anything medically or health related that's on record.
