Excerpt from a middle-school writing assignment. "Great Job, very impressive!" wrote my English teacher across the top.

An excerpt from my most recent piece of writing. Nobody wrote "great job" across the top of it, but I like to think I've improved nontheless (even if only by a little).

"I didn't choose, you know," he said after a quick bow-wow. "I actually am a dog. I'm just stuck in a person's body."
"Do you really believe that?" Patrick asked.
"Yeah. Does that seem weird?"
Patrick smiled as the cook rang the bell and slid the Dog-Man's food across the counter. "Not at all. I'm something even stranger than a dog."
"Oh?" The man asked, spearing a piece of bacon on his fork and shoveling into his eggs. "What are you, then?"
"A person."
The two men laughed with each other, but it was forced. Patrick knew the Dog-Man would later go home to his dirty apartment and write another suicide note which would end up in the wastebasket. None of his customers were ever as happy as they acted, and they often confided in him their worries, troubles, and shortcomings--not because he was their friend, but because he was a stranger too. Patrick always did his best to listen.[/quote]
