Information Gathering on Motivation/Distraction - Your input is huge!
25 replies, posted
Hey guys!
I'm posting this thread in hopes of gaining insights into the minds of internet users (well, FP users anyways). I'm working on a program that deals with motivation and procrastination/distractions, so first I really need to get opinions from people that matter the most - the people I want to work with and target with my program, meaning you all.
If you're up for it, I have three open-ended questions that I would love for you to provide your thoughts on. You only have to be as specific and detailed as you would like. Thanks for reading, and I look forward to some great, informative responses!

The Questions:
1) What things in your life do you value the most? (Anything at all!)
2) What motivates you to be successful?
3) What things distract you frequently in your life? If you procrastinate, why do you engage in these behaviors?

If you'd rather PM to me for the sake of privacy, feel free. I won't share any details with anyone, if you so wish.
After you guys have given your thoughts, I'm going to try and analyze every single one to try to discover common themes, characteristics and attributes that are present in the facepunch audience. I will definitely post my results here for you guys to view, in hopes that you gain some knowledge yourselves.
Thanks again!
These questions are kind of personal, but I'd love to help you out.
Would it be possible to have a Google form to submit answers to instead? I think a lot more people would be willing to give an honest answer if they can keep their anonymity.
I can do that for sure! I was thinking about it at first but thought that since they were more opinionated questions that a google form wouldn't work too well. But yeah absolutely, I'll add one to the OP! Thanks :D
Alright, submitted! I hope it's what you're looking for!
Yay another survey
Filled it out, I like surveys.
Can I do it later?
Thanks, I guess my input IS pretty big.
Doing this now.
Filled it in, hope it's useful!

Go for it haha, I don't have a deadline.
Thanks to everyone who submitted their input, it helps me so much! :)
Responded, you should maybe consider making the employment section multiple choice. I think you'll find a lot of students will also have part time employment.

Thanks! And that's a great point, I'll see if it'll allow me to change it.
Submitted mine. I need to do these more often, they are kinda fun in a way.
I like these questions, they're the kind of things I wish were asked more often.
Thanks for helping out! :) A lot of people who surveys tend to stick with hard-coded, closed-ended questions instead of asking for opinions. It makes sense because it's harder to see trends in opinionated answers, but though it's harder work I find that I get more useful insights from stuff like this!
Did it, I analyze myself enough so hopefully it helps. You should make a word cloud or something eventually so we can see some results.
Done it, hope it helps.

Hey, that's a neat idea! Thanks for filling it out by the way :)
Thanks as well bs8814 :D
Hey everyone, so I've compiled the replies to the first question, which was:
What things in your life do you value the most?
I took these replies and created a word cloud, so you can visualize what trends emerged:

Since this was just FP users, it's pretty unsurprising. Friends and family topped the results, with computers being a big factor. Other big topics were music, creativity, personal (personality and personal well-being, etc) and learning.
I'll post the results of Q2 and Q3 very soon. They're going to be a bit more difficult to pin down (especially because I don't want to reveal any private matters), but I'll get it out here soon. :)
Thanks again for all of the replies! It really helps :)
Hey guys!
Here's the word cloud for Question 2, which was:
What motivates you to be successful?

As you can see, the largest influences on motivation are:
- peoples' futures
- family and friends
- the mere thought of success itself
- Positive recognition from peers and otherss
- A feeling of self-worth
A big thing to note is that money, or pay, isn't a huge influence, while it is there. I think this shows just how big intrinsic motivators have become with us. We rely on motivation more from others than incentives like pay and promotions to get the job done.
Thanks again for answering! I'll bring up the Q3 cloud very soon. :)
Also did the survey, hope it helps you. Good luck
Loving these results!
Done, good luck
Maybe a section on what you hope to get out of work, or what you expect you deserve from not procrastinating, or working. May not have articulated that very well someone help me out here.

I totally understand what you mean - basically, what benefits, immediate or long-term, do I expect to get from completing tasks and avoiding procrastination?
