So I was cruising Youtube and though to myself, "how many people actually know about the thing we call Salmiakki?" I searched youtube with "Salty Liquorice" and came up with a bunch of videos.
They were rather humorous to watch how people from Japan, Britain and America were given this thing that made them all go:

So what is this weapon of mass disgustion?
That's right, it's a CANDY. A candy that is sweet and at the same time very salty. This awesome thing most people know as Salmiakki is almost a traditional sweet on scandinavia and it's VERY rare to find someone who isn't from scandinavia that like these drops of sheer awesome. (pussies)
Here is a picture of maybe the oldest and most common type of Finnish Salmiakki

Swedes make one of the best type of Salmiakki too, but their version is a bit of an overkill to me, but at the same time the flavour is just mind numbing.
Here they are! I could eat buckets of these if my blood pressure wouldn't raise through the roof in the process.

Salmiakki is salty, because it has some Ammonium Chloride in it. There are some restrictions just because of this little fact. The Salmiakki shouldn't have over 7% of Ammonium Chloride in it, because large consumption of Salmiakki will lead to high blood pressure. In the old days, Salmiakki was sold in drug stores (Pharmaceutical) as a cough medicine. It had much more Ammonium Chloride in it, because it was concidered as a medicine. It was sold as a powder which you were supposed to pour on your hand and lick it. This was dumped, because it was unhygienic.
We Finns put Salmiakki to almost everything! Ice creams, soft drinks, alcohol drinks and heck, we even had Salmiakki flavoured pork for sale at one time. The Alcohol one is the best one of course.
This is the thing we drink like water and it tastes awesome!

Now I talked about some funny reactions earlier! Here are some of the best I found.
Japanese people tasting it

French people drinking the Salmiakki Koskenkorva

Some british dude tasting the Swedish version of Salmiakki

Some people tasting random Finnish candies.
Candies they ate in order:
* Mynthon (Throat mints)
* Puuha-Pete Candies (Bob the builder candies)
* Terva Leijona (Tar flavoured candies)
* Salmiakki
* Another Mynthon

I strongly suggest that you find some of this stuff or order it from the internet! YOU GOTTA TASTE IT! Koskenkorva will be the easiest way of getting to taste it I reckon.

The best^
Lakrisal is fucking awesome! I can't go to a grocery store without buying a roll of those.
This is good, yes.
I eat them all the time. We here, at Estonia get 'em imported quite often.
The first picture you had, contains real fucking awesome ones!
Gah, hate the stuff, despite being half Finnish. Everyone on the Finnish side of the family is crazy about the stuff, though.
That's because you need to be 100% Finnish to unveil the secrets.
I agree, it is awesome. I strongly agree with Swebonny as well.
Got it all over sweden, got I hate it, it almost makes me puke.
Its so good and I didnt even knew it wasnt worldwide.. it tastes great but I guess you rly have to be finnish because of their faces when they taste it lol
the dutch have it too
We call it Salmiak though, but that doesn't change that fact that it's fucking delicious
Liqourice by itself is bad enough, but salty as well? I'd throw up everything I've had in the past 3 days.
Half-Dutch person here,
My Dutch-heritage friends often times sing the praises of the triple salt stuff, I personally don't care for it
I prefer the salted herring...
:siren:Fun fact::siren:
The classic experiment in any Chemistry Class is to make Salty Liquorice. It's easy, but you can't eat it much, because it's pure Ammonium Chloride.
I prefer sweet liquorice, I'm the only person in my year who likes liquorice pretty much, but I live in Britain
I'm eating liquorice :D
Pussies, its fucking awesome.

Actually that's pure Ammonium Chloride what you get.
NH3 + HCl → NH4Cl
I'm not a big fan of it but I like one now and then.
It doesnt actually taste salty unless you think of it. When youre used to it, it tastes like any other sweet.

Oh yeah that's it. We made it in our Chemistry class when I was on sixth grade.
I've tried Dubbel Zout dutch salty black licorice before. It was horrible. I'm sure Salmiakki tastes the same.
I've tried Dubbel Zout dutch salty black licorice before. It was horrible. I'm sure Salmiakki tastes the same.
I don't know if it tastes the same, actually.
I'm not sure if the dubbel zout gets it's salty taste from ammonium chloride (though it surely contains some) or normal salt.
but we've got salmiakdrop as well:)
(drop = dutch word for liquorice)
So, is it like black licourice, but just salty?
Because if so, fucking awesome.
Oh my fucking god. I'm from Sweden but I fucking HATE this. Fucking disgusting.
Oh my fucking god. I'm from Sweden but I fucking HATE this. Fucking disgusting.
Apparently the only Swedish people who like this are actually Finns disguised as Swedes.
I'm half finnish, but I still hate it.
I'm half finnish, but I still hate it.
yeah according to hullu you have to be 100% finnish to like it
100%
or else you can't "unveil the secret" of it
I'm dutch, so I eat it sometimes, I prefer the sweet locorice though.
Apparently the only Swedish people who like this are actually Finns disguised as Swedes.
Nah, most Swedes like it.
I prefer sweet liquorice, I'm the only person in my year who likes liquorice pretty much, but I live in Britain

Same. I don't understand why people hate it so much.
