Twitter acquired Vine, which lets you share short video clips, in 2012 before the service had even launched. It debuted in 2013.

"Nothing is happening to the apps, website or your Vines today," Twitter said in a release, noting that users will be given a heads up and be able to download their Vines before the website and app shutter for good.
official statement for those interested https://medium.com/@vine/important-news-about-vine-909c5f4ae7a7#.1uqms73vo
Vine was pretty unique in how short lived it was, given how popular it was.
What, why?
tbh Vine has some golden shit because of it fuck
official statement for those interested https://medium.com/@vine/important-news-about-vine-909c5f4ae7a7#.1uqms73vo
This is the only place it's mentioned. I'm gonna call shenanigans and assume the blog got rekt until we have further confirmation. Makes no sense for them to shut Vine down and then make a blog post about it but not mention it anywhere else.
Vine creators heading to YouTube when?
Most big vine creators are already vloggers and/or creating youtube videos similar to what they did on Vine. This will just push the rest of them to YT so they continue to make $$
Vine creators heading to YouTube when?
When youtube gets their shit together and starts improving their website
It was fun, but it lost relevance in early 2014. Honestly, now it pisses me off whenever someone browses vine in public. They watch each video like four times before scrolling and everyone else has to hear the obnoxious audio loop
I dont see any reason why it is shutting down. Its a huge platform with a bunch of talent on it. Memes was created (or rehashed) from it, attracted mainstream media attention and overall part of our culture for years. Does not make sense.

without vine, where will the next generation of white teen pop stars with names like Gerstz Schlimmy come from?

I wonder if this is being done due to the fact that Twitter has been losing a lot of money in general.
Thank god.
I've always seen Vine as a mostly broken mess with 70% content stolen from Youtube, which then returns to Youtube as those awful compilations videos you see everywhere. It was nice for sharing videos of your pet but otherwise it seemed kind of pointless. Shame about the job layoffs at least.
When youtube gets their shit together and starts improving their website
So never.
NOOO, there was hilarious shit on there! :(
There were some good creators but a lot was overshadowed by a bunch of garbage "Vine Celebrities" like Curtis Lepore and Brittany Furlan that put as much time planning their videos as the video length.
What's gonna happen to bill wurtz?
From the BBC article
Vine seemed a natural progression for Twitter when it was launched in 2013. Six-second videos seemed a great pairing for a service famed for its punchy 140-character posts. But in time, it was clear Vine just couldn't compete with short video on Snapchat and Instagram, and that's why Twitter has decided to shut it down. And with Twitter looking to shed a fair bit of its workforce (again), there really is no justification for a separate app. What's not clear is whether Twitter plans to integrate Vine-like features into its main app - I'd be very surprised if they binned the format altogether. Vine has a dedicated fan base, and there are many Vine celebrities out there. Vine has a dedicated fan base, and there are many Vine celebrities out there. But you're almost as likely to see a Vine re-shared on Facebook than you are to see it on Vine itself - perhaps that was part of the problem.
Doesn't matter, the best videos have already been uploaded to youtube and appear in several different "FUNNIEST/SEXIEST VINE COMPILATION MARCH 2013" with a big breasted woman with her nipple almost showing as the thumbnail

For those who made stuff on Vine (original content) you had some great stuff, limitations usually result into great things which is exactly what Vine offered

I don't really see how snapchat is comparable to vine in terms of use.
"Our platform has been loved by millions. Today, we're shutting it down. Thank you."
I don't really see how snapchat is comparable to vine in terms of use.
On a personal communication level, people are more likely to post to their Snapchat story rather than go on Vine.
