China considers Taiwan to be a wayward province and has never renounced the use of force to bring it under its control. The United States has no formal ties with Taiwan but is bound by law to help it defend itself and is its main source of arms.Beijing regularly calls Taiwan the most sensitive and important issue between it and the United States. In September, the U.S. Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act for the 2018 fiscal year, which authorises mutual visits by navy vessels between Taiwan and the United States. At a Chinese embassy event in Washington on Friday, diplomat Li Kexin said he had told U.S. officials that China would activate its Anti-Secession Law, which allows it to use force on Taiwan if deemed necessary to prevent the island from seceding, if the United States sent navy ships to Taiwan. “The day that a U.S. Navy vessel arrives in Kaohsiung is the day that our People’s Liberation Army unifies Taiwan with military force,” Chinese media at the weekend quoted Li as saying, referring to Taiwan’s main port. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said late on Saturday that, while Chinese officials seemed to want to try and win over hearts and minds in Taiwan, they also had been repeatedly using threats that hurt the feelings of Taiwan’s people. “These methods show a lack of knowledge about the real meaning of the democratic system and how a democratic society works,” the ministry said. China suspects Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, who leads the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party, wants to declare the island’s formal independence. Tsai says she wants to maintain peace with China but will defend Taiwan’s security. Relations between China and Taiwan were becoming even more complex and severe, Zhang Zhijun, head of China’s policy-making Taiwan Affairs Office, told a visiting delegation of the New Party, a small pro-China Taiwan opposition party on Monday. Taiwan independence forces are trying to root out Chinese culture in Taiwan and are the gravest threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, the official Xinhua news agency cited Zhang as saying.
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-taiwan-usa/china-taiwan-spar-over-chinese-diplomats-invasion-threat-idUSKBN1E506A
BEIJING (REUTERS) - Taiwan will fail in its efforts to get foreign support for its cause, the Chinese government said on Wednesday (Dec 13) after a senior Chinese diplomat threatened Taiwan would be attacked the instant any United States warship visits the self-ruled island.China considers Taiwan to be a wayward province and has never renounced the use of force to bring it under its control. In September, the US Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act for the 2018 fiscal year, which authorises mutual visits by navy vessels between Taiwan and the US. That prompted a senior US-based Chinese diplomat to say last week that China would attack Taiwan the instant any US navy vessel visited Taiwan. Asked about the remarks at a regular news briefing, An Fengshan, spokesman for China's policy-making Taiwan Affairs Office, said Taiwan was an internal matter for China and that China opposed any form of military contacts between Taipei and Washington. "What I want to stress and point out is that any relying on foreigners to build onself up or plots to harm national sovereignty and territorial integrity will be opposed by the entire Chinese nation, and cannot succeed," An said.
http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/china-warns-taiwan-not-to-rely-on-foreigners-after-attack-threat Go fuck yourselves, China
1) fuckoff china 2) please for the love of god someone make sure trump can't tweet about this.
For real, would they? I'm not up to speed on east Asia geopolitics but does China any real response from anyone to worry about aside from some angry letters and a mean tweet or two? Does anyone have Taiwan's back?
Crimea v2, here we go
The whole “Taiwan’s not real” thing isn’t new but this threat seems kinda out of left field

I don't think anyone's willing to go to war for them, and I don't know if they have any military allies.

It's just bluster.

Taiwan is China's Falklands, always blaming things on it, always trying to bully it, and constantly threatening to do something to it but in the end China makes out quite a bit from trade with them and successive governments, even the independance ones, have walked a narrow line of appeasing both their constituents and the chinese government Normally the US state department also has intervened but my guess is we do fuckall this time which is probably why china feels emboldened right now.

This is a diplomatic disaster waiting to happen.
