Tropes versus Men (or, as it’s also known, “An analysis of male roles and misandry present in modern video game media”) has disappeared without a trace. During the month of February the campaign was put under review by the site’s administration, although I am told the more detailed reasons are available only to the campaign’s organisers.

As of publishing I have heard back from only one of the charities, the Prostate Cancer Foundation, who informed me that a donation of that amount on that date does not exist in their system.
omg women need to check there privilege
Men are always the bad guys in video games, this needs to stop
I can't help but laugh when I hear about anyone imagining misandry in popular culture.

They're usually cockwads, like these guys.
I wonder how many the womens struggle for equality in America dies each year for this cause.

Hitler is basically the most evil person ever and guess what? Always portrayed as a man.
This is obviously not a parody in response to TROPES VS WOMEN.
nope.
super serious.
I know it sounds nuts but MRAs genuinely believe the bullshit they rant on and on about
Apparently Anita Sarkeesian came out with part one of Tropes Vs. Women.
Took her nine months.
After getting more than $150,000 over her funding goal.

Yeah, you see, actually making a video series takes much longer than scamming a bunch of people out of their money and then disappearing.

money well allocated for the feminist movement
The irony is so iron-y that I can taste iron. Wait, never mind, that's my developing gum disease.

She still scammed them, she just didn't disappear afterwards.
Yeah, she just took an extended vacation to play old games.
She still scammed them, she just didn't disappear afterwards.
idk if she "scammed" them. they kickstarted a project where she would talk about tropes in video games and that's what they are getting.
whether it's top notch critical analysis is quite debateable(please don't debate it here we have a thread already!), but i mean she is fulfilling her end of the bargain.
I didn't really agree with some of the arguments Tropes vs Women was trying to make, but petulant overreactions to it, the way they arrogantly tried to equate the suffering of men to women and acted as if the video itself was some kind of grave insult toward all of male-kind was just pathetic.

The only insult to men surrounding the whole Tropes vs. Women thing is how so many men decided it would be a good idea to send her rape threats over it
Those people are insults to men
That money isn't being translated into production value. How does standing in front a camera talking cost thousands, what bone head would think it would? She's worse than a lot of the ridiculous stuff that gets funded on kickstarter because everything she has done is already done for free.
her goal also wasn't $250,000 bud. she got that money partially because of massive support and partially because of a massive misogynistic backlash against her.
wasn't her original goal a few g's? that seems reasonable when you take into account the fact that she needs to spend hours upon hours playing games she doesn't like(and had to buy, some for $60 a pop), writing analysis and critique of said games, organizing them into themes and main ideas, and all that shit, on her own.
not to mention some of that money is probably used for living expenses considering that each hour she spends playing games is an hour she could spend doing something otherwise profitable(opportunity cost, basic economics concept), so if she has to cut back on her other work(idk if she does or what her career is anyways) or if it cuts into her normal projects she certainly deserves compensation for it.
[editline]9th March 2013[/editline]
her original goal according to a quick google search was $6000. that's not a lot of money if she had to upgrade any video, audio, or editing equipment/software, as well as buy games, and consoles to play said games(some that aren't manufactured anymore).
[editline]9th March 2013[/editline]
and you can say "oh yea well a lot of people do this without kickstarters", and you would have a point, but these people are generally hobbyists who bought the shit regardless. i don't know if anita is some big gamer or even enjoys most games much. she is doing this because she felt it would benefit the world, and people gave her money because they felt the project would benefit the world somehow.

I don't think she bought most of them. I remember some picture with her smiling behind a mountain of gifted games.
(Just nitpicking.)
I don't think she bought most of them. I remember some picture with her smiling behind a mountain of gifted games.
if so, you can thank the misogynists and dickwads who made such a big fuss over this, rather than blaming anita sarkeesian for being gifted games.
what is she supposed to do? give the money back? can you do that with kickstarter?
[editline]9th March 2013[/editline]
this could have been a relatively small affair that a few people donated to, got a few videos they may or may not have liked, and that could have been that.
instead you get this sort of situation where such a big shitstorm is created that now no matter how hard she tries, she will probably not be able to fully fulfill the expectations set.
Yeah, you see, actually making a video series takes much longer than scamming a bunch of people out of their money and then disappearing.
I get that. The thing is, her videos didn't change at all and there was hardly any differences in them from the other videos she had been shelling out. There was no reason for her to take over eight months.

maybe one video didn't take over 8 months, though? you know tv series often begin shooting and writing well before the season starts to come out. she had to play a lot of games just to get this first video out and maybe content from those games are going to be used for future videos as well.
the organization and writing that goes into producing this series is arguably staggering and it should be no surprise it would take a long time to do the series.

Probably looking for all those history lessons is what took the most of her time. Its great she gives us a definition and examples of this "damsel in distress trope", but she goes beyond defining it, to the point where she's trying to drill something that's already pretty nailed in our heads. Do we really need to hear about ancient Greek or medieval stories of such? Could've stopped at the Perseus story really.
Yeah, you see, actually making a video series takes much longer than scamming a bunch of people out of their money and then disappearing.
Yep, it takes $150,992 to make a series of videos you were already making for 2 years running.

so much of a parody that they literally took money for it?

It's not the cause you should be concerned about.
If anything I think she easily passed all of her previous expectations, there is no such thing as bad press. She's been made a martyr and has a much larger audience (and budget) than she probably would have never gained otherwise because a bunch of morons spammed her with middle school tier badmouthing. Now she's stuck with 250,000+ dollars and no meaningful way to use it. Honestly, I'm not going to make the assertion but I'd be damned if Kickstarter didn't allow you to cease funding without losing the money already pledged if you made your goal. If such an option exists, then she's to blame.
i think that the fact that she got the money in the first place is optimistic. it means that a lot of people are paying attention to the issues in society and are condemning the misogyny that came about from her kickstarter.
I'm a bit unsure about your characterization of her as a person with a massive burden on her shoulders. She's playing video games and detailing what goes on in them. The latter part isn't even necessary. She could merely watch cut scenes online to get whatever semblance of plot or characterization is in each game while completely avoiding the repetitive head exploding and gun shooting portions that make up a majority of most popular games these days.
i'm giving her the benefit of the doubt and assuming she wants to do the analysis right. she wants to immerse herself in the game and get a feel for how women are portrayed throughout the content.
also it's a catch-22 for her because if she analyzes the games from the cutscenes and videos, people will say "well you didn't even play the game! why should i pay attention to this" and if she does and gets money to do it people say "well you could have just looked at cutscenes and you don't deserve all this money just to sit around and play games!"

thats an awful approach to game criticism. a game's tone, themes, and presentation of itself can be at odds with it's gameplay.
