But Bruce Campbell just can’t get enough of the high life. Bored of bricks and mortar, the 62-year-old US engineer has spent a decade and $US220,000 ($214,000) converting a Boeing 727-200 jet into his dream home. As he nears the end of his project he’s put a call out for any Australians who want to join him in creating another bigger and better plane home. “I'm looking for a location and partners for a far more intelligently and elegantly executed Airplane Home v2.0 project,” Mr Campbell said. “If anyone would like to see a beautiful Airplane Home in their community, they should contact me.” Any takers? Mr Campbell bought the plane back in 1999 for $100,000, with additional logistical costs of $114,000. But he says it’s all been worthwhile, as living in the plane full-time is “exhilarating”. Tucked away in the woods of Oregon, US, the plane has been converted into a bedroom, lounge and office with its rows of seats ripped out. Mr Campbell cooks his meals in the former cabin-crew kitchen and has also built a shower in the main cabin area. His possessions are stacked up in the cabin. He enjoys spending most of his time in the cockpit. Challenges he faced during the project included installing a working plumbing system and getting the three toilets working again. He loves to give tours of the home and says many people fall in love with it. “It’s not for everybody,” he said. “But I think it is for a lot of people and it is definitely for me. I absolutely love it.” Read more: http://www.news.com.au/travel/news/high-life-would-you-live-in-a-plane/story-e6frfq80-1226497079678#ixzz29S2FtKQc
I'm curious how he got it into the middle of a forest...
it sounds like it'd get a bit cramped
I wouldn't trust that wood under the wheels
That sounds like a great place to hole up. Its certainly has more space than the average home.
I wouldn't trust that wood under the wheels
You kiddin me? It looks like it was placed there with care!
“If anyone would like to see a beautiful Airplane Home in their community, they should contact me.”
gee, who wouldn't want to have a rotting old plane stacked on wooden planks in their community?
If I had an airplane home, I'd put Microsoft Flight Simulator on a PC in the cockpit. I'd set up all the controls to work and put monitors over the windows. It'd be awesome. Oh, and you could fit the whole thing out with hydraulics like on those motion simulator rides. That would be so awesome.
is the front really being supported by a bunch of old wooden pallets? :v:
Looks like a good gust of wind would blow it off that pile of wood.
Looks more like a fallout shelter than an actual house.
But Bruce Campbell just can’t get enough of the high life.
Bruce?
Looks tacky with the wood supports; would have been better with a discrete concrete foundation.
Looks tacky with the wood supports; would have been better with a discrete concrete foundation.
Tacky? Style and design aesthetics are the least of my concern when it comes to a multi-tonne aeroplane standing on top of some wooden pallets
I'm curious how he got it into the middle of a forest...
Cut to parts, transported piece by piece, welded together at destination.
Cut to parts, transported piece by piece, welded together at destination.
Sounds awfully complicated and difficult. Not so sure that's how it was done
Sounds awfully complicated and difficult. Not so sure that's how it was done
"Awfully complicated" is hardly an excuse for transporting companies. These days, moving multistory houses is nothing out of ordinary. Of course the plane could also be airlifted if they'd cut the wings off, but I don't think that's possible due to the dense forest there. [editline]16th October 2012[/editline] Actually I take that back, there's enought open field on that spot for them to drop it there.
I have to admit, I am quite jealous. While it would be a pain in the ass to set all your shit up, it would be really cool to live in a plane.
There are a lot of improvements that could be made to that plane that would've made it sooo much better than what he has right now, but if he likes it that way, I can't knock it.
Looks really kinda shitty inside... thought he'd have plasterboarded it up and gone for modern appeal like that hostel above, instead of this... What if he made it able to fly? Flying home!
it looks terrible
He hasn't really decorated it, looks like a flying office the Army might have or something. I would've done wood floors and nice furniture.
I take it you don't understand how impossibly difficult it is to weld thin sheets of aluminium, do you?
No, I have no experience of working on different metals nor do I know much about the manufacturing methods of producing a commercial aircraft. I am merely guessing how that plane was put there. [editline]16th October 2012[/editline] It infact was taken apart, transported, and put together again at destination http://inhabitat.com/oregon-man-lives-inside-727-airplane-home-in-the-middle-of-the-woods/
What looks like a jetliner that has miraculously landed in the woods is actually one man's dream retreat! Inspired by his passion for the aircraft as well as the need for shelter, Oregonian Bruce Campbell converted a Boeing 727-200 into a home. Campbell is not looking to be in Better Homes and Gardens - instead of turning the airplane into a full-fledged house he has adapted his daily life to live onboard an airplane. In a true labor of love, Cambell bought an entire decommissioned plane, took it apart, and reassembled it in a thicket of trees - making it seem almost as if the impossible happened. What a dump

It's not really converted, it's pretty much just a plane as-is. I don't like it.

[editline]16th October 2012[/editline] I'd rather build a house out of logs for the price of a chainsaw, fuel, hard work and a land permit.
