I've only played FFX (and liked it a lot), how does this one compare? Is FFXII a good game with its story and gameplay?
Honestly are any of the Final Fantasy games good because every one that comes out has reviews that range from Masterpiece to Overrated Hot Garbage

I mean, they are all different games entirely pretty much, besides the focus on certain mechanics (which have also differered throughout Final Fantasy's lifetime) and aren't at all connected.
So, that's why they are varied in reviews.

You'll probably enjoy this one, but it's a bit different combat wise, it's like a mix of real-time combat and turnbased, so it doesn't have random encounters.

The different Final Fantasy games generally have different class systems, and the later ones introduce new combat systems as well. Play can vary from game to game, and obviously as can enjoyment. I'm personally biased against the later ones just because I prefer the turn-based system, but I still enjoy them thoroughly.

Final Fantasy 12 is a war and politics-based story. Smaller country sandwiched between 2 empires kinda deal (Not spoilers at all, that bit's explained in the first 30 minutes / tutorial of the game).
Gameplay is you have 6 main characters but 3 max on the field. Enemies openly wander about and you have the action bar that fills up before your qeued action is used (attack is on repeat unless you specify something else). You can apply "gambits" to your party, which is basically setting up their AI to attack and respond to situation the way you want them to. You also have the option of manually doing something else. I personally have manual control of one character while setting up the rest of the party's AI.
There's also the License board. As of the Zodiac Edition, there are 12 preset character builds that you choose and build upon. Defeating enemies gives licence points, which are then used to allow a character to use new / upgraded weapons, armors, and abilities. Levelling up has no effect on the licenses.
I love all the Star Wars-ish music and inspiration in this one, and though the character plots aren't as memorable as other FF's, some like Balthier & Basch remain great to me. Honestly, this and that Tactics/XII themed raid in FFXIV just make me want a new game set in Ivalice someday.

FFXII is Star Wars. Right down to the blasters and black vests.
This is a strange FF storywise as their really isnt a main protagonist, its not like a Tidus or Cloud situation.
Main character is essentially Ashe, but we start and follow the game in Vaan's perspective before all the characters are assembled. At that point it follows all of them together.
just a reminder that ff12 has the same combat system as dragon age origins, as in you get to setup gambits (tactics in dao) that lets you do shit like "if hp < 30% = cast heal" and what not.
also it came first.

also port is decent. some problems with fullscreen and vsync, but if you use borderless and turn vsync off it runs buttery smooth at 60 fps (console release was only 30 fps).
