Goodbye Australia's highest speed limits (i.e. no speed limits)
Although the former Country Liberals government loudly championed open speed limits on sections of highway in the Northern Territory, the new party leader says it is clear voters wanted them dumped.
The former CLP government opened speed limits on a 350-kilometre stretch of the Stuart Highway between Alice Springs and the Ali Curung turn-off in central Australia, but that has been revoked by Labor after it won the August election.
CLP Opposition Leader Gary Higgins said voters were obviously in favour of the move.
"The people had that choice at the last election, it was one of the issues there [in Central Australia and the Barkly region]. They clearly voted that they wanted those [speed limits]."
Health Minister Natasha Fyles said open speed zones had been scrapped for safety reasons.
I really can't agree with the complaint that an open speed limit (in comparison to a 130 km/hr limit) increases the risk of injury or death. At that speed if you come off the road you die, regardless if you were doing 130 or 200. If anything, on long distance driving, fatigue is what kills, not speed.

rolling your car in the middle of nowhere kills you, fatigue is a poor excuse since you can always idk... pull over for a few minutes to build up your energy....whereas a crash from driving off the road pretty much is the end there. 130-140kph seems pretty fast enough, at the upper limit to most cars anyways
130 kph or 80~mph in America isn't even that outrageous.

Protip... open the driver window or take off your shoes and socks in the car.
i think 130k is fair honestly, you can still do more but you run the risk of a ticket and your life

anything over 60 on country roads is pretty hair raising especially in the less flat parts of this country, 80 on the highway isnt even totally safe but its at least on the highway
also cars arent really designed to be safe at those speeds so you really are just being too risky

I'm not certain what your argument is. That rolling is more likely at 130 or faster? Or something?

When I went south Dakota I fell in love with the 80mph speed limit

drive off a road with no barriers at 80 mph (130 kph) is a pretty quick way to die and at 130 its easier to get in an accident especially if the roads arent well maintained or designed for those speeds

Speed differential is dangerous. With speed limit people can generally agree what is the good speed to travel, but without everyone can go at any speed. Without it, people can travel at any speed and possibly cause rear-end. Someone going at 200 km/h can be taken by surprise if someone ahead is traveling at 100 km/h and fail to slow down in time.
Stopping distance from 200 km/h is two and half times what it is from 130 km/h. And even kangaroos can do a lot of damage at 200+ km/h.
You're going to die if you have an accident at 130KM/h and you're not slowing before you hit or attempt to miss something.

It's a single lane each way road though - so there is no reason why that should happen. You have clear view of what is ahead since it is completely straight.

This is the highway in question, the reason the limits were removed in the first place is because it's pretty much the longest, straightest stretch of nothing you could drive on. The only thing that would cause an accident is fatigue or a kangaroo out of nowhere (Which would fuck you up at any speed)

To be honest as long as they aren't endangering anyone else I don't see why not.
As a german I applaud australia. Speed limits on highways are dumb (unless the road geometry calls for it of course).
So no more speed limits in NT? Cool, if people want to die going 220 Km/H, then it's their decision.
I'd go that fast if it was a nice wide long straight road. I'm a speed demon, but a careful one.

I say they pave the roads good, at least if they are going to do this, make it as safe as possible.

Uh no, you have it around the wrong way. They're bringing back speed limits of NT highways.
If you roll over or hit something at 80 kmph or higher you're dead anyway. If the road is well maintained and has no relatively complex turns and curves, why is there a speed limit?
My car bounces off 105 anyway so ¯\(ツ)/¯

Because a lot of our pollies think that Australians are incapable of personal responsibility. I think it's really stupid considering that accidents went down when it was un-restricted.
I'm used to driving 110 km per hour at absolute most in Western Australia, anytime I go over to the U.S. it's crazy how much faster traffic moves there by example.
So they re-introduced the speed limits? Talk about going backwards, jesus fucking christ.
Uh no, you have it around the wrong way. They're bringing back speed limits of NT highways.
Fuck off, that's stupid. I'll just take my plates off in NT then, what are they gonna do? Nothing, because NT cops are morons and I'm not aboriginal.
It's stupid though, where else are you mean to see how far your car get, it costs an arm and leg to ship to Germany.
Also, the way you titled the thread was misleading and confusing, do a better job next time.
i think 130k is fair honestly, you can still do more but you run the risk of a ticket and your life
It's a straight line for fuck sake, oh no I could hit..... nothing.
I guess being from Victoria you have to favour the law or the cops won't protect you from all those criminal gangs running around down there. Beside Fruxy, I don't think your Hyundai could even do 130Km/h.
Having driven on the outback highways the lesser time you spend on that thing the lesser are your chance of crashing. Which is why the speeds were lifted in the first place.
With long, straight roads with almost no traffic the only thing that would kill you is the roos.
Besides you tend to be more alert the faster you drive which means you'd pay more attention which also negates fatigue.

how about you read more than the title. god entitlement
What is with people saying you'll die if you crash or drive off the road at 80mph(130kph)? And that cars aren't designed to be safe at that speed? Are crash test regulations that lax in Australia? In the US almost anything modern will save your life if you drive into a post at 80mph. All police cars, for example, are rated for no injuries when getting rear-ended at 70. Driving off the side of a country road at 80 isn't a death sentence either, Jesus. I rumbled off the side of a country lane due to stupidly deciding to drive way later than I should. I was doing 75 and my car was fine, I just steered back onto the road.
how about you read more than the title. god entitlement
Ah no, I can do as I please.
I dont see people complain about germany

that's a decently smooth looking road to be doing those speeds on, highways in the Chicago area here are usually driven between 65 and 80mph (if traffic is open enough to allow it), and our roads aren't exactly known for their pristine condition or straightaways. If our state's notoriously shit drivers can handle 3-6 lanes of side by side traffic at those speeds I'd trust a few spread out average joeys on that road
