A woman who shared a video of herself urinating on an American flag has asked that people stop targeting her family, saying they do not support her actions.
Her Facebook account is gone obviously due threats.
But throughout the internet, they have her video peeing American flag as means political activism.
Edit: removed ignore me
I mean it's pretty fucking shitty to go after the family. I wouldn't mind getting death threats but for fuck sake don't threaten my fucking family.
People always go nuts over this sort of shit. It's just an excuse to act outraged about something is all.
Regardless of how much you dislike someone desecrating the US flag, your response should never escalate beyond "well that's a bad thing".
Actually caring that much about a piece of fabric is ludicorus.
Even censored, that video was pretty disgusting to watch.
She shouldn't be surprised by criticism, but death threats is too far.
Oh no, think of the poor fabric.
Rape and death threatening psychos aside, I find what she did incredibly self-indulgent.
"Lemme just film myself pissing on something and put it online for everyone to see"
tbh wars on symbolism should stay symbolic
he could have just pissed on a picture of her

So is every post you or I make on Facepunch.
People always go nuts over this sort of shit. It's just an excuse to act outraged about something is all.
People go nuts over this stuff because its become a precedent, a standard has been set that if you don't freak out and go nuts over something then you don't care enough about..well, whatever.
This applies to all ends of the political spectrum and I swear to god theres almost been a conditioning over the last 15 years to be the most outraged over whatever, then you aren't a good person. I used to think of it as people desperately seeking attention, but due to how much more integrated social media has become in the last decade I'm seeing it as something more.
I've honestly seen people get angry at other people for either not agreeing with them enough, not being as angry as they are, or not being as dedicated as they are to...well, whatever. Social cause, news story, politics, etc.
I don't get it. I'm older than a lot of people and was raised to let people be people and just do my own thing and there are things I get worked up about too, but for fucks sake the idea of destroying someone else for being an asshole is kind of foreign to me and is the type of shit that would have been mocked, not embraced, 10 or so years ago on the internet.
Now its just becoming regular.
So is every post you or I make on Facepunch.
Aside from the kilometer wide gap from good to bad taste, between typing words on a keyboard and filming yourself taking a piss, sure I guess?
But then again, posting on Facepunch is habitual for me and I don't hope to garner attention, at least not a lot of it, from more than a handful of people. Unless her usual response to issues is to film herself pissing on things, she was obviously trying to get attention to herself by doing something taboo.

...so you're either not responding to the right person, or you legitimately think that threats of violence over a piece of fabric are justified in any way.

Its not fabric to lots of people, even though it is to you. :/

This is a deflection from the root question, which is whether or not you find it justifiable to threaten people with violence for damaging a flag.

I wasn't responding to the root question though, I was responding to a point you made.

Yes, and nobody gives a shit about that part of it. It's obvious you weren't responding to it because it's the actual point of my post, and you didn't know how to respond to it.

If no one gave a shit about that part of it, you wouldn't have bothered to respond to begin with. I didn't respond to you to insult you or presume anything about you other than your opinion of the flag being a piece of fabric, not sure why you're thinking I'm somehow incapable to responding to a point you've made when thats exactly what I just did.
Not sure why you also dont like that I didn't respond to the point you wanted to make and instead responded to your perspective of the flag. Is there some kind of etiquette I violated by doing so?

Congratulations, you shared your opinion on the symbolism of the flag.
Now we can focus on an actually important aspect, like the threat of violence for damaging one.

Is it really surprising she's being threatened though? Was this wholly unexpected? It is the American flag we are talking about and if past incidents are anything to go off of she should have expected some psychos to make death threats. She should have chosen a more tactful manner of protest.

Sure, I think its time we executed people for damaging a flag, hell lets set a standard for irony by burying the bodies of those executed for damaging a US flag next to military cemeteries so that in death the spirits of the soldiers who died for the flags can torture the souls of those who burned, spat, pissed on the flag.
I think it should also be a ceremonial event thats broadcast on cable television and should eventually be turned into a syndicated program where the condemned should be given trial by combat against a giant mechanized soldier that stalks them through the arena and the surviving condemned should not only be pardoned but rewarded by a career in television news broadcasting followed up by guests spots on game shows.
In fact lets kick it up a notch further! Not only should this become our national sport but it should be an Olympic one! Students all over the world can spend years learning how to train for it by burning flags and posting stupid videos of them doing it online and the internet can judge who they want to see compete and who gets covered in honey, buried up to their necks in the sand and eaten by atomic ants while we get non stop commercials for monster energy drink airing on CN-fucking-Ns analysis of the game!
Of COURSE theres no fucking way the threat of violence for damaging the flag is acceptable! Its a case of one woman being a troll online followed by one idiot taking the bait and going full retard!

I'm not sure why you're telling me it shouldn't be surprising, when I never once indicated that I was surprised, nor was anything I said related to the likelihood that someone would be insane enough to send her death threats.
It seems like you're trying to justify the death threats by saying it's "common" and that she should have expected it. If that's your point, it's ludicrous.

Cool, but I was never particularly interested in your opinion regardless. You'll note I was actually asking someone else.

Does this means I get to keep the rights to the gameshow idea to myself or do I have to share them with you?
I know patriotism is a concept that escapes most the people on Facepunch but the flag happens to represent a lot.
It's a concept that escapes people here much in the way the concept of Santa does.
I know patriotism is a concept that escapes most the people on Facepunch but the flag happens to represent a lot.
I'm a patriot and if someone pissed on the Swedish flag I'd shrug and let them, because they're exercising their right to protest the things they disagree with in this country. Like who cares?
Although I hope the irony isn't lost on anyone.
Idiot who pees on a flag gets threatened by other idiots.
broke my merge, rude
Why is she an idiot?

I've personally always held the belief that desecrating the United States flag is the single most patriotic thing you can do, because by doing so, you are exercising of the most sacred American rights: the right to voice your opinion of the government without any fear of repercussions from that government.
I generally reserve this for burning flags, but I guess it works for pissing on them, too. Either way, by desecrating the flag, you are demonstrating the ultimate ideals for which that flag stands.
Penn & Teller put it pretty well, with much more a flair for showmanship than myself.
She shared a video of herself peeing on a flag.
Five years from now you'll be able to google her name and find this. It's stupid. It jeopardizes your future and your opportunities.
That doesn't even touch on the political or respect aspects of the whole thing.
Yes. She peed on a piece of fabrick in disagreement with her country while exercising her fredom of speech. I don't see why that makes her an idiot
Like others have said, desecrating the flag is okay as it demonstrates a broad spectrum of feelings towards a government. I just don't believe this was a good course of action to protest by. Urinating onto the flag shows barbarism of the offender. Instead of getting the original message across, it instead portrays an act of vulgarity.
I know patriotism is a concept that escapes most the people on Facepunch but the flag happens to represent a lot.
She is a patriot for using her rights of free speech.
How patriotic is it to want to deny her that constitutional right?
