"We got to have money' Disney Confirms Standalone ‘Star Wars’ Films In Between Episodes 7-9
From one recently-acquired film franchise to another, Disney is generating buzz and hype like we’ve never seen before. Their acquisition of Marvel Entertainment in 2009 resulted in last summer’s record-breaking The Avengers and in October they acquired Lucasfilm with the hope of replicating the success by launching another Star Wars trilogy, beginning with Episode 7 in 2015.
On the Marvel side, there are six films that have official release dates over the next three years, with a seventh confirmed for sometime after that. Major rumors on Super Bowl Sunday detailed potential plans for another two (see: Planet Hulk). For Star Wars however, which now has J.J. Abrams attached to direct the first installment, Episode 7 is one chapter in a big unfolding book over a six-year period.
Disney CEO Bob Iger appeared live on CNBC today as the company shared their quarterly earnings. Not only was Iger able to proudly report higher-than-expected earnings, but he was able to force push another wave of Star Wars buzz throughout Wall Street and Hollywood.
Over a six-year period means Star Wars Episode 8 will likely release in 2018 and Star Wars Episode 9 in 2021, with additional films in between. There could very well be at least one Star Wars movie per year depending on the resources and production capacity of Lucasfilm. However, Entertainment Weekly reported previously that Kennedy told the Lucasfilm staff that they will be ramping up for producing 2-3 films per year, meaning they very well may be embracing the Marvel cinematic universe strategy.
The timing of this confirmation lends credence to AICN’s scoop last night that the first standalone movie Lucasfilm and Kennedy are working on is a film about Yoda. Yoda of course, is part of the saga, but we don’t know if Iger’s use of the word is in reference to the saga as a whole or if he’s specifically referring to characters no longer alive post-Return of the Jedi.
If by “characters that are not part of the overall saga” refers to Episodes 1-9, then we could very well eventually see standalone features based on some of the more popular pieces of the Star Wars expanded universe. Could stories from the novels, comics or games finally get the big screen treatment? Are Knights of the Old Republic and Shadows of the Empire real possibilities? Boba Fett solo film?
Star Wars Episode 7 will hit theaters in summer 2015.
Jokes aside, I would really like to see how these films turn out.
A younger Yoda leading an army sounds interesting, but quite unfitting for his character.
boba fett solo film is all i want
please
Star Wars is going to be ruined for all eternity.
Disney now knows that good fan service + new ideas = big bucks, so I would be surprised if these were bad.

Because the prequels didn't already do that?
Star Wars is going to be ruined for all eternity.
As long as George Lucas has minimal impact on the script, production, and directing, I think these movies may turn out to be fairly good.

Hey hey, I wouldn't mind seeing a movie based off of Shadows of the Empire.
Star Wars Origin: Boba Fett Christmas Special.
Shadows of the Empire, Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, Thrawn Trilogy, Yuuzhan Vong war for the main movies.
Before you complain on how Star Wars is ruined forever, remember Disney is one of the main players behind the Marvel Studios movies. So they're the ones that gave us Avengers. And Avengers 2. And Ant Man. And Doctor Strange. And Captain America 2. And Thor 2. And Iron Man 3.
Yeah. Think about that. All those movies you want to see? Because of Disney. Now stop complaining like a rabid fanboy.
Shadows of the Empire, Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, Thrawn Trilogy, Yuuzhan Vong war for retconning
And Thor and Captain America... which weren't good. Thor was better than CA but imo both sucked some pretty big balls.
oh god dammit

leave yoda alone he's supposed to be mysterious you fuckers

Didn't Lucas sell the rights to Disney?
In other words, he has absolutely no say on what happens with the franchise?

I'd trust Disney with Star Wars way more than I'd trust Lucas.
Hell I'd trust anyone before Lucas.
yoda is a purely utilitarian character in the original trilogy. for all intents and purposes he has no backstory, because a coherent backstory would ruin the intrigue of his character and bog it down with shit no one on earth cares about except wookiepedia editors. the prequels bungled this enough as it is
Personally I've been really optimistic with Star Wars in Disney's hands. I know it's been said a lot but the success with The Avengers and the long term plans for the Marvel Cinematic Universe make it look impossible for them to screw this up. If they want to make more money with more films then they know they have to make a fantastic product to satisfy the rabid Star Wars audience. I'm excited to see that happen, don't know about anyone else.

I'm pumped for those movies BUT I'm a firm believer that those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

I've seen what happens when disney stretch a series for the sake of making money.
So I'm on the fence about this.

We do know part of Yoda's backstory. We know that he was once of the Master of Count Dooku before he went to the Dark Side

If I recall correctly, Disney has stated that no expanded universe books will be turned into movies; all movies made will have original ideas and themes.
No Shadows. No Thrawn. No galaxy being invaded by the Vong.
I'm excited for sure, but remember Shrek and The Land Before Time?
I just hope that Star Wars doesn't befall a similar fate.

It will eventually.
Maybe not the first two or three films.
But with one movie every 1-2 years? They're bound to get shitty fast.

A film about the Jedi Civil War or Mandalorian War from the KoTOR games would be amazing

but on stranger tides was great
minus the preacher/mermaid love story, but they only got like 10 minutes screentime anyway

Reading wookiepedia is actually interesting as fuck, yoda's article in particular. There's way more to Star Wars than the movies.

wookiepedia's great when you want to kill an afternoon reading all the stuff they've come up with in the expanded universe but i try to keep that stuff separate from the movies cause it kind of just muddles it up imo. EU has some great stuff but i look at it as sort of a different thing

What Disney says isn't followed upon. They are going to steal ideas from the EU if they hope to do a movie per year for Star Wars. Hopefully they throw away the trashy ones like the Clone Wars, super weapon spam, overpowered force users, and Sith/Jedi war stories.
I would totally kiss ass if they did an adaption of Freedon Nadd's story
