Prisoners riot in maximum security prison in Melbourne
Heavily armed police carrying shields have been called in to help quell a riot at Melbourne's maximum security prison, the Metropolitan Remand Centre in Ravenhall.
Police at the scene said about 300 prisoners were involved in a demonstration which began at 12:20pm inside the prison.
Shots were heard coming from the facility just before 6:00pm but it was unclear whether it was tear gas being used or gunfire. Barking dogs were also heard.
Images from inside the prison show inmates with their faces covered, carrying sticks, bashing doors and windows, and lighting fires.
A drone was sent up to monitor the yard, with a police helicopter and a heavily armoured vehicle also on the scene.
Dozens of police officers were seen marching through the main entrance of the prison with riot gear.

She said the riot may have been related to a state-wide smoking ban in Victorian prisons, which is due to begin tomorrow, but said that had not yet been confirmed.
I would not be surprised at all if the smoking bad was the cause.
Smoking is like the only thing prisoners have.
Smoking is like the only thing prisoners have.
It's been pretty stupid recently. The various state governments have been banning smoking in every government institution. Hospitals will no longer allow patients to go outside for a smoke for example. This apparently has caused problem in mental health wards.

and it gives all the non smokers and the staff cancer
and it gives all the non smokers and the staff cancer
but at the same time it's one of the few things that makes nearly all prisoners and a lot of guards happy.
and it gives all the non smokers and the staff cancer
Oh please, it's done outside. Prisoners and staff can easily walk away from it.
and it gives all the non smokers and the staff cancer
I imagine you could have a smoking area...
"If criminal acts have occurred within the prison today that would be up to Victoria Police to pursue any charges."
A maximum security prison would probably be populated by lifers anyway right?

Straight up if you work in a prison your risk of cancer is way way higher than if you don't. Let alone the prisoners who are there all the time.
If you think they don't smoke in their cells/outside allowed areas you are delusional. Theres no prison where there are enough COs to enforce 100% of the rules 100% as written.

Not neccessarilly. Long sentences or people whove done stuff in lower levels and can't be trusted.
and it gives all the non smokers and the staff cancer
No it doesn't.
The amount of second hand smoke you'd have to consume to even have a 1% chance of developing cancer as a causal relationship is ridiculous.
Second hand smoke is mostly vapor

http://www.cato.org/publications/commentary/secondhand-smoke-charade
The myth of "dangerous" second hand smoking is propaganda based on epidemiological junk science that has been used to push through more taxation and fines.
Actually, it is.
The body of knowledge saying it does cause cancer is way way way way larger than it doesn't. They just did a study in Australian prisons not that long ago that showed that it does. You don't think that if second hand smoke was OK the companies that spent decades hiding the fact cigarettes cause cancer at all would be all over that? Which they aren't?

Its still annoying to non-smokers.

Also horribly unhealthy and a cancer risk. Breathing in one smoke while walking past a bar Vs breathing in that shit everyday, being surrounded by it, etc.
They actually had prisoners to openly admitted to researchers that they stuffed smokes up their bum and smoked them in their rooms with prison lighters. The cells in max are very close together, in lower security you even bunk with people in cubes. Close proximity to several smokes day and night for years = cancer.
Mace and taze the fuck out of them and throw em back in there cells to rot and extend their sentences.
These people are in prison, they don't deserve the pleasure of a smoke.

you don't understand the purpose of prisons

Hating criminals is one thing but considering the fact that many people within that prison may be completely innocent...
I just really can't get behind this idea of prison being intended to be a rape infested hellhole full of violence and nothing fun.
you don't understand the purpose of prisons
The purpose of a prison is to show prisoners the difference between right and wrong, to rehabilitate someone, negative reinforcement of "Mace and taze the fuck out of them and throw em back in there cells to rot and extend their sentences." may be a bit extreme but what can you do to these people? they don't understand a prison sentence obviously.

No one said rape infested hellhole full of violence.

You don't rehabilitate by taking away everything someone has.
You don't rehabilitate by taking away everything someone has.
Just only their freedom? and smoking is a drug that plays with peoples behaviours, not exactly a good idea when trying to rehabilitate.

Making them hate you more than they already do is probably not a good idea on the path to rehab. Perfectly sane and law-abiding people would probably also break if forced to give up their nasty habit.

God forbid the guy serving a life sentence gets cancer :v:
The fact is happens in max means that it 100% guaranteed happens way more frequently in say minimum

So what do you think they should do? let the inmates shove ciggies up their assholes and infest their cells with second hand shit smoke for the other fellow in their cell to be forced to breathe in that shit?
They have to put an end to it one way or another.
The fact is happens in max means that it 100% guaranteed happens way more frequently in say minimum
Wouldnt it be the other way around.

Separate someone from the rest of society, take away their freedom and their prospects and everything they enjoy, make it really hard for them to find legitimate work after leaving, put them in the same environment as murderers drug dealers, rapists, etc. tell them they're worthless every single day, take away everything they enjoy, make it hard to communicate with their friends, their family, etc. etc. etc. and even innocent people will turn to a life of crime when leaving prison.
It's not rehabilitation, it's just punishment.

What do you honestly think is ideal for rehabilitation? a murderer being forced to get counselling once a week?
What do you honestly think is ideal for rehabilitation? a murderer being forced to get counselling once a week?
psychiatric treatment would probably be the most ideal way

Which is good for some (murderers, rapists, armed robbers, etc.)
The real problem is that theft, fraud, prostitution, "hacking" and even downloading an album off DC++ can get you in the same place.
Individuals who only do such crimes do not represent an actual danger to society and will only develop more hatred and skill (crafting shanks/shivs, quick killing, evidence disposal, bribery, smuggling, etc.) which carries on after they're released.
But, naturally, everyone's equal in the eyes of justice (unless money is involved) and this happens.

Aside from that not being the point of a prison, you have a lot of faith in your judicial system to insure that only truly rotten criminals get sentenced. Nobody has every been innocent, nobody has ever been framed, no cop has ever made anything up, and nobody who has committed crime in the eyes of the law was ever just in doing so.

Hospitals probably shouldn't be allowing people to smoke, but if they're going to ban it outright they should be responsible for providing smoking cessation aids and help for people to quit.
Same thing for prisons imo. Banning smoking is fine if they're willing to provide people with the gum/patches and have stop-smoking programs.

What's up with crime in Australia? Not trying to offend you Aussies, but I've heard of tons and tons of stories of violent murders involving the killings of hitchhikers and tons of horrific shootings. Don't get me wrong, this stuff happens in the U.S. and Canada too, but wow it seems like a serious issue in Australia more then anything else, correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh yeah, and don't forget this:

Horrifyingly awful. Jesus christ...
