Carlos Slim, the Mexican telecom tycoon worth over $80 billion, believes life would be better with a three-day work week.
"You should have more time for you during all of your life -- not when you're 65 and retired," Slim told CNNMoney's Christine Romans on Tuesday.
But if Slim had his way, people would also work longer days and much later in life. He suggested 11-hour shifts and pushing the retirement age to 75.
Slim raised eyebrows over the summer by calling for a three-day work week, but he doubled down on that proposal on Tuesday.
"I am sure it will happen," the 74-year-old told CNNMoney, though he conceded he's not sure when.
While "machines should work 24 hours and services should work as much as possible," Slim said people deserve more time for entertainment, family and to train for better jobs.
He also believes the radical change would give younger workers more opportunity to enter the workforce and be a positive for the economy and financial markets.
"It's a society of knowledge and experience. You have better experience and knowledge when you are 60, 65 and 70," Slim said.
The $83 billion man: It's an interesting idea considering the source: a self-made billionaire who Forbes estimates is worth about $83 billion. Slim has been alternating the crown for the world's richest man with Microsof (MSFT, Tech30)founder Bill Gates, whose wealth is valued at nearly $81 billion.
Slim got into investing before he even entered high school, buying his first bond at just 12 years old and stocks a year or two later.
I wouldn't mind an 11 hour shift, I've done them before. But not retiring until 75 sounds a bit much; just because we live longer doesn't mean we get any less frail later in life.
I work 11 hour days four days a week (1hr lunch break a day), seems to make a bit more sense than five 9 hour shifts (with 1hr breaks), it's an hour earlier and later than usual, essentially I just miss the traffic rush both times of the day.
could use a bit of tweaking such as lower retirement age but i can't say i disagree with him

But if this is used across the board in businesses, then you end up with those rush hours moved to fit the 11 hour shifts.
My dad "works" 4-day weeks, 12-hour shifts.
The reason the "works" is in quotations is because the paper mill my dad works at is severely understaffed and the management are absolutely incompetent.
What he ends up working is 7-9 days straight, 12-hour shifts, one day off to basically just sleep, and then going right back to the grindstone. The only time he actually gets his four-on-four-off is when everything is actually running correctly - and seeing as the majority of the equipment being used in the mill are from the 70s, and the management's solution to things breaking is duct-tape and spot-welding, it's very rare that nothing goes wrong, invoking overtime and calling people in on their days off.
I'm naturally hesitant of these sorts of work schedules because reality rarely lines up with plans. Admittedly this varies wildly depending on industry and individual companies, but I think you could say that living with my father basically being enslaved to the work-eat-sleep cycle for the better part of my life has given me some bias against the idea.
I work three twelve hour shifts and having 4 days off is pretty rad
Fuck off, Carlos, you puppeteering fucknugget. You got rich by lining the pockets of corrupt politicians (and Mexican Presidents!) and making them privatize telecommunications and placing you in charge. Fucking cunt is the richest man in the world by being a fucking puppet-master cunt
I fucking hate Carlos Slim and what he's done to Mexico
-snip-
This seems like a pipe dream...
It can't happen.

That's the norm. You have to climb the ladder of power and most people do it via bribery.
3 day work weeks with an 11 hour shift seems fair.
I'm curious how having a raised retirement age would effect an economy - I would wager that it would have negative effects for young adults.
Live expectancy in Mexico is 77.2 years. Retirement at 75 is ridiculous, you work until you die.

On the other hand, lower unemployment and you only have to deal with the rush hour traffic 3 days a week.

Maybe SS tax will drop a little at least
[sp]Pfft, whom am I kidding, taxes never drop[/sp]
But you'd have to make up for the loss in hours with more pay which would cause inflation. Either that or people are expected to work even•more jobs•to make what they make now.
Retirement till 75?
I am GLAD I'm not in Mexico...
Here, we already got the age pushed up to 65, which is a lot for people like my dad who's worked since he was 14 or something, if the rat bastards at the government do the same this fucker wants, we are all fucked.
And 11 hour shifts are awful unless you have a cozy job. If you do factory work, have fun having a mental breakdown (possibly before your body starts going sore from everything else), unless you're made of Terminators and were conceived only to work.

I would imagine breaks would be involved. It's not 11 hours straight of work.

30 minute breaks, yay, that will sure help for the next 5.5 hours.
And you get to repeat it the next days!
And another thing this guy is forgetting is how people actually have lives outside of work. As in theres still people who have to come home and do chores, like cleaning, food, shower, and all that stuff.
Seems like what he's doing is just making things more extreme. "You already don't have all that much time a-day for anything but work? Here, have even less!"
How the fuck does someone over 65 even get employed? Imagine being that retarded that you believe that elderly people can hold down jobs to sustain themselves that late in life

Did you miss the "only work for 3 days out of the week" part?

Greeter at Walmart :v:
The way the world is going, there's not enough jobs around for everyone to have a job, automation, robotics and administration improvements means in alot of cases the human component is no longer necessary. However to accomplish that Capitalism needs to be replaced or redesigned to make up for this factor. It would most likely mean this guy and other insanely rich would have to get off their high-horses and share the wealth, something they would not do willingly.
Oh man I'd be shitfaced all the time

For every machine built to work 24/7, there's a new mechanic and technician job opening to keep it running and repaired.
At the rate the world is going we'll have standard work days on saturday and retirement at 80. This guy is fucking demented if he thinks the companies and factories are going to make us work less then they are now.

Yeah, well, you don't usually bribe the President

We're not working less, we're just grouping hours worked more together.
Would you rather work 4 hours 7 days a week or just 3 days a week at 11 hours?
To me, even if I have to work just 4 hours in a day, the whole day is ruined because you have to spend time getting ready for work, leaving, etc. I only go out on days I have off, even if a work day has me out by noon time.

The IRS would get less money in theory, at 70.5 you are required by law to take out money from your 401k that they collect taxes on. So raising it would mean people waiting until later to take money out.
Seems pretty fair to me if you get paid the same amount, i do 5 days of 10 hours and wouldn't mind at all doing an hour extra every day to get two days off.

My father manages a NTB location, and upper management is such a joke that nobody wants to work for them. hes always understaffed and half of the time the staff he has is dumb as shit. He worked 28 days in a row almost 14 hours each shift. whats even worse is that he is payed on a salary, so it doesnt matter how many hours he puts in, he always gets the same amount.
