Oh wow. Everything is tiny, and those lightning storms!
Looks so surreal, it's awesome.
What's that green stuff in the atmosphere? I am not very knowledgeable about this sort of thing, does anyone know?
Are you referring to the "dancing" lights? That's the aurora borealis.
Really awesome, would love to see that for myself.
it really shows how people have made such an impact on Earth
What's that green stuff in the atmosphere? I am not very knowledgeable about this sort of thing, does anyone know?
As ccg said, that's the aurora. The Sun is constantly spewing out charged particles, (electrons and protons) and the Earth's magnetic field channels them towards the poles where they hit the upper atmosphere, ionising the air molecules. The molecules then release the energy they gained from the charged particle collision as light. Each gas has a unique colour. The green is emitted from oxygen, any red or blue emissions come from nitrogen.
I like to refer to them as the Northern Lights
That's what everyone here in Norway calls them.
But you can't use Northern lights as a general term because they happen at the South Pole too :v: The ISS orbits pole to pole so so it's probably both the Northern and Southern lights in the video.
I love this video, but what's up with the music? It sounds like my speakers are melting.
dat magnetosphere
It's making love to my eyes.
More amazing space footage. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=10c_1317220703
