A 76-year-old British author on Friday lost his appeal against a six-week jail term and fine for insulting Singapore's judiciary in a book about criminal executions in the city-state. Alan Shadrake, a freelance journalist and author of "Once A Jolly Hangman: Singapore Justice in the Dock", joked and laughed with reporters outside the court after the judgement was read. "I expected the decision. I am very sorry for Singapore. I'm not sorry for myself," he said. Shadrake will undergo a medical test before he starts his jail term on Wednesday. He had been out on bail while seeking to reverse a High Court ruling in November that sentenced him to prison and a fine of Sg$20,000 ($16,150) for insulting the judiciary. "We affirm the sentence imposed by the judge," said Justice Andrew Phang of the three-member Court of Appeal panel. There was no immediate comment from the British embassy. When he launched his appeal, Shadrake defiantly described the charges as "bloody nonsense" and said he was ready to go to jail. Shadrake's jail term was the stiffest sentence ever imposed in Singapore for the offence and was denounced by international human rights groups campaigning for an end to executions and for greater freedom of expression in the country. Shadrake said last week that the second edition of his book was already on sale in Australia and due to be launched in Britain on June 1. His book includes a profile of Darshan Singh, the former chief executioner at Singapore's Changi Prison who, according to the author, hanged around 1,000 men and women including foreigners from 1959 until he retired in 2006. The book also features interviews with human rights activists, lawyers and former police officers, and alleges that some cases involving foreigners may have been influenced by diplomatic and trade considerations. Shadrake was arrested by Singapore police in July while visiting the city to launch his book, which was first published in neighbouring Malaysia. -snip- Wow I didn't read that. How terrible.

I guess you could say he was booked.

my country :eng99:
Singapore had a reputation as a fairly nice place to live in. Not anymore, I guess.
I love how so few countries have freedom of speech and expression anymore.
I can understand if the book is racist or insulting people's religion but what I don't understand is why or how could they jail this guy over his opinion about the way the government rule? I'm a Singaporean and there are some things that you should never say openly here in Singapore. Insulting Singapore's judiciary system openly in a non-anonymous way could get you into trouble.
Singapore needs to loosen it's laws, they have a $200 fine for littering iirc and a death penalty for alot of crimes which don't deserve it.
Singapore had a reputation as a fairly nice place to live in. Not anymore, I guess.
Singapore is a nice place to live in, follow the law and don't criticise the government and you'll be fine. They have strict rules but that's also one of the reasons why there's almost no crime there.

Or is that not what you're saying?
Singapore needs to loosen it's laws, they have a $200 fine for littering iirc and a death penalty for alot of crimes which don't deserve it.
This is what happens when corruption is prevalent.

Y'know, all this imprisonment over fascist laws should be enough to warrant the UN to drop some heavy sanctions on to Singapore, made them stop being the fascisti. Burn the corrupt, or if that isn't good, forcibly re-educate and medicate the corrupt.
Wow they really threw the book at him.

Hey Singapore, you suck. Come at me.

Bloody useless bunch of diplomats
Any government that passes laws that forbid criticising them should be swiftly removed from power.
And none of us protest. Ever. The last protest was in the sixties.
why there's almost no crime there.
lowest crime rate reported looking at their corruption rate it's no wonder
Oh yeah, we have the highest paid ministers in the world. Our Prime Minister gets paid 3 million a year.
Hey Singapore, you suck. Come at me.
That won't get your jailed, but insulting the legal system/courts will. The law is very sensitive about that.
So if someone wrote a book glorifying racism and got thrown in prison, you'd be fine with that? Or is that not what you're saying?
We could jail an author for making a Book that glorify racism with obvious intention of causing hatred and distress. Nobody likes racism and religious hatred here. We shouldn't be jailing an author just because he made a Book that insulted the government base on his or her personal opinion.
