An 88-year-old World War II veteran cited for a code violation for the condition of his Kansas office building recently found himself in jail after being charged with contempt of court. Kenneth Knudson, owner of Knudson Jewelry in Horton, was ordered to spend one night in jail after failing to come up with a plan to fix a portion of his downtown building, which has a cracked exterior wall and missing bricks, Fox4KC.com reported.
Knudson, whose story went viral on social media after it was published Monday, said he appeared in court on Dec. 23 and told a municipal judge that he did not have the money to fix the building. He told the station he was fined $100 and put in jail.
What bullshit.
If he can't afford to fix the building, how is he going to pay the fine geniuses.

I'm guessing that fixing a portion of a building costs a tiny bit more than $100. Genius.

taking 100$ is definitely going to help him get the money to repair the building

$100 that could and should be going towards the costs of repair. Genius.
So how do you propose the law be enforced in this case? Ignore the fact that he's a veteran, I really don't see how that plays here, except on the heart strings.

well thats pretty much just it. Dood fought for our country in the largest war ever fought and 70 years later he's being harassed by something he can't do anything about. People are helping with the repairs now though.

So, if it was anyone else, it wouldn't matter that they couldn't pay? You know why Lady Justice wears a blindfold? I'll quote Wikipedia here:
"[...]and a blindfold indicating that justice is or should be meted out objectively, without fear or favor, regardless of power, money, wealth, or identity."

yeah no fucking shit. I'm not saying the dood should be treated any differently because of his age or prior service. I'm just saying the situation fucking sucks balls because of his age and prior service.

You're contradicting yourself here, you're saying "he shouldn't get special treatment based on his status, but it sucks that he's not getting special treatment based on his status".

No fucking shit what? First you leaned one way and now the opposite?!
$100 that could and should be going towards the costs of repair. Genius.
Its a negligible amount considering what he probably has to pay for repairs. Einstein.

No, I'm saying he shouldn't get special treatment but it sucks whats happening to him is happening to him. It's not that hard to understand.
$100 that could and should be going towards the costs of repair. Genius.
Imagine if a large corporation had a construction violation that could potentially put peoples lives at risk.
Its a negligible amount considering what he probably has to pay for repairs. Einstein.
doesnt matter that money could have at least bought 3.5 grams of coke, genious
Imagine if a large corporation had a construction violation that could potentially put peoples lives at risk.
then they could take a few thousand dollars from their millions in surplus to fix it. You can't compare a small business to a corporation.
Imagine if a large corporation had a construction violation that could potentially put peoples lives at risk.
But it isn't.
dumb heartstrings story. buildings dont just rot away and lose bricks and crack overnight
the fine is a punishment. if you don't look after a building you own then that's what happens. obviously the building must be a fairly sizable risk to the public or else this situation wouldn't have occurred
it isn't a case of a poor old vet not having enough money to fix a building that has suddenly and inexplicably become dangerously damaged, it's the case of a person letting their building decay to the point where it has become a risk to people and they haven't done anything about it
big whoop
then they could take a few thousand dollars from their millions in surplus to fix it. You can't compare a small business to a corporation.
millions in surplus???
The US government?!?!?!?
are you daft?
Take note of the fact that he wasn't jailed for the fine. He was jailed for contempt of the court.
But it isn't.
I don't understand.
taking 100$ is definitely going to help him get the money to repair the building
If you can't afford to run your business, you're supposed to sell it, not let it run you into debt.
