"Airstrikes are not going to win this conflict," said Chambliss. "Ultimately, they're going to have to be boots on the ground." Just who will provide those boots, says Chambliss, is "the next step" in this conflict.
http://thelead.blogs.cnn.com/2014/09/24/sen-chambliss-airstrikes-are-not-going-to-win-this-conflict/ http://thelead.blogs.cnn.com/2014/09/24/roundtable-more-u-s-ground-troops-likely/
(CNN) – Lawmakers and military analysts have said boots on the ground will be necessary to defeat ISIS. But the United States' Arab coalition allies are reluctant to put boots on the ground, so will the task ultimately fall to the U.S.? "We need to be a little more clear about what U.S. troop presence we're talking about – advisers, special operators – it's not zero boots on the ground," said CNN political commentator Jay Carney. --- Obama is "going to get dragged into eventually sending in the 20,000 troops to destroy ISIS," said Kristol.
http://thelead.blogs.cnn.com/2014/09/24/roundtable-more-u-s-ground-troops-likely/ The sources are mostly videos that go in depth on the subject, this is just snippets of the video summaries.
Is it wrong that I sort of do not oppose the idea of just getting U.S boots on the ground along with some of our allies to end this sooner rather then later?
Is it wrong that I sort of do not oppose the idea of just getting U.S boots on the ground along with some of our allies to end this sooner rather then later?
Every time we collectively go there it ends badly for everyone involved. This is a pretty big problem and ISIS are definitely too volatile to just ignore but boots on the ground could just lead us to another bloody and fruitless conflict.
called it.
Why bother when Kurdish, Syrian Army and Iraqi Army are already there and are benefiting from the airstrikes.
If we put boots on the ground ISIS will fuck us via media by executing troops and posting videos online. It'll be Vietnam 2.0. Really not worth it as it will hurt our morale tenfold.
Oh yes, I'm surprised. Did not see that coming!!
Just give air support to the Kurds, Iraq and Syria, let the Middle East deal with the Middle East for once.
Is it wrong that I sort of do not oppose the idea of just getting U.S boots on the ground along with some of our allies to end this sooner rather then later?
Yea, its very wrong. Anytime anyone touches anywhere in the middle east, they get dragged into a brutal and bloody conflict that can last up to a decade. The glory of war in this day and age is that we can wage it from the other side of the globe with drones and long range bombers. We're taking advantage of that and we need to keep it that way.
Is it wrong that I sort of do not oppose the idea of just getting U.S boots on the ground along with some of our allies to end this sooner rather then later?
How well has that worked every other time you've tried it?

I wouldnt even contemplate this if I didnt have a very solid and concrete exit strategy. Only US ground combat roles should be special forces.
Just give air support to the Kurds, Iraq and Syria, let the Middle East deal with the Middle East for once.
This so much. Everytime we send troops there it makes people hate us. Bin Laden himself said US presence in Saudi helped al Qaeda go from a group in pakistan to a global thing. We help Muslims to help them selves seems like the best way.
Why bother when Kurdish, Syrian Army and Iraqi Army are already there and are benefiting from the airstrikes.
Because those guys have had such success with a ground war against ISIS already.
Isn't boots on ground what indirectly made ISIL possible anyway?
Every time we collectively go there it ends badly for everyone involved. This is a pretty big problem and ISIS are definitely too volatile to just ignore but boots on the ground could just lead us to another bloody and fruitless conflict.
It's gonna be a bloody and fruitless conflict either way, because they'll remember that it was the US that bombed them and they'll go into hiding and start planning attacks or you put people in there to fight them, they'll remember it was the US and it's allies that bombed them and shot them, they'll go into hiding and plan terrorist attacks. We need to get in there, flatten them, rebuild the area and fuck off. The less we have to do with the Middle East the better because literally everything the West does in the area pisses a lot of people off one way or another, at least if you sit around and do nothing there'll be less reasons for future generations to get radicalised.
The question is, when are boots going on the ground?

come on nobody wants to go over there we just finished sending a bunch of boys home
My prediction: in a month or two from now, public support for another military intervention will grow and there will eventually be another coalition ground component fighting the IS. Over the course of the war the public's support will rapidly drop. Years later everyone will shout about how it was a huge mistake and that the government lied about everything.
I don't see it, people are in favour of doing something but I don't think anyone is willing to even entertain the idea of sending folk into another sandbox with some even more pissed off assholes.

My Prediction: IS overthrows the Syrian government, invades Kurdistan and takes over Baghdad a few months later. Nearby countries get invaded and support for boots on the ground skyrockets, then a terrorist attack occurs leading to a massive regional war that lasts proportional to the amount of action taken, while other arab/mideastern governments overgo violent revolutions and we have a successor ideology to Communism, in Islamism.

Can we stop saying "boots on the ground" please. I physically have to look away from the screen whenever I read or hear that phrase now. Seriously, I actually look away from the screen because of how much of a groaner it's become.
Just carpet bomb where ISIS is located, and when the everything is grinded to dust and glass, carpet bomb it some more.
Just carpet bomb where ISIS is located, and when the everything is grinded to dust and glass, carpet bomb it some more.
Yep there certainly aren't any innocent people anywhere close to IS soldiers. Nope, they all stand out in an empty field where our planes can just take them out easily with no casualties and no civilian deaths. It's that easy, why didn't the Iraqi, Syrian, US, British, or French militaries think of this already? You're Hannibal incarnate with these tactics.

Anyway we dropped more bombs on Vietnam then in Eastasia and Europe during WW2 and we still lost Vietnam. So carpet bombing isn't as effective as you think.
