PHOENIX — Arizona lawmakers give their first hearing Monday to a bill that challenges automatic U.S. citizenship for children of illegal immigrants, the state's latest foray into the national debate over illegal immigration.
The bill to be heard Monday by the Senate judiciary committee seeks a court interpretation on an element of the 14th Amendment, which guarantees citizenship to people born in the U.S. who are "subject to the jurisdiction" of this country.
Supporters of the bill the amendment doesn't apply to the children of illegal immigrants because such families don't owe sole allegiance to the U.S.
The bill's sponsors say the goal is to force a court to rule that a child born in the U.S. is a citizen only if either parent is a U.S. citizen or a legal immigrant. Similar proposals have been introduced by lawmakers in Indiana , Mississippi, Texas, Oklahoma and South Dakota.
Opponents of the bill — and constitutional scholars — predict such state efforts will be declared unconstitutional. Opponents say the proposal is mean-spirited toward immigrants and won't make a dent in the state's immigration woes.
Story: States seek to copy Arizona immigration law An accompanying proposal is an interstate compact that defines who is a U.S. citizen and asks states to issue separate birth certificates for those who are U.S. citizens and those who are not. Such a compact would have to be approved by Congress, but would not require the president's signature.
The proposal comes after Arizona last year enacted one of the nation's toughest local laws targeting illegal immigration. A federal judge put the most controversial parts of that law on hold.
In previous years, the state has passed laws denying government benefits to illegal immigrants, denying bail to immigrants arrested for serious crimes, and creating the state crime of immigration smuggling.

I'm not going to pick sides as an Arizonian myself, but I'm leaning for the side saying, you can't just have a child as soon as you jump, and declare your a citizen.

No you can't, idiot.
It's the child who gets the citizenship.

Either way... I stay neutral nor do I give two shits.
Innocent children should not be denied citizenship if they are born here. It's simple as that.
The 14th amendment was created because of slavery, It should be changed now since it is no longer pertinent.

It doesn't matter what an amendment was created for, it still has a use and is still a legitimate right.

Not too sound offensive, bud... But he does bring up a point. The 14th was created for Slavery, and has not regards to Illegal Immigration...

All amendments were created for different reasons, some of which are non-existent in our current society.

What it was created for is irrelevant. It states that if you are born on US soil, you are a citizen. End of.

so you're saying that it should be possible for someone to be born in america and have spent their entire lives in america, but not be an american?
so you're saying that it should be possible for someone to be born in america and have spent their entire lives in america, but not be an american?
I believe their going about it harshly, and anyone who has kept their shit clean should be allowed to stay as an American. Anyone who has done more damage then good should be tossed back over.

How would you intend to gauge "keeping shit clean" and "doing more damage than good"?
I believe their going about it harshly, and anyone who has kept their shit clean should be allowed to stay as an American. Anyone who has done more damage then good should be tossed back over.
so you're saying that it should be possible for someone to have their citizenship revoked (that is just as bad)
Have you done anything of severity? That should be the main question/research that should be done. I'm not taking petty shit like... Disturbing the peace, getting in a fight, or any of that crap. I'm talking the grounds of murder, drug running, anything which can actually be declared deadly.
Ignore the fact that people hop the border for a reason. (HINT: it involves the country being in a poor state)

did you ever think that, maybe, mexico would refuse to accept people who weren't born there? we can't just throw anyone we want over the border. that's now how things work. If they were born in American then they aren't mexican citizens and we can't just send them to mexico.
think things through dammit

For that you have an actual point... Sorry for not thinking about that.
The whole anchor babies thing is another Fox News legend, there isn't any factual evidence to show it's a problem. Parents aren't automatically granted citizenship, they still have to crawl through the same immigration program.
We should make the process to live in the USA a little wider if you get my drift, right now only a certain number of people can apply to live in the USA while working, not quite sure on the time limit but I'm thinking we should make that number a little bit larger.
Making it easier for the people who wish to get here legally.
For that you have an actual point... Sorry for not thinking about that.
The same is true of anyone that says "let's send 'em back where they belong" as well, since the country they intend to send the people back to may not be their birthplace and the other country in question may not want them.
Punishing someone because their parents did something illegal is not only wrong but unconstitutional
How about this compromise?
Anyone currently in and born in this country, therefore making them a citizen, can stay.
But no new takers.
How about this compromise?

That isn't a compromise at all.
Aren't you the bloke who wants to halt all immigration, legal as well?
If the logic is "You are denied citizenship due to the commision of a crime(your parents being here illegally)" then doesn't it make sense that if you are the one committing a crime then you forfeit citizenship if you already have it?
Saying it another way, how does it make sense to reject an innocent kid for citizenship, a kid who has done nothing illegal, but guys like Manson, Dahmer, McVeigh, etc all get to keep theirs till the day they die?
It's obvious this idea is motivated by racism, purely serving the purpose of keeping 'them' out.
What it was created for is irrelevant. It states that if you are born on US soil, you are a citizen. End of.
I agree with automatic citizenship but that statement was just retarded. "What it was created for is irrelevant. It states that if you are black, you can't marry a white person. End of."
I say let them. What the worst they could do? I mean really what harm would it be to allow them to stay in the country they were born in?
That isn't a compromise at all.

No. Immigration is fine. It's a cornerstone of our society. It's the illegal immigration I want to stop.
And, I think the quota system is retarded. I like Canada's idea, where you have to be able to provide a needed skill or knowledge.
If you aren't a citizen of the country in which you are born, where are you a citizen?
