With all this internet drama going go, I think this is very relevant.
find myself agreeing completely with this dude
Damn, this guy is nice as fuck to listen to could listen to him for a good while.
Really good well laid out video, social media has just become fucking toxic in the last few years. I think Stephen Fry summed it up when he said too many people had peed in the pool and there just seems no plan on these sites to tackle it and that is if it is even viable to moderate that amount of content. I think at some point if we can't sort it out public social media is just going to become extremely unpopular as people are just going to get sick of it.
I've honestly never been a fan of social media. I see it as a place where people hide behind carefully constructed images they have crafted for themselves, and feel a sense of self-righteousness in forming a lynch mob to hunt down and spew hatred at people they've never met and don't know, for having an opinion that doesn't align with their own world view. You get these assholes who think its perfectly acceptable to publicly shame and threaten people they don't know in the kangaroo court of social media. All it takes is for someone to snap a picture of you and post it on Twitter with a description claiming you were saying something discriminatory. Next thing you know you're receiving death threats, you've lost your job, and some asshole has leaked your personal information all over the internet. The saddest part is there is such a disconnect when it comes to social media, that the people who go around doing this shit rarely get to face the consequences of their actions. For them it is a brief thing and then they're off getting pissed off at someone else. But for the person they've sent all this hatred towards, their lives are left in ruins.
With the title "The Internet Sucks" I thought this would be about the infrastructure. But no, the internet doesn't suck, it's the people who suck. We could also make the argument that phone lines suck, or letters suck, but the communication medium isn't the issue. The only reason most people behave and interact in a civilised manner is because they don't want to be rejected by the community. Once anonymity becomes an option, we start acting like the animals we are. Same thing happens with riots, crowds watching suicides and mass shoplifting.
There are some assholes here. Assholes on twitter. Assholes on Youtube. Assholes on Reddit. Really. Assholes everywhere.
Get a load of this asshole.

This phenomenon has already been given a name several times and yet the concept has mostly remained the same. What hasn't is that people are now creating flocks of lynch mobs under this effect which in itself is turning into an entirely new problem since the past few years. The Leafy, Keemstar, and other sorts of Youtube drama debacles you've seen it and now the recent backlash against James. It's really telling when you have real world comedians and even film directors trying to pull this shit off. I do wonder if there's a way to adjust the infrastructure of certain communication platforms on the net to be less susceptible to this toxicity. Pseudonymity and anonymity are pretty damn crucial to how most of the internet operates, but they're also catalysts for irresponsibility, leading to people shouting inane shit because they can get away with it or because the unrestrained venting feels so cathartic. But it seems difficult to create a communications platform with a significant account creation hurdle without turning it into some premium snob club or invite-only echochamber. Small, focused communities are generally pretty cozy because people actually know each other, and moderators and report systems can usually handle medium-sized platforms fairly well, but after a certain point there just doesn't seem to be any stopping the bullshit and the sheer size of the community makes people lose any sense of responsibility because their voice and actions are just a tiny drip of water in an ocean. I certainly hope the Internet isn't doomed to stay this way simply by design.
This may be nostalgia, but I don't remember Youtube being filled with this much drama a couple of years ago. (except for maybe viral videos like Chris Crocker.) Is it due to how big Youtube has gotten? There's a lot of influential Youtubers out there now with millions of subscribers. It created somewhat of a pack mentality.
Good video.
For some reason it seems like the audio isn't like, in-line with him speaking. I mean it's in sync with his mouth it just seems off. Anyone else?

It created somewhat of a pack mentality.
Youtube didn't have celebrities until pretty recently. Youtube, twitter, tumblr, (less so facebook and instagram) have all made it stupid easy to get an audience and start a witch hunt (even unintentionally) which snowballs with terrifying results. Also, algorithms which determine what users see have gotten so effective that they don't show them anything except what they specifically request, which blocks out different voices and reinforces their mindset. I think that changing this model would lessen this problem. Honestly, I truly believe that social media companies should do some censorship and management of what is fed to users. What may be the BEST single step is to remove or reduce the Echo Chambers of the internet. Reddit and tumblr in particular have major issues with this.
Although I don't have data to back this up but another thing that has changed lately is that people of all ages can be on the internet, especially kids (13 and younger). I've noticed gmod has gotten a lot of them and so as a mod creator (i used to be) you'll get a lot of nasty comments, often followed by threats for doing the smallest mistake. I personally just laugh it off cause they're kids being kids but I have a feeling not everyone realizes this. I think this extends to youtube comments and especially on gaming channels. This is different from political and social topics which is more serious than inane stuff like mod a vs mod b, xbox vs playstation, etc.
