The Independent and Independent on Sunday newspapers are to cease print editions in March, the owner has said.
Announcing a move to a "digital-only future", ESI Media said there would be "some redundancies among editorial employees".
But it said there would also be 25 new "digital-content roles".
ESI has also confirmed it will sell the i newspaper to Johnston Press, subject to approval from Johnston's shareholders.
Evgeny Lebedev, ESI's owner, said: "This decision preserves the Independent brand and allows us to continue to invest in the high-quality editorial content that is attracting more and more readers to our online platforms."
major newspapers over here are showing major losses in the paper field, everyone's gone to digital and getting their news from facebook, twitter, or a television news station
it was bound to happen but the implementation of digital subscriptions + paywalls will only deterrent people further
I don't even read the news, I'm doing fine with quick glances at headlines and imagining what they're about.
I didn't look at newspapers for about a year now and I feel a much better person for it.

Free Newspapers have existed alongside payed Newspapers for a while. Conservatives love paying for news.
What do you do when your industry that you have years of experience in collapses or mutates into something unrecognizable?
I reckon my grandparents won't be happy with news going digital.
usually the most important things to read are just right here. really dont know where else to get my news except CNN.
That's a shame. The Independent newspaper is good, but the website tends to have a lot of input from the left-wing which runs contrary to its centrist views.
