right, engineers/woodsmen etc.... i have a 500w rms sub. i have a homemade ported box and it's pretty loud. however i want it louder and i want a project for when i'm bored!

that's for a 15" driver. if I just knock 20% off all measurements will it fit together and work?
Got a load of 18mm marine ply that needs using.
[editline]19th May 2012[/editline]
I have got a 15" driver too but it's shite
Last time i checked, T line enclosures were designed for specific speaker characteristics other than size.
[editline]19th May 2012[/editline]
When i made a box for my 12" JBL i just used this calculator.
http://reaudio.com/box.php
It manages to rattle doors and all the plates in the kitchen.
yeah true, i don't have the specs or anything for this driver though. i just have some spare wood and time.
i decided against that design and i'm now going for this, a small folded horn cab designed for a 12" driver, might sound alright, might sound shit.

really don't understand hornresp either, i'm just gonna put that together and see what it sounds like.

It is coming along. Really wish I'd built the little section for the sub then screwed it in altogether
I know nothing when it comes to subwoofers other than they make the low frequency sounds that give my music that chest thumping bass, so can someone please explain to me why the sub cab is shaped so peculiar inside?
Not all subs are like this, this is a folded horn. The sound travels through the "horn" like a trumpet. As you can see the horn gets wider as it is projected round the box. This allows it to travel further and adds gain.

That's a straight horn. This is twisted round the inside of the cab to take up less room

There's a better ones than mine, imagine it with the side and a top

getting there. made a mess with glue. few dodgy screws i need to take out too.
this plywood is fucking impossible to sand, does anyone know any decent sandpaper?!!

just need a lid and finishing now!

couldn't be arsed sanding so just sprayed it black and it looks tatty as fuck. i might sand it properly one day but it's gonna get bashed about anyway so what's the point.

Go get some super 77. Spray it on there and then wrap black vinyl fabric around the whole thing. $20 max for materials.
I would but im shit at wrapping stuff. When i get a belt sander and some 40 grit I'll just go over the whole thing and roll some tuffcab paint on there.
Would you recommend stuffing the box? It's pretty boomy as it is, wouldn't mind it a bit tighter
What are you driving it with?
Gonna be a numark dimension 4 i think, 1900w at 4ohms

Or just coat it with truck bed liner as is, it will coat all the imperfections and make it look uniform.
As for stuffing it, no. The only way you'd get an effect with that is to stuff the actual box that the subwoofer is in. That would cut down your air space and keep it from sounding as sharp. It'd be different if this were a ported enclosure, but it's a horn utilizing only one side of the sub airspace to create output.
You also didn't stabilize the box as was indicated in the plans, which would also cut down on vibration.
When I make horn enclosures, I typically make the sound travel a lot further to keep it from sounding so harsh and "boomy" But this is a more compact box, so your options would be to turn the gain down on the amplifier and set the crossover somewhere under 100 and hope for the best.
What are you driving it with?
Yeah cheers, i have just screwed the top panel in with some silicone to reduce vibration, so can take the sub out to stuff it. Driving with a numark dimension 4 or a H/H MX900.
Where in the plans does it call for braces?
It doesn't vibrate at all, its just not that tight. Probably need a better driver

That said I've only got 50w going to it atm, should sound much better when i get my amp
A underpoered amp wlcause some uneccesary noise as well.
In the first drawingyou posted, the plans call for the top and bottom (in the drawing) walls to be doubled up, it looks like, which would help support the box latterally. It cals it a "hardwood edge batten" which would help stiffen the walls. Also MDF would've been a better material to begin with.
Yeah i built the second one, added a brace. First one is a scoop.
Looks like im getting the ep1500, 700w per channel. Should make it sing!
[editline]8th July 2012[/editline]
Mdf? Most plans call for 18mm marine ply which is what i used. Top quality and expensive.
I've been looking at building my own, You did a really nice job on this one!
Also I think I will just buy one :D.

I'd have used Fin Birch or aircraft ply if I was making it out of ply. I like mdf because it cuts vibrations, and makes a more uniform surface when yo are done. It's really all up to the builder.
It is European birch :)
I want to build a whole rig at somepoint for outdoor use, mdf doesn't like water

No wood does well with water, unless you're talking about initial swelling after building a boat. That is definitly a necessity. But yeah, mdf doesn't take well to it and the glue tends to come undone.
Looking good mate.. :)
cheers dude!
yeah a proper amp definitely tightened it up. sounds awesome! kicks are punchy as hell, misses the bottom end of the subbass though. gonna build another. and then a pair of 18's for the sub bass.
hey joe 588
nice build. could you give me dimensions for this cabinet height width and depth please.
savie

The drawing up top shows the exact dimensions...
dont know if im missing something here then but i can read height = 31.50" depth = 13.5" but nothing to say how wide the cabinet is. am i just being stupid or is it not on there?

It appears to be 31.5 high, and 13" square. So, 31.5x13x13.

Nice Terminals, where did you get them from
It appears to be 31.5 high, and 13" square. So, 31.5x13x13.
Hi I am new here, the name's Rane. I believe the dimensions are 13.5x13x13, if you look at the speaker baffle (given that it is a 12 inch) its clear to see that its a lot larger than 13x13, then there's the port area also. So after my calculations I believe the correct specs should be 31.5x19.67x19.67 hope this helps even though its about a year late lol
