As word has gotten out about how much different the game actually is versus what was sold by Sean Murray, refund requests on Steam have piled up in the thousands. This might explain why its sales have slowed down astronomically, and active playtime has dived more than 85% since launch.
It gets even more interesting when you look at how Steam is handling refunds in the case of No Man's Sky. Typically, Steam refunds are only granted when the user has logged two hours or less of playtime. Even then, Valve uses discretion to determine if a user is abusing the system with constant refund requests.
In the case of No Man's Sky, Valve is being unusually lenient. Dozens of PC gamers are reporting that they've been granted a refund despite having 9, 12, or even 13 hours of playtime logged on their account.

EDIT: People are saying some refund requests are being denied. If so, try explaining how the game's "multiplayer" was falsely advertised, don't just write "it sucks". It's also possible there is still a 2-week limit in place for refunds.

EDIT EDIT: Steam has put up a notice about refund requests on the main store page. Doesn't look like this will work anymore. http://store.steampowered.com/app/275850/
People keep saying that it's some kind of manufactured outrage because the game was "over-hyped" but the more I read about it the more it seems like it really is just false advertising. How so many people didn't see this coming given the circumstances and history of titles like these is kind of puzzling.
Yup, just got mine. I already tried a couple of days after launch but got denied; I tried again earlier today after reading about this and it worked. Really glad to get my not insignificant amount of money back.
So (without spoiling anything), could someone someone list the disappointments/lies that people keep talking about?
I'd like to say that, while normally I'm criticising valve for making incredibly poor decisions, this is an exception. I didn't buy the game, so none of this affects me, but I've seen numerous posts from people saying they logged too many hours by the time they decided they weren't happy with the results. I'm glad to see the consumer win, and I'm glad to see valve making that pro-consumer decision.
I've applied 3 times over the past few days including today and they've all been denied.
Welp, Hello Games have already made plenty of money off of PS4 users, and we can't get refunds. I wouldn't be surprised if they just take the money and run.

No planets as shown in the trailers.
Poor performance and memory leaks this far into release.
The whole multiplayer scandal.
No actual goal.
These are my own things I've found anyways.

Well the article mentions 13 hours as being the most they've seen somebody get a refund for, and you have 16 hours in the game. Plus you've owned it for over two weeks, which I think is the normal cutoff.
rip.
Steam too smart

I'm so glad that the 2 hour limit is not set in stone, it took me like 44 minutes to stop screwing around with the intro of We Happy Few and get into the completely boring and lifeless main game, which I basically did everything of interest in a couple of hours.
Seems like they are actually understanding with titles which do not have true representation, well at least regarding more popular games

This may actually contain spoilers, but there is too much to actually succinctly give you so...

Damn, I only played 1 hour and 55 minutes on launch day so I can refund it if I didn't like it and this happened.

Angry Joe did a really good review of this game and explains why it is such a disappointment.
A friend with 22 hours tried refunding it twice with no success, so i guess they do have a limit.
Unfortunately for me, I bought the game from their website, oh well, looks like I'm stuck with it.
People should learn not to buy a game beforehand or wait until the reviews from other users are already enough to draw a conclusion...
Come on, its 2016...ffs...

It's the current year. How dare people buy games about exploration before everything is explored and spoiled.
Everyone kept asking the question "What do you do in No Man's Sky?" and all of the answers from both the fanbase and the developers were either really vague or talked about some boring, uninspired feature(s) and gameplay aspects that have been done a gazillion times.
And when people asked "Why don't they show more about said feature(s)?"
The answer was always "They don't want to spoil the game ;)))"
This game seriously sounded like a scam, and hey look what happened.
As much as I like the game, I think I will just have to refund it and buy something else. It just looses its fun after a couple of hours.

I've got 47 hours and it said i could get a refund, i haven't though as i enjoy the game

i remember him mentioning players having the ability to greatly change planets (hence the sentinals being there to discourage this) even to destroy planets as well as fleet action or any meaningful interaction with NPCs.
from what i've seen its a highly generic (if very beautiful) game about going around finding random stuff on planets, selling random stuff on planets, flying to the station in each system, and flying around in general. Ships don't do anything other than give you more slots, planets can't have anything really done to them and theres no real interactions with factions
also the PC version is apparently not very well done
its OK, the game is great with what it does so far, but they should have been realistic about their marketing
So (without spoiling anything), could someone someone list the disappointments/lies that people keep talking about?
There's nothing to spoil anyways because there's barely any game.
Sloppy procedural generation, extremely grindy repetitive mechanics without any semblance of challenge or difficulty curve, no multiplayer, nothing that could be loosely construed as multiplayer, frequent crashes, memory leaks, staggering performance issues, and countless other disappointments.
It's easier to list the handful of things the game got right.
Not a surprise. Dude straight up lied about the multiplayer and gave wishy washy answers to everything else.
I know what happens when you reach the center of the galaxy, and it's so disappointing that if I were to tell you, you wouldn't even believe me
Here, I'll put it in tags in case you're curious
[sp]When you start the game, it loads, white screen with Initialize appears and bam, you're on a planet, suit initializing, your crashed ship beside you. The game starts. When you go to travel that one last jump to the center, it just zooms out across the galaxy. Spins 180 to another light source, zooms in on that, screen goes white and you initialize, on a planet, suit initializing, your crashed ship beside you. The game starts. That's it. No dialogue or anything[/sp]
deserved. i personally think it should get removed from steam all together. false advertising and blatant lying to sell your game is a huge douchebag move.
Damn I knew the game was a disappointment but I had no idea it was that bad.
Is there any good procedurally generated game out there besides Dwarf Fortress?

Honestly to me it seems less like false advertising and more about a first-time around the block indie developer who didn't understand what they could actually realistically do and thus ended up saying a lot of what they wanted to do, but couldn't implement in the time frame they had. If Sean Murray and Hello Games keeps doing this kind of shit, yeah, I'll agree that this was a case of false advertising, but considering the inexperience of the developer and the fact that they signed on with a publisher that I doubt wanted people's hype quelled by actual realistic talks of what they can do, I don't think it's that case just yet.
