Before Monday, André Weingarten figured he was out of luck. A devoted Xbox user from day one—he replaced two red-ringed 360s—Weingarten didn't have a preorder down for the newest console. Then, lo and behold, Target had them in stock online. And then, incredibly, Weingarten had an Xbox One on his doorstep four days later.

He played some Call of Duty: Ghosts. It's a 39-gigabyte installation, Weingarten said. Xbox One will let you play games as they're installing; Weingarten said Ghosts was playable at 51 percent of its installation. It took about 15 minutes to get that far.
that's kind of neat
He tweeted that he can't play Ghosts offline.

Seems like for offline play one the Xbox One (in Ghost's case) you need an active Gold account. What makes this weird is that the PS4 version actually has a little box saying offline play is allowed. Not sure who would think it was a good idea for no offline play on the Xbox One version of the game.
He better go Snowden before Microsoft tracks him down :tinfoil:
WHY is it so hard for distributors to read the timed instructions?
Someone at Target is about to lose everything for clearing that shipment.

maybe it's due to him having an early console or something? or maybe it's because of the ban?
i wouldn't jump to conclusions yet

See my edit, but yeah you're right I guess.

It's probably less that someone didn't read that stuff and more that they just didn't care

I want to see that fly when Target explains to Microsoft they broke a date seal early.
Microsoft could simply deny them the right to order or sell any more consoles once Target's current inventory is sold out.

Microsoft would be losing a large profit that way though, the company will punish the dude who caused the problem in order to appease Microsoft, more likely than not.

I don't think Microsoft is in any position to withhold orders from anyone.

tbh i think MS is doing the best thing they possibly can in this situation. they aren't suing him, they aren't forcing him to return the console, and it doesn't look like they're getting anyone fired. just a temp-ban that will be lifted sometime before the console releases, and that's it.

and he was invited to a launch event iirc

They did six hours (or thereabouts) after he got the console, if you read more than the two lines posted in the OP.

I bet they make a lovely couple
About the title, there was some kid who got his xbox one about a month ago

Microsoft. I think they saw the potential negative PR they were going to get. If this guy hadn't got his story in some high places I doubt Microsoft would've ever unbanned it. Why else would Big Man Major Nelson be personally talking to him
"They asked why I needed it already and I said, 'I got it early,'" Weingarten recounted. Jaws dropped and Weingarten trundled home to play a game only 100 or so people, worldwide, are enjoying right now.P
So that's how many people are enjoying Ghosts! I read that just as I wanted to read it
The tweet about no offline happened well after all the MS stuff happened.
Either the no offline is ban releated or the Xbox One version of the game lacks a proper offline mode. But we'll know for sure eventually, but again the whole PS4 box stating offline play is allowed is just weird.

He also tweeted that he couldn't even get to system settings after getting banned, which makes me think that it isn't that Ghosts is online-only, it's that he's fucking banned. Which makes a lot of sense when you think about it, now Microsoft's bans mean something (pretty much bricking your console) if you mod it or hack it, and that should discourage those kinds of people.

If a ban does effectively brick a console that is beyond stupid. It should just lock a profile out of accessing anything related to Xbox Live.

Is it? It doesn't sound stupid from a business standpoint. They could always have two kinds of bans, the ones that were normally given to people who misbehaved in the online community or whatever (locks you out of online) and a full-permissions bricking ban for special situations like this one or console modders.

It is unless there is solid proof of tampering with the system, which would be dificult to prove in some cases. A profile ban is fine and should have been applied to this guy. He got his console early, and was it his fault? Nope, it was Target's. Why is he getting punished for their mistake and gettting locked out of games he owns? Just don't let him play online until the official launch.
There are already Playstation 4s that people got early and are playing online. Sony isn't even bothering to ban those people since there is really no point. Why punish people for getting things early?
