I think they were looking for a reason to bust up a shitty looking memorial without saying it was shitty, and get a way to have the state back them up. I wouldn't blame them if that was the case.

I am surprised it happened in St. Petersburg. It's the gayest town in Russia (highest gay density of all towns) and it's the most western oriented one. Perhaps it's because "technical college". Tech guys here are rarely pro-gay rights to say the least. EDIT: The original russian source contains bits of an interview with the director of the "ZEUS" corporation that owns the college. Basically it sums up to "Snoden revealed that apple helped NSA spy on us. We want to make a point, we don't want USA to be so aggressive in their survivalence. The tech guys, economists, business people... In their amazingly vast majority are conservative when it comes to family values. Practically anyone who does something useful is what you call "homophobic". I say "what you call" because the majority doesn't hate gay people. The majority doesn't want gay parades and gay people calling for their recognition and all that, they just don't care about gays.
