The company that put it up gave two reasons for taking it down: Tim Cook is gay and Apple spies for the NSA.
How out of touch is Russia these days? Here’s a cultural data point:
Last Friday, one day after Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke publicly for the first time about his sexual orientation, a monument to honor Steve Jobs was removed from the grounds of a St. Petersburg technical college
It was a pretty bad looking memorial anyway.
I think they were looking for a reason to bust up a shitty looking memorial without saying it was shitty, and get a way to have the state back them up.
I wouldn't blame them if that was the case.
I am surprised it happened in St. Petersburg. It's the gayest town in Russia (highest gay density of all towns) and it's the most western oriented one.
Perhaps it's because "technical college". Tech guys here are rarely pro-gay rights to say the least.
EDIT:
The original russian source contains bits of an interview with the director of the "ZEUS" corporation that owns the college. Basically it sums up to "Snoden revealed that apple helped NSA spy on us. We want to make a point, we don't want USA to be so aggressive in their survivalence. Tim Cooks position could have played a role in that"
So it's mostly about spying, not about gay rights.

what
"because Tim Cook is gay and Apple spies for the NSA"
So will Russia want to ban all apple products now?
After all they could contain NSA spying technology/software.
(and Apple as a pro-gay company/brand might "recruit children to the homosexual agenda")

If that was the case they would've removed it ages ago.

Let me break it down for you.
The even occured at an IT college.
The vast majority of IT people here in Russia are males (no shit, I know).
The vast majority of males in Russia are homophobic or at least against gay pride and gay acceptance in any form.
Doing the math: the vast majority of students in a tech college are homophobic males.
Got it?
Russia is so homophobic it's ridiculous

That's surprising as a westerner
tech schools (and I suppose colleges in general really) in the US tend to be centers for social liberalism.

it gets worse towards the end

It's the oposite for us.
The tech guys, economists, business people... In their amazingly vast majority are conservative when it comes to family values. Practically anyone who does something useful is what you call "homophobic". I say "what you call" because the majority doesn't hate gay people. The majority doesn't want gay parades and gay people calling for their recognition and all that, they just don't care about gays. And most are against banning gays soviet-era style or not treating them like human beings.
We have our liberals, but they are usually artists, singers, pop stars, bloggers, poets. All that stuff.
This isn't even a whole story. Basically there's one russian deputy Milonov, who's utterly homophobic.

Once Tim Cook announced that he's gay, Milonov said that Apple's CEO should be barred from entry to Russia since gays can only bring Ebola, AIDS and gonorrhoea.
Two days later journalists asked Milonov why he still uses his iPad. Milonov stated that his gadget was made by straight Steve Jobs. Also iPad is like a "slave" for him therefore he doesn't care for his slave's sexual orientation.

To be fair, Steve Jobs was an awful person.
The guy forced his programmers to stay up 60 hours straight or he'd fire them. He enjoyed making divides in his company and watching them fight.
But taking it down because the new CEO is gay is retarded.

Haha. I like movies too.
Why'd they rip off Job's memorial if Cook's gay? :l

Steve Jobs by no means was a saint, not even close. He was not some horrible monster though

did you watch pirates of silicon valley and take it for 100% truth
That's a little ridiculous. Cook doesn't really have anything to do with Jobs, apart from having his old job.

Yeah sure, that's the ridiculous thing.
Now it would be only fair if they erect a new memorial of Tim Cook for Steve Jobs works.

pretty much a product of the uber-compeditive early 80s computer scene, bill gates was a bastard back then too, demanding tons out of his employees, sleeping under his desk, being very easy to anger, i remember watching something of him at microsoft in the mid 80s and he was mean, but thats how it was back then
I'm too used to the word "gay" being used by 10 year olds. I imagined the statement like this:
"Why did you take down the Steve Jobs memorial?"
"Tim Cook is gay lol"
Russia is such a fucking backwards country lmao.

Actually, it was 90 hours a week (And loving it!): http://www.folklore.org/StoryView.py?story=90_Hours_A_Week_And_Loving_It.txt
Even though it was true, I think everyone did it for the passion, not for being forced upon them.
My favourite Steve Jobs story however is the whole, "No fans, no vents" on the Apple III: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_III
The fix Apple suggested in a technical bulletin was to lift the Apple III off the desk until it was three inches in the air and then drop it, repeating the procedure until the symptoms disappeared. While the fix was quite effective, many purchasers found the process alarming.
Good ol' percussive maintenance
That's more Luke ZEUS self-PR.
Because this is the same person, who created this memorial in first place. Gotta stay relevant somehow, eh?

Unfortunately, no English news, but ITAR-TASS says it's because monument was broken, and was dismantled for touch screen repairment.
