I've always been curious about the history behind a lot of America's most famous eateries. Not the big franchises that we're all familiar with like McDonalds or Olive Garden, but the local places which got famous on their own merit with hard work and fantastic food. What makes these places so fantastic and why do they constantly bring in people from all over the country to eat there?

So I'm doing a little research for a possible future road trip to visit these little local eateries that are so fantastic and full of history and interesting stories. And while travel sites are good at giving insight, they can only give so much information. So I made this thread for you American Facepunchers to give your suggestions of local eateries in your area, city, or state, that you perhaps have visited before or have heard of.
I'm looking for some information behind them too, so if you could provide sites, pictures, or any kind of history behind them if you know it, it'd be fantastic. I'm going to be putting a lot of planning into this since it's kind of a far-off goal, but your input will definitely help me decide where to go on this cross-country adventure. If you have any interesting tourist stops in mind too, feel free to mention them.
So have at it. What are your favorite local eateries that you think are worth visiting on a cross-country road trip?

The Big Texan. Home of the free (if you can down it, and the rest of the meal in an hour) 72 oz. steak.

Travel Channel has a lot of shows about places like this. You'll probably see a lot of references to them. Actually as of right now, all three restaurants in this thread have been on the Travel Channel at least once.
If you pop in Pennsylvania, I greatly suggest Creekside (I tried to tiny URL the link but it didn't work)

They have delicious homemade french fries and on the weekends (if I remember right) you can order a "Trash Bash". They bring out a shitton of food all in a trashcan lid. Great if you're with several people. Plus it has a whole slew of deserts to get, like a "Pigs Dinner" which is basically a ton of ice cream with chocolate syrup, bananas, and cherry's and stuff. Like a huge sundae.
The inside is also filled to the brim with 50s-60s stuff, like original Beatles records, ads for old sodas, a train set, old Neon signs.

I liked Pink's because of the atmosphere. But the food was average although they do have very creative items. Also, the line is ridiculous even at 3 in the afternoon... :geno:

The fries are fried in lard and are "all you can eat" in a buffet style table. I was gonna go there when I was in AZ but no one else wanted to go. :frown:
I don't remember everything I watch on TV, so even if it is from that show, post it up anyway.
Which part of the country are you planning on going through?

Greatest hot dogs I've ever had in my entire life. I know the owners personally, and our families have been bros since at least the 40s. Apparently, their hot dogs are specially made, so you can't buy them anywhere else. They also serve burgers and pies (the dessert kind, not the pizza kind). It's a bit small (standing room only, if all 10 chairs are taken), but it's really cozy and really friendly.
The current record for most hot dogs eaten in one sitting there is 36. And no, the guy didn't die as soon as he finished.
