The British Government is helping bankroll a team of “rescue archaeologists” to lead efforts to save priceless artefacts in Iraq, Syria and Libya. Culture Secretary John Whittingdale will host a summit on the issue later this year and is setting up a cultural protection fund to underpin the action. After pressure from the British Museum among others, the UK is signing up to The Hague convention on the protection of cultural property in armed conflict. IS has deliberately demolished ancient mosques and destroyed treasures dating back to ancient Persia and Graeco-Roman times on the grounds that they “promote idolatry”. Curators from the UK will coordinate with counterparts in Iraq, Syria and Libya to identify items that could be rescued. They will also make digital recordings of ancient sites to assist restoration — or at the very least allow future generations to view their lost heritage. Mr Whittingdale said while the UK’s priority will continue to be the human cost of these conflicts, “I am in no doubt we must also do what we can to prevent any further cultural destruction. “The loss of a country’s heritage threatens its very identity.”
Are they taking resumes? How many field schools do they want? (Oh god take me with you please please please I need a job)
I'm imagining a cross between Solid Snake and Indiana Jones. Baller.
Ok, THAT is a video game concept that needs to happen. It could be a first-person stealth game like Thief, set in modern conflicts like the Gulf War and the current fight against ISIS, where the objective is not to kill all the "guards" but instead to gather and preserve as many artifacts as possible before they are destroyed or stolen by more opportunistic thieves. Hell, it could have a "war reporter" mechanic bundled in too, where you are rewarded for taking photos of the vistas of war and having interviews with various freedom fighters. Additionally, there would be a sort of internal conflict between helping people in the warzone and not interfering, where remaining a "ghost" may provide additional benefits from your employer, but saving a bunch of schoolkids from a roadside bomb would have a tangible effect in the world, both more immediate and with further-reaching implications. But either way, these rescue archaeologists sound totally awesome in their mission. [editline]21st June 2015[/editline] Also that Bulldozer of Fallujah scoundrel looks so much like a boss character that it isn't even funny. Here's hoping the archaeologists never have to face that mad brute.
