Economic insecurity is ‘new normal’, with only 30% saying they live comfortably There are now nearly 1 million people on zero-hour contracts and 1.7 million in temporary work. A record 4.8 million are self-employed, while there are an estimated 1.1 million people in Britain’s gig economy, which – in just five years – will equal the number of workers in NHS England. The report calls for new rights, responsibilities and a modern social contract based on support for people as they navigate changes to the cost of living, technology, and Britain’s international competitiveness. It says the government must explore universal childcare; pay for the self-employed to take maternity or paternity leave; devolve the “national living wage” to councils, and pioneer personal budgets for reskilling as the age of automation looms. oh hey look it's me thanks hilariously underpaid job + extremely expensive rent & living costs
Watch as nothing happens
Not surprised. Wages are shite and rents are too high. The reality is that most people are one or two payslips from ruin.
Cost of everything going up, an artificially inflated housing market and stagnant wages. What ever could go wrong.

Yup, living in London I could never move out with my GF, rent somewhere and having steady savings and we both work full time at reasonable jobs. I would have moved out years ago if rent was not such a draining POS. It just makes financial sense to stay living with our parents whilst we save. House prices don't help either, a 2 bed flat in a non-shit area that is not a shed starts at around £200-300k depending on what you want. We both wouldn't be able to get enough from a mortgage to get one so we have to save for a massive deposit along with getting help from parents to add on top of that.
Yup, working full time at the moment but I still life at home because quite frankly I can't afford to move about. I work for a supermarket and most jobs in other sectors like admin work pay less, thanks to Student Finance I can't afford to finish off my physics degree which got postponed due to health reasons, and thanks to the economy looking gloomy my employer has just culled the nigh on all the supervisor positions and a decent chunk of management positions so even promotion is highly unlikely. I'm not alone either. The bottom of the economic pile is a shit place to be, and it's growing. And surprisingly (/s) the current Tory government don't seem to have done a damn thing about it.
It's kind of humbling to see that, even overseas, the rich continue to take collective shits on working class people
According to the report, 32% of the UK’s workers have less than £500 in savings and 41% have less than £1,000. Almost 30% are concerned about their level of debt while 43% of workers do not have anyone in their household they could depend on to support them financially in the event of hardship. Fewer than half of employees (44%) feel they have progressed in their careers over the last five years; only 40% feel they have good opportunities to progress in future.
Jesus, and I've been panicking because I only have $4,000 in savings.
I work 35 hours and can only afford a room in a house share, renting out even a small 1 bedroom flat is almost entirely out of the question despite how badly I need some kind of space and independence.
