(CNN)A police officer has been shot Tuesday morning in Lake County, Illinois, authorities say, and there's a hunt on for multiple people suspected in the attack.
http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/01/us/illinois-police-officer-shot/index.html
Fox Lake police officer was shot and killed Tuesday morning, and a massive manhunt with dogs and helicopters was underway along Rollins Road in Lake County. The officer was on routine patrol and radioed shortly before 8 a.m. that he was going to check on some suspicious activity, Lake County sheriff’s spokesman Chris Covelli said during a news conference late in the morning. He then radioed that he was in a "foot pursuit" but communication was lost after that, Covelli said. Other units responded and found him shot at Route 12 and Sayton Road, he said. The officer was found in a marshy area, stripped of his gun and other gear, Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose. He died at the scene, the undersheriff said. Police have established a perimeter and are seeking one black male and two white males, Rose said. It's probably being covered live on your major TV News channels.
Damn, that's awful. Hope they're caught soon.
This happened probably 10-15 minutes travel from me. This is after a bomb threat on a McHenry school yesterday. The fuck is happening in my county?
Here we go again.
One suspect in custody
oh shit fox lake? that's like a 10 minute drive from me as well. that's insane
Would have never expected this in Fox Lake. Condolences to the officer's family.
CNN reported that one suspect was in custody but I guess they recanted
whoa lmao I edited bomber's post instead of replying. Hadn't heard they recanted yet, bugger obligatory "I live near there", my boss lives in that town and up until recently I was pretty much right next door to the area with dalndox
These guys must have been pretty desperate to evade capture.
I used to lifeguard at the nearby park district. Small world eh'
I was watching live when they announced that a suspect was in custody, then like thirty minutes later they started saying that all three suspects were still on the loose
this is rough from what I understand, traffic was all but locked down, even the metra wasn't allowed to enter/exit town for a while. There's (currently?) a 2 nautical mile no-fly zone around the city (why nautical though)
I live by Chicago and this is a little too close for comfort.
Is it just me, or have there (nationally) been a lot of police murder as of late? Also, I live nearby as well.
Holy shit. I live in Waukegan. Not only that, I know some people in the local law enforcement community. They're gonna be super pissed.
Is it just me, or have there (nationally) been a lot of police murder as of late? Also, I live nearby as well.
It definitely spiked in 2014 and 2015 from 2013. It's really depressing too, having a family member in law enforcement, to see news like this. Definitely makes you fear more than ever..

Lt was a close friend of a friend of mine.. Its weird seeing photos of him from 3 months ago with my friends to now being all over the news as the latest to die in the line. This is becoming a ridiculous amount of violence.
What the hell is happening to the U.S.? There's a shooting one week and another the next. :disgust:
What the hell is happening to the U.S.? There's a shooting one week and another the next. :disgust:
Because the news only shows this. Glorifies it, even. Hey, go shoot a bunch of cops, we'll make you famous. Go shoot up a school, get a 60 Minutes special, just about you.
Holy shit. I live in Waukegan.
poor guy
What the hell is happening to the U.S.? There's a shooting one week and another the next. :disgust:
There's shootings everyday. Chicago has dozens a week, sometimes hundreds.
Was US ever peaceful? As far as I know, there is always constant war. Could be wrong.
Was US ever peaceful? As far as I know, there is always constant war. Could be wrong.
No not really, it's been pretty steady actually. Technically it's been going down since we have more people and cops than we used to, but the physical number of deaths is steady dispute there being a larger population and more cops. There's also a spike around the early 1900's, climbing rapidly in the 1910's, and lasting until until around the mid 1930's where deaths drop back to average levels. I'm curious about that, actually.
Was US ever peaceful? As far as I know, there is always constant war. Could be wrong.
Nope, it's a constant war zone. I can't even leave the house to go to the local bartering center without my handgun because of highwaymen attacking my stagecoach. Tis truly, a wild land.

Definitely makes you fear more than ever..
Actually, officer deaths have been decreasing significantly. 117 officers died in 2014, up only 10 from 2013. The second lowest number since 1959. And if you dig into the cause of death, death by gunshot has fluctuated wildly year by year - 70 in 2007, but 48 in 2014 and only 33 in 2013. Crime has consistently decreased at an incredible rate since the 90s. Police murders are decreasing on average, not increasing - don't let the media make you think it's epidemic. It's low. [editline]1st September 2015[/editline] Plus, if you look at the statistics for 2015 so far, police gun deaths are down 13%.
don't let the media make you think it's epidemic. It's low.
If only people had the same attitude on the other side of things. What a world we'd live in.
keep in mind, they have all this protective gear that they didn't have until recently what about attempted murder against or assaults on officers?
I don't see how a nearly halved rate of police officer deaths via firearms in 8 years can be solely attributed to protective gear, especially considering that the major protective gear (kevlar, etc) has been the norm for police departments for far longer than 8 years. I can't find anything about attempted murder rates, but that would definitely be interesting to see. I'm skeptical that it would be significantly higher. If actual rates of crime are decreasing, you can't attribute that to police arrests - it means that fewer people are arrested for violent crimes, not that more are caught. Meaning that attempted murder (a violent crime) would be reflected in the US's violent crime statistics. But it isn't - we have the lowest rate of violent crime since 1960, year after year. [editline]1st September 2015[/editline]
If only people had the same attitude on the other side of things. What a world we'd live in.
I personally don't think unjustifiable police killings are increasing - I think they've been unacceptably high for a long time. I think the media shining a light on it will reduce it, which is good no matter what side of the debate you're on. Nobody wants unjustified deaths to be carried out by police officers. Unfortunately, the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, which tells the Attorney General to collect information on people killed by police, isn't enforced on a state/local level in many areas, meaning that there really isn't any government data on how many people were killed by police each year. The FBI's UCR tracks this, but it relies entirely on voluntary submission from local/state PDs, meaning that it is inherently under-reported. I would like to see some actual, quantifiable evidence about whether it is increasing or decreasing, but it doesn't exist. Because the government doesn't mandate submission of police homicides to the UCR or any alternative tracking method. Which they undeniably should.
