Popular multivitamin supplements are completely pointless for the majority of people on a healthy diet, Professor Brian Ratcliffe from Robert Gordon University, in Aberdeen argued. He added that topping up on vitamins could occasionally prove dangerous. Safe levels of vitamin A can easily be exceeded, for instance, by taking both multivitamin and fish oil supplements, Prof Ratcliffe said. Excess vitamin A, which accumulates in the liver, led to headaches and nausea, and over a long period of time increased the risk of osteoporosis. Large doses of vitamin C - taken in the belief they fight colds - may be harmless but are largely excreted and have unpleasant effects on the stomach, said the professor, an expert advisor to the Food Standards Agency. Speaking at the British Festival of Science at the University of Surrey in Guildford, he pointed out that ideal vitamin intake levels varied enormously between individuals. "I couldn't tell you what my personal biological requirement is for any vitamin. All I can do is use the population-based evidence," he said. He added that large numbers of "worried well" took vitamin supplements as part of a "belt and braces" approach to health. "They may not be thinking very much about how much they should be taking or whether they should be taking them at all," he said. "People who take multivitamin supplements are probably just wasting their money and boosting the profits of vitamin companies. With the sort of multivitamin mix that's readily available, if you're taking one of those on top of your normal vitamin intake you're unlikely to push yourself beyond safe levels. But there is a chance you could be dabbling in areas where there is a potential for harm."
I'm not particularly worried, to be honest. I take three vitamin supplements a day: Sanatogen Multivitamin tablets, Vitamin C + Zinc supplements and Fish Oil supplements. The Vitamin C + Zinc one already contains '200% RDA of Vitamin C', so taking that alone would be an overdose for a particular age group.
I take no vitamins. I get all I need from food, beverages, etc.
Well, yeah, they give you doses of vitamins and minerals EXCESSIVELY higher then your bodies ability to absorb them.
People that take any pills that they don't need are stupid. If you have a normal human diet, you don't need to have pills or anything else.
I'm proud that you guys haven't posted any unsavory memes yet :buddy:
i only take the flinstones vitamins because they taste good
Internet high five.
I take Food and drink, it works nicely.
pff Britons Also for vitamin C I much prefer clementines over anything
Wow, it took people this long to find out? The pharmaceutical business is huge - people buy stupid amounts of useless "pills" they don't need. Vitamins being the big one, people have a mentality "If i take this and get more vitamins I'll be healthy!" But that is far from the truth, to much of anything can hurt you.
real men dont take pussy ass vitamins
I don't like taking vitamins. 'Cept the Flinstones ones, THEY'RE GUMMIES! EDIT: Of course I'm joking, but seriously, vitamins are for pussies.

I used to eat the animal shaped vitamins like they were candy when I was younger
I don't understand why people feel the need to supplement their diets with stuff like that...
I have an unhealthy diet, and I intake almost no fruits / vegetables, but I eat plenty of lean meat and carbohydrates. I take vitamins, and they're probably quite beneficial for my lifestyle.
well at least it never mentioned cancer.
i get sick quite often
vitamin supplements are terrible. just eat your goddamn vegetables.

yeah it would give your liver a beating.
Exceed safe limit of vitamin A? I used to take 600,000 IU of vitamin A a day (lasted about two weeks) until I threw it up. I'm perfectly fine as far as health goes. Also, what if the vitamin C is non acidic? Would it still affect your stomach poorly? Perhaps after a shitload of it.
Vitamin C in large amounts can cause irreversible Central Nervous System damage. Yaaaaay.
Multi-vitamins are good because they supplement the body with certain vitamins that aren't necessarily in everything. However, taking supplements on top of that is just plain silly.

WHat I don't like about multivitamin tablets is how they give 100% of the GDA for a lot of vitamins. Other than that I don't care.
