“We are waiting to see what the obstruction is,” Kadeena Yerken, a spokeswoman for the Washington state Department of Transportation, said at 4 p.m. Monday. “Right now, Seattle Tunnel Partners is doing their homework and figuring out what is the best path forward.”

The machine encountered the obstruction 60 feet underground, just north of Jackson Street, in Seattle’s Pioneer Square District. According to the machine’s scale, this isn’t very deep, because the cutting-head diameter is nearly 60 feet.
While the technology provides for the machine to pull back from the cutting face if there’s a problem, and to hold back water with air pressure so people can inspect the situation, that would be difficult so close to the surface because the air pressure could blow out to the surface.
The machine was built to cut through boulders so whatever is blocking it is BIG.
One rumor is that because the area is in-fill there might be something like a pile of old cars or a tugboat that got dumped and buried.
Holy shit that thing is HUGE.
Ancient UFO

That's only the bit.

It can turn in all directions, too. It's basically a giant mechanic worm.
It is actually the world's largest tunnel boring machine:

An old boat, maybe

That's impressive, but can it pierce the heavens too?

Thats what she said!
Figures. No one in Seattle wanted the damn tunnel anyway.
edit: Why disagree it was voted down a number of times over and over again until mayor Mc bikedoushebag forced it through. I'm pissed at all the unused bike lanes too.

TPMs are FUCKING AWESOME. We should build more tunnels, just to use more TBMs. Seriously an amazing achievement of the human race.

one step closer to creating a population of mole people

You could probably add sound-proof segments where they can have a bed and kitchen

The front segment of one of the ones that was involved in the Channel Tunnel is about a 15 minute drive from me. (well, I do live right near Folkestone) It's pretty awesome.

Its a shame that the actual TBM got buried after use, it would be awesome to see the full thing (the front is impressive on its own). But alas, they are the earthing points of the channel tunnel now.
Holy shit they must have enough material to give everybody full diamond armor
i never considered it, but now i know what the inspiration was for the drill machine in season 2 of avatar
