$26 Software Is Used to Breach Key Weapons in Iraq; Iranian Backing Suspected
WASHINGTON -- Militants in Iraq have used $26 off-the-shelf software to intercept live video feeds from U.S. Predator drones, potentially providing them with information they need to evade or monitor U.S. military operations. Senior defense and intelligence officials said Iranian-backed insurgents intercepted the video feeds by taking advantage of an unprotected communications link in some of the remotely flown planes' systems. Shiite fighters in Iraq used software programs such as SkyGrabber -- available for as little as $25.95 on the Internet -- to regularly capture drone video feeds, according to a person familiar with reports on the matter.
source http://online.wsj.com/article/SB126102247889095011.html?mod=WSJ_hpp_LEFTTopStories :iia:

Drone video feeds? Is that all it says they're getting? Nothing quite like watching it watching you, huh?
shite fighters?
"Hey isn't that where we ar- Oh fuck"
Buying software to intercept unencrypted live feeds is not 'hacking'. I wonder how many of those live feeds were of drones zooming their cameras in to see naked wommins.
I bet they pirated the software anyway
Wow, you figure the US military could encrypt their damn Predator feeds.
If the U.S keeps underestimating the resistance like this, they're going to fail hard. [editline]06:52PM[/editline] Sorry, even harder.
I bet they pirated the software anyway
they can't afford it
U.S. military personnel in Iraq discovered the problem late last year... But the Pentagon assumed local adversaries wouldn't know how to exploit it, the officials said. ... Fixing the security gap ... would have added to the Predator's price.
They did it to cut costs.
"You want that Predator outfitted with $3 million in high quality optics and computer aided remote control?" "Yep" "How about the $50 basic encryption kit?" "Hell no! This is the taxpayer's money we're spending, be reasonable!"
they can't afford it
Since when do you have to pay money to pirate something?
They should pull some counter hack maneuvers and intercept the signals, then reroute the drones to it's source.
shite fighters?
Shiite. That are followers if the Shia.
[Gen. Argh, way to drop the ball.
Misleading title. They didn't hack the drones. They just overheard the data coming out of it. Even through I am really surprised US army let something like this happen, it's nothing near hacking.
They should pull some counter hack maneuvers and intercept the signals, then reroute the drones to it's source.
that could be the plan
Misleading title. They didn't hack the drones. They just overheard the data coming out of it. Because most people are too stupid to understand even the most basic explanations. (Either that, or the news channels are said stupid people)
Wow, why didn't they have that in place?
If that makes you feel that your frame of mine is fully-justified beyond any reasonable doubt, go ahead and live in a world where headlines can be used as a paradigm for interpreting an entire article.
from the article The U.S. government has known about the flaw since the U.S. campaign in Bosnia in the 1990s... Fixing the security gap would have caused delays, according to current and former military officials. It would have added to the Predator's price. Delays? Okay we need to rush this stuff in...but wait, they've had since the 90s to deal with this. It ain't about delays. That leaves price as their last excuse.
Wow, you figure the US military could encrypt their damn Predator feeds.
I will clear this up for you... Here in America we realize that we didn't encrypt the video feeds. It isn't because we want to keep them secure, it is because we were hoping they would hack into them and see that we could see them taking a piss in the bathroom... or watching TV... or doing anything during their day. And then when they realize we can see them and attack them anytime we want, they will be scared into giving up. Brilliant tactic. For the 1 person who will read this and take it as fact... It was a complete joke.
This could be used to the Army's advantage. Send the camera somewhere else the sneak up on them once you know their location.
Wow, you figure the US military could encrypt their damn Predator feeds.
They can't. The time it takes to encrypt it and decrypt it is important. If your drone is a second lagging behind on the video feed than that means you are one second behind to react to any danger. The live feed needs to be as instant as possible.
All your drones are belong to us now.

[editline]03:41PM[/editline] And I would do it...
