TRENTON, N.J. -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and the Democrat-led Legislature are returning to work to try to resolve the state's first government shutdown since 2006 and the first under Christie.
The Republican governor and the Democrat-led Legislature failed to reach an agreement on a new budget by the deadline at midnight Friday, CBS New York reports.
In a news conference Saturday morning, Christie blamed Democratic State Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto for causing the shutdown.
"If there's not a resolution to this today, everyone will be back tomorrow," Christie said, calling the shutdown "embarrassing and pointless." He also repeatedly referred to the government closure as "the speaker's shutdown."
Christie later announced that he would address the full legislature later at the statehouse on Saturday.
Prieto remained steadfast in his opposition, reiterating that he won't consider the plan as part of the budget process but would consider it once a budget is signed.
Referring to the shutdown as "Gov. Christie's Hostage Crisis Day One," Prieto said he has made compromises that led to the budget now before the Legislature.
Just have to wait a little longer and that fat blob clogging up Trenton's government will be out of power in my state for good.
i am physically sickened to think that a singular fucking hiccup is all it takes for America's RULING FUCKING PARTY to call for a shutdown of the federal government. a minor squabble and they throw a paddy and want to ruin hundreds of thousands of lives.
honestly i have mad respect for Theresa May even if i still revile her, because she at least kept trying to make a government! even if it was fucking repugnant and lead to a bollocks deal with literal terrorists, at least theresa may fucking.. you know.. tried to get a government going. this shit is like smelling a fart in the lobby and deciding to demolish the whole building as a result.
I'm for once glad ohio has line item veto and a compident not too right wing governor or we'd be having the same thing this weekend since our state legislature basically sent kasich a radioactive budget that killed medicare expansion and many state education programs as well as included some rediculous retroactive tax rewrites that would have cost the state half a billion in lost revanue and return payouts
i hope christie is an example of where we're going though where people finally drop this false dogma that democrats can't govern and republicans running shit like businesses is somehow better

This is about the state of New Jersey, not the federal government.
Governor Christie doesn't work on behalf of the Republican Party; obligations as Governor rest entirely with him, so this would be more Christie's fault rather than the 'ruling fucking party'
And it's not exactly a hiccup nor minor squabble. It's negotiations between Governor Christie and the Democrat-led legislature failing to come to an agreement for a new budget, which must be passed by the legislature (the legislature refuses to pass the Governor's budget, but I believe they passed their own budget), and signed by the Governor (who refuses to sign the legislature's budget). Hence why the legislature has been recalled from leave, to help get the situation under control.

Wish you were here.
First the bridge, now the state government. The mad man!
Maine's Paul LePage is doing the same thing right now because he's upset that the voters voted to increase taxes on the wealthy (3% for earners above 200,000) that the legislature even cut because they were worried about this. People who shut down the government because they don't get what they want have no business in office.

Yeah as much as it sucks in New Jersey, I'm super happy I don't have to suffer under the Illinois government
By the way, the only people allowed at Island Beach this weekend? That fat fuck's family:
And at least one family will be at Island Beach State Park this weekend: Christie’s, at a state-owned beach house reserved for the governor. The governor said he might join them if the Legislature gavels out of session.
Asked if that was fair, Christie said “I don’t know if it’s fair, but they’re not asking for any services.”
Happy 4th of July!
how do people accept this
Because we've never known a New Jersey governor to not act like this

Judging by his weight he's trying to shutdown his heart next.
So again, I hope this teaches everybody an important lesson in that tea party Republicans cannot run the government without fucking it up since as of right now, NJ, Illinois and Maine are now shut down because their governors (R) won't approve a budget from their legislatures.

Christie is definitely not a Tea Party politician. He's as baseline GOP sleazebag as they come. I don't think he even knows what tea is.

Sweet Tea, maybe, given his apparent gluttony.

What government, all we have is a giant bottomless pit in the middle of springfield where we put all of our money

We have an expert team on the site of the closed Island Beach State Park to help this beached whale return to the ocean!
At a Sunday news conference on the shutdown, Christie was asked if he got any sun today.
"I didn't," he said. "I didn't get any sun today."
When later told of the photo, Brian Murray, the governor's spokesman, said:
"Yes, the governor was on the beach briefly today talking to his wife and family before heading into the office. He did not get any sun. He had a baseball hat on."
Still not a terrible solution to disposing of this biological waste.

That would force people to evacuate the surrounding area in addition to the beach once the debris comes down.
