• Nerf gun causes campus lockdown; officials considering assault blaster ban
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - The University of Rhode Island was under lockdown for about 2½ hours Thursday after reports of someone with a gun on its rural South Kingstown campus, but police said an investigation found there was no gunman, weapon or danger at any time. Law enforcement officers and police dogs entered Chafee Hall and searched it room-by-room. A toy Nerf gun was found inside a backpack that belonged to a student in the class, police said, though they said they didn't know if it had any connection to the incident. Police said they are also investigating whether the incident may have been connected to an on-campus game run by a sanctioned student group called "Humans Vs. Zombies." Its website describes it as a game of tag that involves foam dart blasters - children's toys - but notes that "realistic looking weaponry" is prohibited.
Source: NECN HvZ starts next week at my college.... and this is exactly why the admins force us to refer to nerf products as "foam dart launchers" instead of guns. :v:
guns op'd nerf plz
Our school got locked down for this same reason a couple months back. Nerf guns are bright colors, real guns usually aren't -.-
Hey, if a Hello Kitty Bubble Gun can get a little girl suspended for 10 days, then all be damned if an eye-putter-outter Nerf gun can't lock down a campus for a couple hours! Think of the children god damnit!
Our school got locked down for this same reason a couple months back. I've seen pictures of a gang member in LA who put a home-made 12 Gauge zip gun inside of a super soaker body. scary shit man
was it one of these? um hate to break it to you but these are called glocks??? [editline]5th April 2013[/editline] or an ak-47, I forget which
I like how every school administration mistake is now used as an opportunity to lambast gun control in SH.
I like how every school administration mistake is now used as an opportunity to lambast gun control in SH.
Do you agree that your average college student really needs a Vulcan with a 100-round belt magazine?
I like how every school administration mistake is now used as an opportunity to lambast gun control in SH.
Which no one was doing.
Well, its fairly common in the Nerf modding scene to make more realistic looking weapons either through total body mods or even just minor changes an a paintjob.
Still, isn't that why they are supposed to have a bright orange tip? I mean I could understand if it didn't have it.
Which no one was doing.
Look at the title.
They got a feeling for the word "assault".
Look at the title.
Check your definitions, lambasting is criticism or harsh reprimanding. An offhand joke is not lambasting, scolding, or anything similar.
Jesus, how twitchy can the US get with these lockdowns? It's getting ridiculous.
Check your definitions, lambasting is criticism or harsh reprimanding. An offhand joke is not lambasting, scolding, or anything similar.
subjective
On the one hand this seems silly. On the other hand the sort of people who play humans vs zombies are the sort of people who might paint their modified blasters up to look mighty convincing, so eh
My nephew has 4 fully automatic nerf guns with the extended mags. Then semi-automatic nerf gun that holds 170 bullets. It's a war zone.
was it one of these? [editline]5th April 2013[/editline] or an ak-47, I forget which
It's clearly an AR-15 with a high-cap magazine.
Hmm, Humans vs Zombies starts at my school on Monday, I hope nothing goes wrong. It's like the fourth one, and there haven't been any problems so far, so here's hoping all goes well.
It's clearly an AR-15 with a high-cap magazine.
What are you talking about, it's a bushmaster.
Still, isn't that why they are supposed to have a bright orange tip? I mean I could understand if it didn't have it.
Plenty of people just remove them or paint over them, although they are not supposed to.
Terrorists win.
Plenty of people just remove them or paint over them, although they are not supposed to.
Most HvZ admins will ban players who do that on the spot. It's not illegal to remove the orange tip, it's just a real stupid thing to do. The key really is that your campus administration needs to know what the hell is going on. We usually have about 800 players for any given game, but haven't had any issues in years, because campus safety is aware that there are people running around with toy guns and they shouldn't freak out. The worst we get are players crowding doorways and not letting people through. We even have some players who go all-out and dress in camo and military gear: Now, the issue here is that since the authorities are unsure whether it was HvZ related, that would seem to indicate one of two things. Either the HvZ administration didn't properly communicate it to the campus and police, so that they would know in advance what's going on, or it had nothing to do with HvZ and might even have been a legitimate sighting, with the Nerf toy being a red herring.
Sucks to be in one of those schools. My school we run around with camp-painted Stryfe's and full tactical vests, no one cares.
I was there, it was interesting. Complete waste of resources though, literally had like the police department of every nearby town show up which is in addition to the campus police force. There was apparently a bomb squad too but I didn't see them. I don't attend URI though, I attend another University that's like twenty minutes away. I was just there for ROTC junk because they host my uni.
Being from Rhode Island, I heard a lot about this on Facebook from some of my friends at URI. It's laughable that it turned out to be a nerf gun.
I should check up and see what's going on with the Chicago nerf get-together, there's a group that meets up every now and again to have a MASSIVE battle in some of the parks, most of the weapons used are modified physically (high power springs, better air seals, and homemade 'stefan' darts) but it's banned to have modified paintjobs because of the risk of being mistaken for a real danger.
At least your guys' campuses allow nerf guns for HvZ games. Our campus, being in California, doesn't allow guns at all. You have to throw balled up socks at zombies.
