Scientists don’t know exactly how long ago this river would have flowed but it would likely be billions of years in the past. Several pieces of evidence attest to this hypothesis, but the key feature was a strange rock sticking out of the Martian regolith that Curiosity spotted two weeks ago. The rock (above), nicknamed Hottah, “looked like someone came to the surface of Mars with a jackhammer,” said John Grotzinger of Caltech, project scientist for the mission, during a NASA press conference on Sept. 27, adding that it wouldn’t look out of place as a slab of concrete in downtown L.A. Detailed observation of the rock showed that it was a composite, essentially a rock made of other rocks. The tiny rocks, called clasts, were embedded in the overall structure and appeared rounded, eroded after being transported by wind or water. The rocks were too large to have been moved by wind, suggesting that flowing water was the cause for their roundness. In another sandy light-colored rock that Curiosity passed, named Link (above), the rover spotted clasts that had fallen to the ground, creating a pile of stones that had been liberated from the rock. Both Hottah and Link were made of “a different type of material, one we hadn’t seen on Mars before,” said Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona during the briefing. Along with material seen at the Goulburn scar, which was uncovered when Curiosity’s lander rockets disturbed the ground, these rocks add up to a picture of an ancient stream bed that once flowed through this area. Judging from the size of the gravel that was carried, scientists estimate that water likely ran at a steady two miles per hour and came to about ankle or hip height. Above Curiosity’s landing site, orbiters have photographed an alluvial fan (below) — a fan-shaped area where debris once spread out. This is taken as evidence of a watershed that would have flowed downslope through this area. Given that there are multiple stream channels seen in the orbital photos, scientists don’t think this was just one enormous burst of water but a more sustained flow that occurred over thousands or millions of years. Curiosity’s next step is to pull out its vast array of sophisticated instruments to chemically analyze this area on Mars. The rover is currently on its way to an area named Glenelg, where it will search for further confirmation of water. Along the way, it will stop and scoop some Martian sand to run through its internal laboratory. It will look for evidence of organic carbon that might indicate the presence of ancient life.
Keep on chuggin', you big beautiful machine you.
The rock (above), nicknamed Hottah, “looked like someone came to the surface of Mars with a jackhammer,” said John Grotzinger of Caltech
NASA admits UFOs exist and are currently excavating Martian soil for reasons unknown! [editline]22nd October 2012[/editline] Maybe building pyramids?!
This is just incredibly astounding and fascinating and it's just a discovery that Curiosity landed in an ancient stream. It's such a simple thing but on mars, it's incredible! It just makes you wonder even more what mars once looked like or why it's how it is now.
And this is why NASA is still awesome, I stayed up for that landing and it was worth the wait.
This was posted last month I think. Great news regardless.

It's one thing when space makes you feel small because of the sheer scale of it, but it's another thing when you add the fact that stuff like this existed nearby not millions, but billions of years ago. It's crazy how little of a spec we are.
What if Mars is what Earth is going to be like in several thousands years? What if ancient humans that lived on Mars realized it was coming to an end and sent cloned, primitive humans to Earth so we could re-evolve?! I mean that's a load of bullshit, but it would be awesome if it was true.

For all we know a bunch of space monkeys put semen on earth which survived under water an made a rad looking bacteria fucking until it became a human thru years of evolution. [editline]22nd October 2012[/editline] and by that I mean, no, you're terribly wrong

I wish they didnt change the color of the Alluvial fan, so I can actually see it.
uh not really
Haha it just reminded me of stuff like this
you guys may mock maxofs2d, but actually he is completely right. ever wondered what's making those strange noises at night? ever wondered why mars rock formations look like they were placed by man? firstly you have to zoom in on the rock to see for yourself. here is the original image: here is the zoomed in image: still not seeing it you fucking scrubs?? wow, i can see how the illuminati has their grasp upon your mind. before you progress any further you may lack the maturity to deal with these INCREDIBLE facts, so i would reccomend you to alex jones channel, ron paul's website or infowars.com for further information. let me draw it out for you now that you've gained a higher intelligence killuminati 666 ron paul 2012. How long will it be before the rover finds that Mars is a giant spacecraft?
Kinda weird to think that maybe we got to Mars well after its prime.
I'm fascinated by this, another planet in our solar system at one point could of hosted some form of life. It makes me wonder how much we under estimated the abundance of life in the universe.
So I'm looking at these forums, do these people actually believe all this stuff?
Uh, duh.
They definitely packed up and left and we are just finding the shit they left behind. Like those stepping stones max is talking about.

Alright.
If we got men on Mars then I'd be even more impressed! [sp]yes I know he's implying we faked it[/sp]
Well didn't SpaceOne get the green light for a Manned mission to Mars in 2026? And i think it would be a one way trip too

My belief on all of this is that it was stripped of it's resources, completely getting fucked to it's abyssmal level that everything died on it. Probably what would happen to Earth if we keep going this route.
