G'day guys,
So heres the story 4 years ago I bought a $800 little trailer boat fiberglass 4.8m and loved it, worked on it, she was neglected and fixed it all up then sold it and upgraded to this bad girl, again neglected but i like something to keep me busy. I have had it a year now and love every inch of her, came with the mooring. Its been a huge learning curve I know nothing about diesel engines or owning a vessel this large but it has been fun.
The boat comes well equipped Toilet, Kitchen and 2 roomy beds with the kitchen table folding in to another. Its a Randell sports fisherman WA built.
At 9.5m Its heart is a Perkins 6354 she is a plywood boat built in 1986 the flybridge was added later 1997 its a hardtop flybridge fully trafficable with throttle and steering from either the flybridge or in-cabin. 2 x 80 litre fuel tanks and 2 x 60 litre fresh water tanks.

Before and After, Can't see much here but the exhaust system and heat exchanger have been completely overhauled. More photos HERE
The engine had its problems but I have repaired it and got it running like a clock again. Main issue was the exhaust elbow had a large crack and leaked exhaust into the engine bay and was then sucked in through the air intake I am guessing it was run like this for a few hours without the previous owner noticing. I replaced the entire exhaust run and water injection pipe, Cleaned the whole air intake system, Ran a bunch of oil changes through it to clean out the old girl. Has improved greatly in performance and speed. The boat has been subject to poor planning and patched up repairs that she just needs a lot of love to be restored to her former glory.
The whole interior is original its never been renovated so I have slowly been retrofitting the whole boat with new systems such as LED lighting newer solar panels and inverter. The list goes on I have kept a detailed captains log but don't want to bore anyone with the details, Its been a fun year, Boats have dragged me out of my gaming and inside hobbies and outside. I have picked up welding, woodworking, wiring, and also the responsibilities of being a skipper, I have been on the water now 4 years and have had my share of scary and funny moments. My family has owned alot of boats but I am the first to own a boat this size its been great. I will leave it there for any questions anyone has. Thanks for reading.
I would personally love to see a log of all the boring boat stuff. I personally restore antique watercraft, and love to see renovations and stuff. Usually we keep everything as it would be stock - never make upgrades, except for the latest project, which is a one-off Hackercraft getting a Merlin in it.
IF that motor is under your aft deck and is droning at all, you can add some popcorn mufflers to it, if you can find the space for them.
IF you have any wood-working or cabinet inboard questions let me know... those are my specialty.

Did you pull the motor to overhaul it? Or get what you could off the top and paint the thing with a brush or spraycan? Either is cool. Like I said. I want to know details.
I agree, more boring details, those are the most interesting. I'm particularly interested in this, I'd love to see interior shots and pictures all around! How much did she cost?
That wood finish is beautiful. Nah did it all in the water, Was very difficult to get around the tight bay but was fun. Filed all the rust spots off and sprayed on just a coating to prevent rust. Will have to type my log up I am planning to have it pulled out in a few months to get slipped and the prop serviced. Have you ever restored any brass fittings? I have a bell and spotlight handle they have gone completely blue haha would love to get those shining again. The engine runs pretty quiet its a wet exhaust system.
I am gonna sand back the interior this winter the whole thing has been slapped in just cheap house paint its everywhere really sloppy job and has started to peel in places that are exposed to the salt water.

Haha well I will have to give all the details from my logs when I am down there on Tuesday It cost me 28,000 for the boat and 10,000 for the mooring I recently had the mooring serviced. It has to be done every 2 years divers go down and check it all out. I recently fixed a dead spot on the steering caused by the steering arm bracket coming loose and moving instead of the rudder when ever I turned, Should have been bolted down in the first place so I put some big bolts down that to hold it in.
My mooring had not been serviced in 4 years so I didn't have much info on it but its 2 large railway sleepers sunk and chained together passed the inspection after a few D shackles got replaced. I will post more photos on my tablet now so will have to give me a while.
So, I guess these are like the RV of the boat world, right? You ever spend a weekend or two in it?
What an awesome boat, I'd love to see some more pictures of the inside too.

Pretty much, yep longest I have spent on it was 6 days. I have a bbq and microwave for cooking it doesn't have a fridge but heavily insulated ice box built-in to the kitchen it takes a bag of ice every 1 and half days. So its not to bad.

I am actually down here right now and have snapped a lot of shots for you guys. While doing so I found that my last trip broke my gear selection cables and I had no idea! Cant believe it would have been crazy if it broke while out on my last trip.
Alright just got back from a 3 day trip down there, spent the time fixing some things and added a secondary battery system with two 40watt solar panels to keep them charged.
I burnt out my 1000 watt inverter drilling through stainless steel the fan had failed and I didn't realise so I bought a 2000 watt generator for my tools and a cheap 400 watt inverter to replace my old one.
I went with lower power since I only use it for my laptop. The generator is awesome was only $200 it probably won't last long since you get what you pay for but I am confident I can keep it running its just a lawn mower motor with alternator runs all my tools and can use it to top off my batteries.

That's a great looking boat, a little bit messy, but the most important question of all:
Why do you have a half naked woman underneath a pillow?
Please come and pick me up. I wanna go fishin' with you.

It would take a me a while, and I would have to get my international license but sure.
hello nicknack.
Is that the same boat that a bloke called Steele previously owned, at the bottom of the Coombe, Mosman Pk?
I had a look and it was a great boat... of course there will always be problems you inherit with a boat - it's great that you're motivated to tackle them while customising to your needs, I can't wait 'til I find the coin to do the same.
This makes me want to get a boat to live in, it seems fun.

I highly recommend it, It works out cheaper than renting but i recommend checking your local laws they might prohibit it or have limits. Its so beautiful on the water.

I will commit my resources to this but as the first vessel i claim the title of "Admiral of Facepunch".
Since there has been interest i will give a update, Its been a huge winter. I have become a volunteer at my local sea rescue group. The skills and experiences there have improved my seamanship and skills greatly.
I have had a few funny moments, I was inside for a hour or so when I came out the back heading to work and my tinny had broke free and floated away haha. Chased it down and got it back thankfully. I am unsure how but during a detailed check of my boat mechanics I noticed that my gear select cable was broken. The bracket the cable connects to had rusted and the resistance was to much for the cable. I had to cut a hole in the floor to fix it so i put in a hatch for easier access and it allowed me to clean the gearbox and drive shafts. I will have to bring my captains log home I cant keep track of all the maintenance.

I bought a spare starter motor and alternator it was in newer condition and had a higher output. I wanted to change the belts so thought why not swap them? It was a mission and a half but got it done in a day. The sea water pump had no way to tension the belt just a sliding rail with 2 bolts so we had to hold the tension on while doing the bolts. Started the engine and by the time i walked to the back of the boat to inspect the belts the water pump belt had been completely melted through and was smoking. Take two I got the bottle jack out of my car and after some balancing got this setup, my bottle jack belt tensioner.

All back and running again new belts new alternator. I changed out all the alternator wiring to support the higher output and got a 24v to 12v battery charger so my secondary batteries will not have to rely on solar. I have installed a auto start freshwater pump, a sender for in the fuel and water tanks. Drilling a large hole in the fuel tank was scary.
