X-rays revealed that two large stones were obstructing the chick's guts. In two separate operations, vets at Wellington Hospital in New Zealand used lasers to successfully break apart the rocks. Pukaha Mount Bruce, New Zealand's North Island wildlife centre, where Manukura lives, reported that the bird's heart slowed suddenly during the surgery giving the operating team "a bit of a scare". But the little white bird pulled through and is recovering in isolation from other animals. Kiwis, like other birds, swallow stones to help them digest their food. But Manukura, it seems, swallowed more than she could stomach. Manukura, a North Island Brown Kiwi, is the 13th kiwi hatched in captivity at the centre this year. But it looks sad in the picture :c
Awwwww look at that little thing.
What she doesn't have in flight she makes up in cuteness. :3
Delicious
Hopefully a Dane doesn't show up and shoot it :v:
that has to be the most adorable xray ever
I've never known. Can a Kiwi open its mouth? Or do they rely on sugary liquids?
They eat rats.

"But it looks sad..." "D'awwww..." "What it lacks in flight it makes up for in cuteness" "delicious" Stay classy, Facepunch.
In all seriousness though, thats friggen adorable. Good that they used lasers, the blades that would be used otherwise are like, as big as it is.
I envisioned a non Māori New Zealander. Indeed a rare sight.
I envisioned a non Māori New Zealander. Indeed a rare sight.
Eh?
I envisioned a non Māori New Zealander. Indeed a rare sight.
You know, I was asked if I was from Wellington. When I asked why they thought that, they said I was white. I told them I was from Auckland. When I asked why he instantly assumed I was from Wellington, he replied with "Oh, well, isn't Auckland mostly Maori's and Pacific Islander's?" What on earth are they teaching you kids. ... He would have been right had he been talking about south auckland :v:
It got shot in the stomach with a laser. I'd be sad too if I were it.
I've never known. Can a Kiwi open its mouth? Or do they rely on sugary liquids?
They can't open them until they get old enough. Usually they still have some yolk left over after hatching though so that lasts them until they are strong enough to open their beaks.
