A "specific threat of an Islamist attack" was identified by state security sources, they said in a statement.

The parade - a well-known regional attraction - was cancelled only 90 minutes before it was due to start. "Many people arriving at the train station were already dressed up and very disappointed - but we didn't want to take any risks," police spokesman Thomas Geese was quoted as saying. Braunschweig's Carnival parade reportedly draws around 250,000 visitors each year. More than 4,000 participants in fancy dress march down a 6km (four-mile) route through the city.
**SOURCE** Aaaaaaand why do people continue to disagree that the terrorists have won? When you are willing to cancel public events on a whim without disclosing any information, citing "security reasons", you've lost. You're simply too paranoid of the what-if scenario to properly function.

Look, who gives a fuck if the turrists won? I'd rather folk weren't getting shot at, they can have their shitty wasted victory if it means no one gets shot. Discretion is the better part of valor.
You're simply too paranoid of the what-if scenario to properly function.
You want to play with the lives of 250k people, be my guest.
Secondly how well do you think it would go down if they had this information, sat on it and then the parade is attacked, people die and then suddenly it's in the news that they had this shit before hand?
As opposed to not acting on information, and endangering possibly hundreds of people?
Nothing says you're safe more than people willing to push you around and give no reason why besides "terrorists." Fuck em'. The show goes on.
Secondly how well do you think it would go down if they had this information, sat on it and then the parade is attacked, people die and then suddenly it's in the news that they had this shit before hand?
You might get a public inquirey where half of the recommendations wouldn't really do anything and they would still tell the press fuck all in the sake of national security. They don't care if people live or die or if they hate them for ruining an afternoon event. They just want to look good.
Taking an obvious precautions in the wake of two mass shooting events isn't letting the "terrorists win", it's doing a risk assessment and deciding to do the easier thing and call off a stupid parade instead of possibly providing a target for some Islamist dipshit. Now if Germany said it was going to start two, trillion dollar wars of choice for no real reason and slowly erode it's citizens civil rights in the name of fighting terrorism you may have a point about terrorists winning.
Let's just hope they're not going to cancel the soccer world cup in three years. The German population would literally revolt and start World War III.

They cancelled a parade, they didn't shit in anyone's cornflakes.
Push you around? They cancelled a parade, they didn't shit in anyone's cornflakes.
If the public feel it isn't safe, they wouldn't attend. Instead they get told by someone else who may not even have any creditable information what they can and can't do, just in case it's real.
The police said that they got insider news from an informant that is pretty close to the radical scene, and was able to provide information of when and how the attack was supposed to happen. So I guess it's a good decision to cancel it.

No seriously where's the benefit for them?

People hurt by Boston bombers? Guess they didn't read the "public feel".
Aaaaaaand why do people continue to disagree that the terrorists have won?
Because Europe/US haven't become Qur'an-enforced Islamic hellholes. If they had won they wouldn't be trying to commit acts of terror because we're "infidels".
I was there today and the entire inner city of braunschweig was full of police. They found 2 suspicious looking objects but it was a false alarm. Still, it was really scary to experience something like this. And i prepared myself for all the candy...
When you are willing to cancel public events on a whim without disclosing any information, citing "security reasons", you've lost. You're simply too paranoid of the what-if scenario to properly function.
When people spew "you're slightly inconvenienced at the airport some and bomb threats are taken seriously you let the terrorists win!!!" it looks really, really dumb. Uhh let's not act on information and let bad shit happen because hey we can pat ourselves on the back and say "well at least the terrorists LOST!"

The terrorists aren't aiming to ruin someone's carnival or make all westerner's paranoid. Bin Laden didn't set out one day to make sure all the infidels had to take off their shoes at airports. They want the west out of the middle east, and as far as they are concerned until that happens they haven't won.

The new class wants to murder all non-Wahhabis. In the world. Everywhere. We're in a war for the hearts and minds of the human race right now. I truly hope reason and justice prevail over ignorance and insanity. This is humanity's one chance to make the leap forward. If we fuck it up and tumble down, we're stuck on this rock until it becomes uninhabitable.
Because Europe/US haven't become Qur'an-enforced Islamic hellholes. I think you're missunderstanding what people mean when they say this, they're saying this because nowadays Terrorists are better off than they've ever been before because our "war on terror" the way we do it actually helps them to gain followers/power.
Jeez, it's like America's post-9/11 paranoia all over again in here, except this time in Europe instead of America, and Americans going "u let da turrists win" instead of Europeans.
Jeez, it's like America's post-9/11 paranoia all over again, except this time in Europe instead of America, and Americans going "u let da turrists win" instead of Europeans.
Yeah man cancelling a parade is really equivalent to two incredibly long wars costing trillions of dollars and killing thousands of people and incredibly invasive and dangerously powerful legislation passed to hunt terrorists at the cost of hundreds of millions people's rights.
Jeez, it's like America's post-9/11 paranoia all over again, except this time in Europe instead of America, and Americans going "u let da turrists win" instead of Europeans.
You know, a day after a terror attack struck on European soil, it would be paranoid to cancel a large ceremony with vulnerable citizens.
I'm talking about the posted reactions on Facepunch, they're reversed from before and it's amusing. Leave it to you people to start strawmanning me for things I didn't say.

Leave it to you people to start strawmanning me for things I didn't say.
How is it strawmanning when you never said that you were referring to Facepunch? You just mentioned Eurpoeans and Americans in general, not the slightest implication that you were referring to Facepunch. It seems more like you're strawmanning your own argument to make it more defensible.
I'm talking about your reactions, what else could I be referring to?
